Reminds me of the time many years ago I called in from the land line in the entryway to the house (cell service wasn’t great) and sat there on the landing on hold waiting to gripe about something Bernstein had said about the Illini basketball team.
It was at the same time Dick Vitale had his vocal cord polyp surgery and coincidentally I had been fighting a sore throat all week and my voice was really scratchy. Matt Abbatacola was screening the call-ins and when he asked my name I squeaked out, “Dick Vitale’s Vocal Cord Polyps” and there was a heavy sigh on the other end of the line right before he hung up on me.

They had him do some bits and segments and he was great, not really sure why he never had his own spot. Probably too many egos and proven ratings to contend with in that time frame. I feel like he had the capacity to be even more of a condescending prick that Bernstein though, and that’s saying something. But he didn’t have the chops at that point in his career to back it up so maybe that’s why he never got the opportunity. They always called him Matty and that’s what people call me and we are both arrogant asses so maybe that’s why I felt a kinship.
