I’m running through Ebert’s final top ten list before he passed. The ones I hadn’t seen yet. Tonight it’s Vertigo. Tomorrow, COVID permitting, Aquirre, The Wrath of God.
-
Aguirre is a badass film.

A Bridge Too Far; Hadn't seen this one before. Unbelievable All Star cast. Wonder why it's not talked about in history books?

The movie or Operation Market Garden?

If I remember correctly, the movie got mixed reviews. As you note, it covers an interesting episode in the war. Great paratroopers landing scene, but I think the “parade of stars” ensemble approach distracts from the story.

“ Roger Ebert gave the film two out of four and called it "such an exercise in wretched excess, such a mindless series of routine scenes, such a boringly violent indulgence in all the blood and guts and moans they could find, that by the end we're prepared to speculate that maybe Levine went two or even three bridges too far. The movie's big and expensive and filled with stars, but it's not an epic. It's the longest B-grade war movie ever made."[27] Gene Siskel gave the film two-and-a-half out of four and wrote, "More often than not, A Bridge Too Far isn't a story; it's a parade of famous faces. As for the battle footage, it is more often tedious than glamorous. The paratroop landing provides a spectacular five minutes. Other action footage is routine."[28] Vincent Canby of The New York Times stated, "The movie is massive, shapeless, often unexpectedly moving, confusing, sad, vivid and very, very long."[29] John Pym of The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that "by the end of this extravagant film, we have a fair idea of the who-did-what logistics of a costly military operation. The root problem with A Bridge Too Far, however, is that the top-heavy complement of stars never allows for any focus of attention."

The movie also got some good critical reviews. From Wikipedia:
"However, not all reaction was negative. Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "In strictly cinematic terms, the appeal of A Bridge Too Far is easy to state: it is spectacular in the size and range of its effects, earnestly well-acted by a starry and able cast, well-paced and swift despite its length, and marked by an evident attempt to give the balanced truth of a tragic episode from history."[31] Gary Arnold of The Washington Post called it "an unusually conscientious and impressive war epic" that justified its high budget "in terms of careful period recreation, visual spectacle (the sequences depicting paratroop landings are particularly awesome), the mixture of exciting combat episodes with vivid human interest vignettes, an effort to establish a coherent, many-faceted view of a complicated and ill-fated military adventure, and a generally superior level of filmmaking intelligence and craftsmanship."
My guess is it's one of those movies that was better received by movie fans than the critics.

I just quoted the mainstream negative reviews because he was wondering why it wasn’t a bigger deal with that star studded cast. It appears that IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes have pretty lukewarm aggregate ratings for it too. I’ve never seen it so I can’t speak to it’s quality or lack thereof. Was just looking for evidence of why it wasn’t more highly regarded.

I agree that the film was not a masterpiece. What intrigued me was the event itself that I'd never heard of, particularly the scope of the air drops. I usually like to watch WWII films but when this came out my interests were elsewhere. Perhaps, because it wasn't critically acclaimed, it never seemed to get a lot of cable action in the years that followed.

Band of Brothers had an episode about Market Garden. It didn’t get into all the details, but (like everything else in that show) it was well done.
Seriously, if you have never watched it... watch it.

Aguirre is a badass film.
Thanks for the tip! Just finished watching on Pluto TV. Badass indeed! Throughout, I was recalling the book, "River of Doubt", about Teddy Roosevelt almost dying on an uncharted journey on an Amazon tributary 350 years later. There were a lot of the same speed bumps involved.
Right at the end, I sensed some DJT/Ivanka foreshadowing. Creepy....

Herzog's a trip, and probably the most beloved filmmaker among dorks. If you want to see more weird-interesting, check out his documentary Grizzly Man. And I'm a fan of the Bad Lt.: Port of Call w/ Nic Cage, but it's an acquired taste.
If you want to really trip balls and kill 90 minutes, take your favorite illicit substance and check out Even Dwarfs Started Small.

I watched it last night. In a way, the movie paralleled the military operation. Fubar and snafu came to mind.

