Visited the gravesites of probably 12-15 famous Chicago mobsters today. All buried at Mount Carmel or Queen of Heaven, both off of Roosevelt Road in Hillside. Literally across the road from each other. I will post pictures and some background info on each mafia figure.
I got to Queen of Heaven, and my first order of business was finding the legendary Tony Accardo. I was kind of lost inside a huge indoor mausoleum. I walked back the other way to find an elderly gentleman leaning back in a chair. He was the only one there. He looked so peaceful himself he almost looked dead.
Can’t remember if I spoke to him first or he spoke to me first. I sheepishly told him “I’m looking for Anthony Accardo.” He looked kind of taken aback. “I know where he is, I’ll show you.”
We walked back down the to the other wing I had already perused. Sure enough, he quickly took me to Accardo. After chatting a couple of minutes with the guy (I eventually asked his name, it was Phil) I could tell that Phil ABSOLUTELY knew his shit when it came to the mob in Chicago. We must have talked a good 20 minutes or more. Could have easily chatted with him longer but I knew I had a lot of graves to knock out in a short amount of time. It was already about 4:30.
I asked him if he knew where lates 60s boss “Milwaukee Phil” was buried. He then showed me that.
I actually left, found some important graves in the cemetery and realized I had forgotten to look for Paul Ricca, long time boss and Al Capone protege. I decided to go back to the main mausoleum and look for Phil to show me Ricca. I couldn’t find Phil, only the woman sitting in the office at the entrance. Apparently Phil knows her and spend a lot of time there. She didn’t know anything about the mob, but had a good idea of what I was looking for in Ricca. She found Phil and we talked a few more minutes.
In the coming posts, I’ll share pics and insight. Highly doubt I’ll get to all of them tonight.

Long time boss Anthony (Tony) Accardo AKA “Joe Batters (a name Capone gave him after Accardo had beaten three disloyal outfit members to death with a baseball bat).” Also known as “The Big Tuna (that’s right Bill Parcells was not the original “Big Tuna.” Also sometimes called “The Boss of bosses.” It’s said Accardo never spent as much as a single night in jail, despite 60+ years in the mob, and 45 or so as boss. The Outfit thrived immensely under Accardo, who preferred to keep a low profile.
Great-grandfather of current NFL stars Nick and Joey Bosa. Also Packers wide receiver Jake Kumerow, whose father is former Oak Park/Ohio State/Miami Dolphin Eric Kumerow.

Al Capone, needs no real introduction. There were literally two men from Milan, Italy there checking out his grave when I arrived! They had their suitcases out and were headed to the airport. I’ve been to Capone’s gave probably a minimum of 10x.

Sam “Moonie, Momo” Giancana: 60s Mob boss murdered in his Oak Park Home in 1975, just before he was set to testify in front of congress on the Mob/CIA plot to assassinate Castro.
Shared a mistress with JFK, pals with Frank Sinatra. Many credit Giancana with helping to deliver the Chicago union vote for JFK. Without Chicago, Kennedy loses to Nixon.
Conspiracy theorists also link Giancana to the assassination of JFK, and some claim he had Marilyn Monroe murdered (she was rumored to be a mistress of Giancana).
Murdered in his basement while cooking sausage and peppers. It was said that due to a heart condition he didn’t eat these foods anymore. It’s likely he was preparing them for his murderer.

Giancana was semi-retired when he was murdered. It can be almost certain that the hit was ordered or approved by Tony Accardo, who was retired but anything “big” had to be run by Accardo, even in his retirement.

The headstone of Tony “The Ant” and Michael Spilotro. Murdered by the Outfit for skimming extra for themselves in the Las Vegas racket.
Joe Pesci’s character in Casino was based on Tony Spilotro. Spilotro was head Chicago guy in Vegas. Skimming casino profits for years. He and his brother were murdered in a basement in Bensenville when they believed they were headed to a ceremony for Michael to become a “Made Man.” The inspiration for the Pesci killing in Goodfellas? I’m not sure but sounds like it. The Spilotro brothers were found a couple weeks later naked (except for their underwear) and buried on top of each other in an Indiana field. Michael’s Lincoln was found at a motel by O’Hare.

Can’t remember which brother it was, but when he realized they were about to get whacked, he asked if he could say a prayer. I believe it was denied and he was shot in the head IIRC.

