Title: Karen's 2023 Cub Thread
Post by: ThePAMan on December 10, 2022, 09:43:50 AM
Post all your Cub thoughts here for Karen. Willson Contreras is gone!  I personally find Cody Bellinger underwhelming at this point.

Cubs have spent $34 5 mil so far and haven't gained a win yet cause they let Contreras walk.

Hoyer seems in over his head and when someone coins the term "intelligent spending" it tells me they aren't nearly as smart as they think.

Cubs still need a SS, catcher, DH, 2 starting pitchers and a couple vet relievers.  Since "intelligent spending" seems to means no deal surpassing 5 years, Hoyer's probably unlikely to sign Swanson, who would be a pretty underwhelming signing given the Cubs market.

With $50 million left before they reach the luxury tax, I can see Hoyer signing Senga for 5 years, adding a defense oriented catcher, resigning Smyly or signing Cory Kluber and signing  a veteran reliever.  Basically get ready for Madrigal at 2B and Hoerner at SS.

Lastly, if Hoyer signs Correa, I take back all the negative comments above. Lol

Not sure where you get 2 starting pitchers. They signed Taillon, unless that was another Judge-like report that ended up being false.

Contreras wasn't coming back. Also, there were a lot of rumors that his defense dropped off to the point where fewer teams were interested in pursuing him.

Also, it'll probably be at least another year before they offer any more ridiculous long-term deals. They're still paying Heyward next season.

It's a one-year deal. I'm OK with rolling the dice on this one.

Currently, they have Stroman, Taillon and Steele.  It seems they want Wesneski and Sampson as the #6 & #7 guys and aren't relying on Kyle Hendricks.   Can see them signing someone like Senga for 4-5 years and giving a 1-2 year deal to Smyly or Kluber.

If he stays healthy and produces like he did early in his career it’ll be a steal.

I totally understand letting Contreras walk. He’s 30, marginal defensively, and would have cost good money they can spend elsewhere. Good offense/marginal defense isn’t the way most teams are going these days. The fastest way for the Cubs to contend next year is to get better defensively.

The fact that he wasn’t traded last year speaks volumes about how much other teams “wanted” him. I’m personally shocked he got the deal he got and with St. Louis, which runs a tight ship.

Cubs had a deal with Houston that Dusty squashed at the last minute.

Contreras projects as a 3 WAR player and the Cards are a really good organization.  Hoyer f'd up on not dealing Contretas.

Bellinger hasn't been the same since winning the MVP 3 years ago and then hurting his arm/shoulder in 2020. All he does at the plate is swing out his ass to hit HRs, which for the most part ends up being a K or weakly hit out. He won't hit the other way to just get a hit. If he does hit one the other way is because he got fooled and barely got wood on the ball. Defensively, he is very good and can run like the wind. Do the Cubs have a hitting coach that will work on him and straighten him out?? Right now he's a .215 hitter with an occasional HR and bad with runners in scoring position. And being with the Dodgers he was getting to hit with runners on base.

I wish there was a like option on here. I agree with what most of you guys are.

I think they need to build the community backup for the cubs. In looking at total rankings all the top teams have huge numbers of home game wins. Then that number drops as you go down the list. The cubs need someone to be excited about. And since they are pretty much working with an open checkbook this year they should work on getting a top pitcher again. Like Prior😁. Hey maybe they should steal him back as a coach. Would have been awesome to land Kodai and coached by Prior.

They need something to get fans excited. That's one of the reasons I think Atlanta has constantly stayed a top team. People there love their team. It's same with the Heat in Miami. Chicago is hard because it has 2 teams and White Sox have recently faired better. Fans get players excited.

Yeah, Cubs vs Cardinals is always my fav game of the season. One day Cubs will get back over them.

Pretty sure they signed him at $17 mil a yr where Kodai signed elsewhere at $15. So they must not be wanting to spend much more for pitchers this yr. 🤞 They picked the right one.

Lol Mets will end up with 3 of the top 10 pitchers.
Would be nice to make all that money and not have to carry the team. That's crazy if Kodai is as good as people think.

Maybe Karen can be the ball gal like Marla Collins back in the day and the community will then be excited about going to the ballpark again.

Cubs are trucking along signing more people.

We now have a catcher, Barnhart pending a physical.

I think this could be a big year for the Cubs

If we can just get a pitcher!

Cubs need a #1 starter and a star hitter.

Can't see them pulling a trade for either and no stars are left in free agency.

I'd like to see them sign Devers next year but they'll likely be outbid.  Otani would be great, as well, but he's probably Dodgers bound.

Great day for the GOP at Wrigley yesterday. Cubs fall behind 7-0 in 2nd, take lead in 3rd. Win a 14-9 thriller. Reported that Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz were overheard singing Go Cubs Go in the halls of Congress today. GOP will be licking their wounds today, though as it appears the Cubs are about to go down 5-1.

Seems this blackout thing really just started. MLB games are very limited on any platform. There is a set schedule (on paid platforms) on games that will be aired.

I posted over in the Cardinals thread but should have posted here.

Cubs better win every game against St. Louis. St. Louis stats are crap this year. Cub better figure out a strategy going forward if they have a long game rather than burning through the whole pen.

Nico can't carry the team alone. Standford always gets such good baseball athletes.

I keep saying it, bring Prior in to be a pitching coach. Players and fans would love it.

Gonna finish up panther game my friend is obsessing over.