Worst trade ever? Or a symptom? Cubs dealt 25 year old Lou Brock to the Cardinals for veteran right handed pitcher Ernie Broglio. Due to poor fit with management and coaching style, Brock may have continued to struggle with the Cubbies?

Exactly. It just depends on what news station you watch or if you’re there in person.
Otherwise you’re just believing what you’re told or fed. No way to know truthfully otherwise. That’s why the press is so important on providing factual information and telling the truth. It’s their responsibility to tell the truth and have no bias. Just facts. When you don’t know what the truth is, it’s the media’s fault for all sides losing the public’s trust.

Yeah and I’m the stupid one. The media has a responsibility to report factual news and they have failed. If a Trump supporter was to say what you just said, you call them a Nazi, racist, stupid, etc. Get the fuck outta here with your liberal progressive bullshit. The extreme left and progressives have damaged this country so much with spouting their bullshit. Now let all your buddies jump in in 3, 2, 1......

And note- no I don’t support any of the violence going on whatsoever. On either side.

I'd say somebody is about to get impeached. And anybody else notice the size of the protest? It wasn't really what I would call a large crowd, especially when you consider previous staged events at DC last year. To complicate that no additional protective measures, like those in other protests, were taken this morning.

This dude is a notorious MAGAT, many interviews with him along the way. Plenty of selfies from other key MAGATS like Baked Alaska, inside Pelosi's office.
Yet Palin is on FOX calling this a false flag ANTIFA attack. I would love to see CNN put those key MAGATs on air and say "was this a false flag, are you really ANTIFA?"

In this case it is a true landslide; not one of those "Trump landslides" where someone else really won.
But if Custard could get Rudy to post here, that would be a real coup.

Not much. It'll probably be in the paper tomorrow if you want to read about it.

So anyway, can Ted Cruz and his merry band of pathetic boot lickers hold it with the other objections? They got their grandstanding out of the way. It’s now almost 10pm, we’re one armed insurrection deep into this thanks to the Butthurt Brigade, and we’re not even past Arizona yet. We’ve heard your complaint, no need to say it 5 more times and make this whole thing take until 8am tomorrow. Just get it over with so you can go back home to your fugly wife (don’t worry, Ted is cool with people saying this).

We’ve heard your complaint, no need to say it 5 more times and make this whole thing take until 8am tomorrow. Just get it over with so you can go back home to your fugly wife (don’t worry, Ted is cool with people saying this).

So Fartface and Old 97 don't really care, and think it's kind of boring that a coup attempt on the US government caused four deaths today because a statutorily buttressed crime gang (the current Republican Party) is trying to undermine the Constitution?
Yeah, that makes sense. I didn't expect a whole lot more from either of you. I suppose ennui is the logical response, given your track records.

I hate presidential election years, always have always will. I'm much more relaxed and human when I just stick my head in the sand and don't get bombarded by fear mongering medias 24/7. Perhaps you should try it as well, I have noticed a steep decline in your mental health lately. Please go to a therapist.
Also fuck rioters, regardless of what your cause is, and fuck Trump for riling these people up

People have been giving me recommendations on series to watch in the moments when I don’t have a million things going on. They all sucked balls.
Has anyone tried to watch this abomination called “Manifest” that’s on Netflix? It’s a top 10 show yet it’s like a soap opera with worse plot lines and acting.
I did stumble onto Bosch, however, which has been pretty decent thus far.

Movies about sucking balls are pretty much the *only* movies I watch these days.

Davy & Goliath?
Amazon Prime. Billy Bob Thornton. The previous seasons were pretty good though season 3 got a bit arcane. I watched 2/3 of season 4 episode 1. I need to start over.
Also started watching Star Trek Enterprise, the UPN Star Trek prequel with Scott Bakula from 2001 - 2005.

I enjoyed Goliath through season three. Will probably save this season for when the snow flies. I also enjoy claymation.

Looks like season 4 of Goliath will take some effort, for lack of a better word. Enjoying Enterprise. The Vulcan science officer was hot.

Finally got around to watching Yellowstone. As someone who has spent time on real ranches in Montana, it is incredibly accurate in many respects. Some folks did some mighty fine research while writing it. They got a lot of little details right that only farm/ranch people would even appreciate. That doesn’t happen often.
Of course there are elements that are completely over the top, but that’s to be expected. I thought it was pretty great.