Dean O’Banion: north side boss, enemy of Al Capone. O’Banion’s legitimate occupation was a florist. Capone wanted O’Banion dead, but did not have the blessing of all the proper bosses. The guy who was keeping O’Banion alive died, and the day after his funeral Al Capone sent two of his henchmen into the flower shop at State and Superior (Schofield’s which served as a north side mob headquarters) and they shot O’Banion in the back of the flower shop as he was clipping chrysanthemums. His death has been depicted in films such as The Untouchables, and was mimicked in “The Town” with Ben Afleck.

Notice the fresh flowers on O’Banion’s grave. I think I saw these same type of (relatively fresh) flowers on at least 5-6 graves. Most were white; some were red. I’ll try to point them out in future pictures.
-
Earl “Hymie” Weiss. Real name was polish name that I can’t quite remember. Said to be “the only man Al Capone ever feared.” I believe he succeeded O’Banion as north side boss IIRC. Capone’s men murdered Weiss about 3 years after O’Banion at the same flower shop as Weiss and three other men exited their vehicle at the corner of State and Superior. Only one man survived the execution. It’s been said that there was a bullet hole in Holy Name Cathedral across the street. I’m not sure if that bullet hole still exists.

Quite a bit more to share, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow.
-
Forgot to add, IIRC Giancana was believed to be the lead mob figure involved in the plot to assassinate Fidel Castro. Lots of juicy juicy conspiracy theories involving Momo. Out of all the conspiracy theories, I think the one that the mob killed JFK may hold the most water.
-
Also forgot to mention that Phil, the elderly man said his brother was pretty much in with a bunch of these guys back in the day. I didn’t ask for specifics, but sounds like his brother may have been an associate with the Outfit.
I could definitely see myself going back just to hang out more with Phil to hear more stories. Lol
-
Pretty cool stuff. Thanks for sharing Tempo.
-
Also forgot to mention that some believe that the CIA killed Giancana. Seems like almost no one with connections believes this, though. Also, with Giancana being constantly under FBI surveillance, it had to be someone who knew how to get in and out of Giancana’s home undetected. No one was ever charged with his murder. This fact adds a little spice to the CIA theory, but again, almost no one who knows anything about the Outfit thinks it was the CIA. In fact, a few people claim to know who it was. Phil, the old man from Queen of Heaven told me he knew who it was but didn’t want to say lol
-
I told Phil I had read that it may have been Spilotro (Tony) that killed Giancana, but he said it wasn’t him.
-
Pretty cool stuff. Thanks for sharing Tempo.
Quite a bit more to come!

The Genna Crime Family. Led by “Bloody Angelo.”
The were Sicilian brothers who ran a bootlegging operation out of Little Italy and were allied with southsiders Torrio and Capone. North side mob boss Dean O’Banion lobbied Torrio to keep the Genna’s from operating on his turf. Torrio/Capone did nothing, and it led to the killing of O’Banion and a bloody war between north and south side.
Angelo and two of his brothers were all killed within months, separately. Three other brothers fled for Italy, but returned. Best I could tell, all 6 brothers were buried in this mausoleum. It didn’t look as if any of them lived a very long life. Pretty sure this was one of the graves that had the fresh(ish) flowers I was talking about. Yes, I can see the flower on the front step.

