The other sites do too much nuthugging of players and staff,  and are overmoderated.

Sorry, but I can't let this go, because I'm a small petty man. Marty Simmons transferred to Evansvillle after Knight ran him off not Indiana St. That was another guy some of you may have heard of from French Lick. Also just to go on Simmons played for Ron Feller at L'ville who was actually even crazier than Knight if you can believe it.

You clearly haven’t watched the last couple of games. Just because he hasn’t thrown 40x for 300+ yards doesn’t mean he hasn’t been throwing it well. He’s been pretty darn good throwing it lately. And no interceptions in 4 of the last 6 games.

I got an offer in the mail to try a cable company who I already have internet through which was considerably cheaper overall than YouTubeTV which I’d been using for several years. Seemed very comparable. But the user interface blows and I’m missing ESPNU which caused me to miss this game and I think the UCLA game is on that as well. I’m going to send this shit back and get YTTV again. It’s superior in every way.

Just watched the highlights on YouTube. Nothing really stood out in the limited amount of plays I saw other than sloppy ball handling and Mayer looked like he had concrete shoes on with bad body language and was busy throwing a fit after a missed basket while the EIU transition offense ran right past him. No longer doubting the reports of he and Underwood having disagreements about what “Everyday Guys” means. Dainja had himself a game after a slow start. Need RJ to wake up.

It looks like we have a lot of good pieces, but first time under the bright lights was a struggle for the yutes.

Watching the Illini fanbase turn on Mayer is going to be hilarious.  All you had to do is look at his stats at Baylor and realize a 6'9 guy that shoots under 40% from the FG is a negative on the court.

Welcome. I am sure you will get used to the guy who complains about people obsessing about him obsessing about someone else's Justin Fields thoughts in a basketball game thread.

I drew an analogy between your “but we weren’t perfect in a 30 point win in the first game of the year with a brand new team” and your “but how can he be playing well if he didn’t even throw for 300 yards” take. They’re both stupid. And when you said “he can’t throw…yet” it highlighted the fact you haven’t watched him the past few weeks. He’s thrown the ball very well. You deserved to be hammered for your lousy “Mitch Fields” takes. There were national analysts on the airwaves Monday saying he’s poised to be the NFLs next superstar.

Out of the freshmen I like Sincere Harris the best he's long super quick and a tenacious defender.  Hit a 3 as well.  The missed dunk was pretty funny and I'm sure that will be a hoot at the film session

Clark looked a bit nervous and didn't show much to me, his defense was bad and a lot of stupid passing turnovers and ball control issues

Epps looks like he can ball, like one of those stocky short good handling guards that Purdue always seems to have

Rodgers looks like one of those tweener forwards that can cause a lot of problems for other teams, he just needs to adjust to the game speed and practice his free throws as he's going to get a lot of opportunities from there

Dainja definitely showed some things in the second half.  Hard to tell with big men going against inferior competition but he grabbed many more rebounds than I thought he had.

Overall a very very promising looking class after just one game against a pretty crap opponent

My question.  Is Justin Fields going to be discussed in every basketball game thread? This will be helpful info as to whether I bother participating.

I do agree in that there isn't a whole lot to be taken from early November basketball.  I honestly rarely watch it.

No, just the ones where PAMan acts like the “but he can’t throw from the pocket” or the “what about the defense?” caller to AM radio shows the day after Justin Fields does something no other quarterback has ever done.

“We won by 30 on opening night with a brand new team? bUt wHAt ABouT tHe FrEE tHrOw sHOoTiNg? That’ll cost them in March…”

I’ll try to make this my last JF comment in this thread, but it’s only crazier when PAMan is doubling down on his Fields takes when the last couple game threads here have been overflowing with Fields excitement. “But he didn’t even throw for 300 yards against Dallas in a 20 point loss?!”

If someone isn’t excited about Justin Fields after the last 5 games, just go be a Packers fan already.

S. Harris             0-2

This is not the Low Thinker/High Thinker bit from HQ OG, but Short Term versus Long Term. I'm thinking Super Bowl/Final Four and you are thinking of Danny Parkins' next broadcast.

After the first 2 games, all these guys are confirming what I saw on their HS tapes.

Harris can be developed.  His athleticism, arm length I think will make him a quality player that could play in the NBA.

Sky Clark is Mark Smith 2.0.  Looks smooth but isnt very athletic. He’s just a guy.

Epps I thought was more athletic on his tapes than what he’s shown.  He too looks like just a guy.