Season 7, episode 6 of GOT. Great first 5 minutes.
-
Yup
I am getting ready to start watching Game of Thrones within the next month or so, but debating on not doing it based on what I’ve heard about the shitty ending ruining the whole show. I don’t want to waste all that time to have that happen. At least with that there’s a heads up and the series is over. With Dexter I wasn’t able to know that before starting because it was in real time.
Any thoughts from anybody else on watching GOT. Is it worth my time with that ending?
-
It's not about the destination, just enjoy the ride.

Just finished GOT. Yeah, that 8th season...
I will say the series was better (for me) the second time around. So many players (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer) that I would lose track of who's who.
-
Ending was weak but I really enjoyed the series overall. I read all the books but, even so, that many characters is still a challenge. Wish GRRM would finish his job.
-
No doubt. By far the most characters to keep track of in any show I’ve seen. Definitely catch more things on a 2nd or 3rd re-watch.
-
I was about to say I bet there are at least 50 “main” characters in GoT. Just looked it up, according to Google there are 52.

Went to the movie theaters last night for the first time in 2 yrs. As we were making our way to "Power of the Dog", we passed the "Jackass" entry and the wife says, who wants to see that? My response , as I looked at what else was playing, was that I'd rather see that than 80% of the rest of the shows. After sitting thru the coming attractions, she said, you're right. That's pretty rare in my house.

watching anything I can. Had cataract surgery this AM. Getting a cataract sucks, but getting the surgery is pretty amazing. I was in and out in 90 minutes and these new artificial lenses are ridiculous, I can see perfect at distance and reading, and I never knew colors could be so bright.

When talking about Makar, Gretzky said, "The closest player we've ever seen offensively and defensively that can make an impact on the game that much is Bobby Orr."
I've seen both and Cale is better on the D. He neutralized McDavid last series. Lidstrom is in the conversation but that's it. Should be a hell of a match up against two time defending champs! Go Av's!
First game tomorrow.

Colorado is on a mission. They screwed up last year, getting knocked out early. In watching last night's game, I said to myself near the end of the 1st period, "do not give up a goal at the end the period and give them some momentum."
And the best part with 3 minutes to play was Corey Perry get checked in the back falling headfirst into the goal. Perry is such a POS, hated him when he was with Anaheim, always trying to start shit. Go Avs.

Analysis from local fish-wrap:
Understandably overshadowed Saturday night amid a seven-goal outburst of highlights in its Game 2 blowout of the Tampa Bay Lightning: Statistically, the Avalanche played its best defensive game of the season.
"In taking a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final with a 7-0 win, the Avalanche allowed 16 shots on goal, its fewest in 98 games this regular season/playoffs.
The Lightning had one shot in the first 10 minutes.
The Lightning had basically one prime scoring opportunity, a low slot deflection that was saved by Avs goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
And the Lightning was shut out for the second time this postseason and posted its lowest shot total in 101 regular season/playoff games this year. Its previous low playoff shot total was 23 … in Game 1 against the Avalanche."
Av's staring at a potentially historic run.

https://ca.movies.yahoo.com/netflix-takes-aim-liberals-snowflake-084648477.html
On Wednesday, Netflix quietly dropped Snowflake Mountain with little promotion in the lead-up to its arrival. And it only takes watching the first 30 seconds of the reality-television series to understand why.
If you hadn’t already guessed, the “snowflake” in Snowflake Mountain refers to the pejorative term largely used by the right—and often preceded by the word “liberal”—to describe someone who is overly sensitive. The eight-episode series follows a group of young adults who are purportedly “overly emotional, easily offended, and dramatic.” Their parents, whom they all still live with, send them off to the wilderness where two military veterans teach them survival skills that will somehow transfer into maturity and accountability once they return home. Later on, it’s revealed that they’re also competing in a Survivor-style competition for a $50,000 prize.

Yeah, what's he trying toto seal the victory do, ruin the ending of a Disney movie? Kadri comes back from broken thumb, surgically repaired two weeks prior, and beats the all-world goalie!