A little more detail on “The Terrible Gennas” from wiki:
The Genna brothers consisted of six Sicilian brothers: "Bloody" Angelo, Antonio "The Gentleman", Mike "The Devil", Peter, Sam, and Vincenzo aka "Jim".[2][better source needed] In 1919, the Gennas became involved in bootlegging; they obtained a federal licence to legally manufacture industrial alcohol, which they sold illegally.[2] The Genna brothers operated from Chicago's Little Italy, which was located west of the Chicago Loop.[2]
The Genna brothers began selling their extra alcohol at cut-rate prices outside their territory.[2] This produced a clash with the North Side Gang leader Dean O'Banion, who went to John "Johnny The Fox" Torrio and Unione Siciliana boss Mike Merlo to get the Gennas to back down.[2] Torrio refused and O'Banion and his gang began hijacking shipments of whiskey that belonged to the Genna brothers.[2] Torrio then ordered his men to murder O'Banion; they carried out the hit on November 10, 1924. Frankie Yale along with two formerly-Genna aligned gunmen—John Scalise and Albert Anselmi— entered O'Banion's flower shop and shot him multiple times. It is believed that Antonio "Tony the Scourge" Lombardo and the Unione Siciliano planned the assassination after the attack on the Gennas' bootlegging operation after O'Banion heard rumours that the "guinea dagos" were muscling in on O'Banion's joints.
-
After O'Banion's murder, Chicago erupted into gang war.[2] The North Side Gang, led by George "Bugs" Moran, shot and wounded Torrio outside his home.[2] Torrio fled to Italy, leaving Al Capone as boss. The North Side Gang took aim at the Genna brothers and on May 27, 1925, Moran chased down Angelo Genna in a high-speed car chase, then shot him to death.[2] On June 13, 1925, Mike Genna was gunned down by police after a shootout with the North Siders.[2] Antonio Genna was shot to death on July 8, 1925, in an ambush. The remaining three brothers Jim, Sam, and Pete fled Chicago.[2]

It’s hard to see/read but this is the grave of Paul Ricca (born Felice Delucia) best I can tell. He’s buried in the basement of the large building at Queen of Heaven. Ricca and Accardo were co-bosses for several decades. Both semi-retired though. Even though Accardo seems a bit more lengedary, Ricca seemed to have a bit more power when they ruled together at least. It seems Accardo “retired” when Ricca convinced him to take a demotion in favor of Ricca protege Sam Giancana. Accardo was apparently not pleased, but accepted it. The outfit was never more prosperous and powerful than it was under Ricca and Accardo.

Sam “Mad Sam” DeStefano. Hitman and loan shark for the Chicago Outfit. Brutal gangster who was said to be a legitimate psychopath. Allegedly murdered by previously mentioned Tony Spilotro because the Outfit was afraid DeStefano’s erratic behavior was a threat to the Outfit.

-
DeStefano was such a brutal and sadistic man that he gladly carried out a hit on his own brother in 1955. Some say he worshipped the devil. He was never given “made man” status because of his erratic behavior. Then was whacked before going to trial.
-
Apparently DeStefano liked his brother Mario a lot more than his brother Michael.

Sicilian born Antonio “The Scourge” Lombardo. Consigliere to Al Capone. Gunned down at the intersection of Madison and Dearborn by the north side gang in ‘28. Apparently tried to broker a peace deal with the north side but was unsuccessful. His death would soon be avenged with the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, which consolidated Capone’s power in the city. There is a fresh flower outside his front step.

Joey “Doves” Auippa. Underboss to Giancana and Felix Alderisio (Milwaukee Phil). Took control of the Outfit when Alderisio went to prison in ‘69. Auippa was the top man in Chicago when the Vegas skim was in full tilt. The character Remo Gaggi in Casino was based off of Auippa. In 1986 Auippa was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the Vegas skimming racket. Auippa served 10 years, died the next year in ‘97 at Elmhurst Memorial.
The Spilotro brothers were found buried next to a field about 5 miles from property Auippa owned in Morocco, Indiana.

-
Felix Alderisio (AKA Milwaukee Phil). Underboss to Giancana, succeeded Giancana as boss in late 60s to early 70s. Seen slightly conflicting dates on this. You name it, Milwaukee Phil was arrested for it. Arrested 36 times. Went to prison in ‘71 I believe and died in prison at Marion Illinois at only 59. Was only boss for a couple of years, and apparently was not that popular with the “rank and file.”

-
Says he died in ‘71 so I’d say the ‘67-‘69 timeline as boss looks correct. Not sure who filled the void between Alderisio and Aiuppa, perhaps Accardo, who was always the final authority on “large matters.”
-
Joseph “Hop Toad” Giunta. I’ll let wiki give the details here.
After the murder of Unione Siciliana president Pasqualino "Patsy" Lolordo, Giunta became the new president of the Siciliana in 1929. He unsuccessfully tried to organize a revolt against Al Capone's gang.[1] As a result, according to legend, Giunta and his co-conspirators (Albert Anselmi and John Scalise) were beaten and shot to death by Capone at a party.[1] Their bodies were found the next day in Hammond, Indiana.[1]

-
Interestingly, Giunta’s co-conspirators appear to be the same two guys who did the hit on O’Banion in the flower shop about 5ish? Years earlier.
-
Apparently DeStefano liked his brother Mario a lot more than his brother Michael.

