What I recall this year is they started out switching, not pressuring and trapping. But I am old and the years blend together /s
This year's team actually started out with the depth to press a lot more. Then Goode broke his foot, Melendez hurt his shoulder, and Clark left the team.
Next year's team might have the talent and depth to extend the defense more, depending on who returns and who else they add.
I'd rather see multiple team defenses. That is really what we saw this year. Switching, under the ball screen, drop coverage, pressure. Just no zone.

Davonte Davis would be the one I am worried about, 6'-4" athletic wing guard, been in big games before and performed well. Just the type of player that could kill us for 20+.

I haven't read up much on Davis. Iirc, he averages a little over 10 ppg, and shoots ok from 3 (about 34%).

Also, during the Pitt-Miss. St. game, MSU was having trouble with Pitt's screen and rolls. Avery Johnson commented that MSU was having trouble executing its switching defense. Of course, Nichi told us that a switching defense doesn't require any additional effort.

Hogs are a team I root for since my Grandfather attended the school and I like Muss as a coach (Watched him do great here at Nevada) and they are extremely talented but young. Even more talented than we are and probably younger (haven't looked)
Seen them a few times this year and they completely dismantled UK at Rupp, was fun to watch to say the least.
I don't think we have much chance here on paper, HOWEVER Arkansas is not a great shooting team and are inconsistent, if they have an off night and we are on, obviously we should win. We really need to bring the defensive intensity we saw at times this year for a whole 40 minutes

When was the last time that happened? I feel like there was some fight during the game against the floating scUM pool, but even then there were letdowns. Rutgers in the second half, perhaps.

Mayer was a roller coaster. He was often our best player when had a good night. Then there were days like today when he did more harm than good.
Would Nance have been any better? I don't think so. Grandison? Definitely not. Liked the good games he gave us, just glad Mayer is done.
Right now, I don't know what better options we had. A healthy Goode and Melendez would have been nice. Would Podz have better than Mayer? Rodgers improved, but still can't shoot.
Without Mayer, and with no other roster changes, we might not have made the tournament. We probably needed him this season. I am still glad he is done.

At one point during the game, the guy Nichi likes -- primarily because he was a 5-star recruit, and Nichi is one of the many who are too dumb to look beyond that -- threw a pass right to Illinois in transition. Then he tried to drive the lane and was rejected.
Not long after that, he threw a pass that would have gone out of bounds, but his teammates -- likely used to his poor passing, despite what dimwit Nichi believes -- anticipated this and bailed him out.
Again, pretty much whatever Nichi concludes about the game is wrong.