The Wilson trade was ridiculous. It was one thing to throw money at free agent Peyton Manning, another altogether to throw away picks and players on an old QB. Add in a ridiculous coach and....
At least you can go see some Buffs games...
-
Ha! Maybe the Buffs can hire Chryst. Only football worth watching around here is the Zoomies.

I’m kind of ashamed to admit this but I went down a weird YouTube rabbit hole where this guy acquires really old MRE kits and then ceremoniously opens them and eats them. It’s fascinating to me that not only have these things survived intact, but that even 100+ year old MREs/emergency rations are sometimes still edible.
There’s also another guy that does the same but with just regular (usually canned) food and drink. If it looks decent he’ll usually try it. A lot of it is really gross, as you’d expect.

Given it's October I am doing horror films all month and diving pretty deep in some places. So far, off the top of my head, I have watched:
Deadstream - fun goofy found footage film about a disgraced Youtuber that stays the night at a haunted house that ends up actually being haunted
Lake Mungo - found footage/mockumentary about the death of a teenager and ghostings
Hellraiser - new Hulu reimagining, wasn't amazing but much better than anything since Hellraiser 4
Grave Encounters 1 & 2 - more found footage, creepy as hell about an abandoned mental hospital
The Houses October Built - easily my favorite of the month so far, yet another found footage about friends traveling around trying to find the most extreme haunted houses and it gets creepy as all hell
The Houses October Built 2 - not as good as the first but still very solid and a fun twist ending
I will definitely be checking out VHS 99 when it drops on Shudder in a few days and plan to watch Terrifier 2 and see what gore Art the Clown is getting into.

Ok, I wasn’t sure your intentions of posting. I love the authenticity and slow pace of life. Times are much different now and they are exactly right about people not caring about anybody else anymore. I grew up in a small town of 500 people and growing up everybody treated each other like family and you always helped your neighbors. Never locked your doors and took people in their word. When the older generation died out, younger people have moved in and nobody knows anybody else and it’s so different. Pretty sad actually.

New season of Yellowstone coming out on the 13th. Looking forward to it although I don’t have a clue where else they can take the story.
Side note: I was about 3 years late to that show. When everyone is crazy about something I generally eschew it. Was totally wrong to have done so in this case. It is over the top in many ways, but it really hits the nail on the head in a lot of other ways.

Same. I didn't get on the bandwagon right off the bat, either. Think I bought a month of Paramount or Peacock (whichever it was on) and binge watched it over the course of the month. It is WAY over the top, but entertaining.

I binged most of the episodes after hearing how popular it was.
The cinematography and the acting are both top notch. But I found the storylines too non-sensical to really get into. You really want me to believe there are that many murders in Montana? It’s one of the safest places in the US.
And the plot armor on Beth Dutton is ridiculous. So she basically does whatever she wants and never gets in trouble for it. The scene where she trashed the ladies store that thought her SIL was shoplifting was ridiculous. She’s arguably the nastiest bitch on the show but still has arguably the most desirable male fawning over her. This seems like a soap opera meant for women.
The cinematography is my only reason to watch. If it were set in Texas I doubt I’d have interest

How did this Covid start in the 1st place ?
Could we just put a dent in the current booster supply before the new booster comes out that will , experts said, be effective vs the new strain.
"A newly updated booster is due out this fall. While it wasn't specifically designed with EG.5 in mind, it will likely offer at least some protection, experts told NBC News.
Experts said, and they quoted 1.
Those behind on their shots need to decide whether it makes sense to wait for the updated booster, or to beef up their protection now in the face of this uptick."
The redneck state of Minnesota has been telling us about this new wave and levels being up for a while now.

Three stories revolve around a man who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person, and a woman who searches for someone with a special ability.
It’s three movies in one. Just something different and intellectually stimulating but not your typical movie. There’s a much deeper meaning with the whole RMF thing and the movie. You’ll have to google a little afterwards to find the point of it and different interpretations/meanings. Very creative and interesting concept. I enjoyed it.