Wow…just found a fascinating tidbit a minute ago. I stumbled into a “Coffee with Culotta” video on YouTube. Cullota was the #2 guy in Vegas under Spilotro. They were very tight. Cullota says in the video that Mad Sam was killed by Spilotro (already knew this) and…his brother Mario. Lol
Only the mob
-
Vincent “The Schemer” Drucci. Born Ludovico D’Ambrosio. Member and eventual boss of the North Side gang after the murders of O’Banion and Weiss. He and Bugs Moran succeeded the aforementioned. Drucci was a major player in the bloody gang wars of the 1920s. Only mob boss to be killed by a police officer I believe. From what I’ve read, it could have been an execution, as Drucci died handcuffed in the back of a squad car.

Jake Lingle. Reporter who was executed gangland style in front of dozens of people at the Illinois Central Randolph underpass. Turns out, Lingle was killed more for his mob ties than his reporting. His killing has been depicted in tv and I think movies. This was the hardest grave to find among the 15 or so I visited the other day.

Jack “Machine Gun Jack” McGurn. Born in Sicily Vicenzo Antonio Gebaldi. Apparently he had several variations of his name. McGurn was believed to be a major player/planner of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. He fell out of favor with The Outfit by making #4 on America’s Most Wanted list. Alcoholism, lost wealth and status made him a liability to The Outfit, and he was shot in the head at a bowling alley at 805 N. Milwaukee in 1936.

More on McGurn:
This notoriety caused him to be shunned by the Outfit. McGurn, who had great hand-eye coordination, subsequently attempted a career as a professional golfer. McGurn was a silent partner in Evergreen Golf Course, at 91st Street and Western Avenue, a known mob hangout where he could often be found playing, practicing, giving lessons, or drinking and playing cards in the clubhouse. Dan Lilly was known to have caddied for him once and claimed that he kept a machine gun in his golf bag at all times. FBI documents released in December 1999 revealed that singer Bing Crosby, who frequently played golf in Chicago,[4][5][6] was one of McGurn's golfing partners.[7]
On August 25, 1933, the Western Open golf championship began at Olympia Fields Country Club in the far south suburb of Olympia Fields. A reasonably skilled golfer and flashy dresser, McGurn entered the competition as Vincent Gebhardi (another version of his real name), the professional at public Evergreen Golf Course. In the opening round, McGurn carded a 13-over-par 83 on course No. 4 (today's North Course). The next morning, the name "Gebhardi" on the day's pairing sheet was observed by an alert Chicago Police chief detective, who sent two sergeants to arrest him. "Aware of McGurn's truculent temper", the Chicago Tribune account reported, "the sergeants enlisted the help of Lt. Frank McGillen and five policemen from the Homewood station of the county highway force".
McGurn was playing much better the second day. The group of burly officers accosted McGurn on the seventh green and told him he was under arrest under a warrant issued the day before under the "criminal reputation law". He was accompanied by his wife, the glitzy "Blonde Alibi" Louise Rolfe. Wearing a tight, thin white dress and sporting a three-carat diamond ring, she approached the policemen and snapped, "Whose brilliant idea was this?" McGurn politely asked to finish his round. Amused, the plainclothesmen agreed and became part of his gallery. But the police presence began to unnerve McGurn and his game suddenly went sour. He came in with a 16-over-par 86 for a 36-hole total of 169, 14 strokes above making the cut.[citation needed]

After a bit more reading on Chuckie English. It seems he may have been whacked for bad mouthing then current leadership and the way Giancana was shelved. Saw something else that said he was in retirement in Florida, came back and wanted his action back.
-
I mentioned Paul “The Waiter” Ricca earlier in the thread. An incredibly powerful successor to Capone. Accardo and Giancana get more of the glamor, but Ricca may have been the most powerful. He basically ordered Accardo into semi-retirement from what I’ve read. And there are many that think Accardo was the “best to ever do it.”
Anyway, the reason I am sharing this again is that I just noticed someone placed a quarter on his crypt. I am looking into seeing if I can find the significance of this. Perhaps it’s a “tip for the waiter,” or I have heard that some people were killed and had a coin placed into their hand. Although I’d heard it was a nickel.