It was starting to get very predictable - as soon as they brought up the ACA I bet my buddy 5 bucks she says John McCain

Whatever hypnotherapy or sorcery they did to get this level of debate performance out of her is impressive. Also as Murph touched on, it seems they shifted strategy from trying to call out his lies to just having her lie and forcing him to react to those. Which was effective.

pretty simple strategy.
Tell the truth.
Touch on policy.
A few weepy anecdotes about women and blue collar people.
EVERY single time you get the mic, put in a trigger for Trump so he will spend 2 minutes hysterically distracted
Ignore what he says. No need to rebut small factual errors or gross stupidity. Stick to the script.
She was 95% perfect, at some point towards the end she insisted on going back to something about fracking.
The killer move was the question about inflation, she gave a generic answer about making people's lives better via this policy or that policy, then throwing another grenade a Trump so he parried that instead of sticking to inflation.

Billy Bob Thornton is an American treasure.
-
Billy Bob Thornton is an American treasure.
His character made an inaccurate statement about the carbon foot print of wind turbines..The chick lawyer should have rebuttaled him. That scene lacked cred.
-
These guys are in the oil business, you think they’re going to be concerned about getting all the facts right on the carbon footprint of wind turbines? I’m still on the fence on whether I believe they’re as low carbon footprint as some suggest they are. I’ve been around a lot of them and there is an enormous amount of material, energy, etc that goes into them before they even begin to start generating. Then maintenance, and questionable longevity, etc.
-
I think the scene was credible until the chick lawyer seemingly bought his spiel. She was like, oh, I didn't know that. That part lacked verisimilitude. Just a 'that's not what I'm, reading, agree to disagree, could've worked. Maybe.
I expect the land man to believe his own spin, but not her.
-
I took the scene a different way. I thought it was meant to foreshadow the fallibility of her knowledge and technique, in contrast to her being an enormously cocky know-it-all asshole on the surface. It also outlined the initial power dynamic between the two.
-
Here is a decent response:
As someone who admires strong female characters with powerful voices, I think it would have been wonderful if Rebecca had responded with informed counterpoints, because the facts are easy to find. In her silence, she allows Norris’ words to ring as truth, especially to uninformed viewers who may not know the political agendas of the writers, or the producers.

-
Here is a decent response:
https://poweralliance.org/2024/11/26/landman-misses-the-facts-on-texas-wind-energy/
Right, I get all that. The people who are really bought into renewable energy wanted to hear a rebuttal. But that scene wasn’t written to give her a rebuttal, it was written to serve the show, and the interpersonal dynamics, and to foreshadow what’s to come.
Also, if you aren’t aware, a central theme in Taylor Sheridan’s shows (that take place in rural America) is demonstrating how women fit into traditionally male-dominated landscapes. If you’ve seen his other shows you’ll know that coastal, highly educated elite types that come, guns blazing, into rural America typically doesn’t go well.
It’s not written just a defense of the way of life, it’s also a de facto criticism of it; and to further that thought, it’s ultimately a microcosm of the cultural divide that has led to the rise of MAGA in contemporary politics.
Do a quick review of the female protagonists in Taylor Sheridan penned series versus the antagonists and you’ll quickly see a pattern.
Sheridan easily could have written in a rebuttal that would have satisfied the people watching who actively hate Big Oil, but it would have completely defeated the purpose of everything that has followed. Maybe in future seasons she’ll be offered the rebuttal you and others seek—there has been foreshadowing to that end.
-
I personally was not looking for a rebuttal. Maybe I should look at the scene again, buuuut. My impression of her response was 'oh really? I didn't know that.' like she was some clueless urbanite who just got schooled. Something like, 'oh yeah, that's not what I'm reading' would have been enough.
Just enough to raise the possibility that there is another side to the story.
The people I talk with around here are pissed off about wind and solar farms. They pretty much all think it takes more energy to build them than we get back. Also, that wind turbines kill zillions of birds. Wonder where they heard that?

Massively dramatized like all shows, I mean there’s no way some guy like BBT is actually doing that job. I actually talked to a guy who was in oil and gas (was headed to Herscher IL actually this week to do work on the underground storage there) so I asked him if he watched it. He said he loved the show but it wasn’t remotely accurate and that’s not even what a Landman does.