Rodgers imo is like a Draymond Green.  Put Green on a great team like the Warriors, and he’s a difference maker. But if you put him on a bad team, he’s not gonna really matter. I think Rodgers needs great players around him to then be able to play his own junkyard dog role. But on a average to IMO bad team like Illinois I don’t see him standing out.

Mayer stinks.  His stats at Baylor and age should have told everyone that.

Dainja will struggle vs taller players bc he has no lift.  Maybe he can be Shaun Pruitt at best.

Hawkins/Shannon look very good.

Overall team wise this roster reminds me of some mediocre Maryland or Cincinnati teams. Where there were plenty of tall rangy athletic wings but not much shooting.  Feels like to me some of the pieces are redundant.  Gonna be a bubble or below year.  They really should attempt to mimic Syracuse and Syracuse zone. That’s the style they should play.  If they play up tempo vs good teams and man-man defense they’ll be really bad

Roster construction has zero to do with free shot shooting. Either you make them, or you don't. Not making them at a good percentage is problematic.

Hard to take away much from from a first game against an overmatched opponent.

EIU has a few good kids.

Harris looks like a pleasant surprise.

Clark is skilled, was a little to aggressive at times.

Epps was a a little tentative.

Rodgers had 5 assists and 8 rebounds ...

Dainja looked a little overweight. He has good hands and some ball skills.

Mayer reportedly has been having back problems. Looked stiff and frustrated. He has some length and handles.

RJ shot poorly and looked tentative.

Serven might play some.

Lieb is tall.

Hopefully Hawkins keeps it up. Unless Rodgers develops a shot, he and Shannon are our best players.

Shannon best player by large margin. He looks like a guy that athletically could get a look in NBA.

I think we can legitimately play 9 guys, but getting them on same page will take time.

After watching replays of the first two forays, something tells me this might be more accurate than I’d like to admit. This team is going to rely on a lot of untested players who almost all need to perform to their projections for us to be what we thought we could be. Missing Goode hurts more than we realize. Hawkins isn’t going to make 5 25 footers every game at the end of the shot clock, that’s for goddamned sure.

"Dainja will struggle vs taller players bc he has no lift.  Maybe he can be Shaun Pruitt at best."

Dainja and Pruitt are both 6-9 big men with limited hops. End of similarity.

Pruitt had a 7-1 wingspan, Dainja 7-7. Dainja has much better hands. He has handles, passing skills, a face up shot, and can run the court. His issues are watching his weight and conditioning.

"Sky Clark is Mark Smith 2.0.  Looks smooth but isnt very athletic. He’s just a guy."

Must be watching someone else. Mark Smith was smooth? The late Mark Smith was smooth.  !!!!!!

"Mayer stinks.  His stats at Baylor and age should have told everyone that."

He is apparently playing through back problems.

"... Rodgers needs great players around him to then be able to play his own junkyard dog role."

8 rebounds, 5 assists.

I didn’t say I agreed with all of it. I have some concerns and definitely think there will be some frustrating growing pains. My main hope is that they play well enough to get a decent seed in the tourney because I think they’ll really be rounding into form by then and don’t want to see them get stuck with a 9 seed on the West coast or something. B1G is down again this year so🤞

One thing is not happening. They are not jacking up desperation threes late in the shot clock. The threes are coming fast as part of offense, and often in transition. If anything they were rushing shots. They missed a lot of lay ups.

Everyone in the current top 9, even the bigs, can handle ball in transition.

If we are shooting 30% from three and 50% from line after 5 games, we can start to worry. Will need to assess who is taking the threes, and are they good looks. I am sure they track contested threes, etc.

Free throws are easily correctable.

Not really a match, since they were different guys.

The missed threes were mostly one guy, RJ, missing wide open looks within the offense.

The missed free throws were largely Rodgers going 1-6.  He  has poor form, needs work.

Mayer looked frustrated as hell. Throwing up arms like he got fouled on every shot. Come on man. He did have some really good takes to the rim but just left it short. It was like that for the rest of the guys really. Maybe it was first-game-that-actually-counts jitters.

It’s going to take some time for the mix of vets and frosh to gel. The talent and athleticism are most definitely there though.

I stand corrected it was Ron Felling not Ron Feller. I'll never believe another goddamn thing Justin Fields tells me.

I'm liking the cut of your jib.

I still have a medal I got for being the best free shot shooter on my 8th grade basketball team back in the mid 90s. 92%. I grew up on a farm and was only 5’ 9” and white af. I can still stand there and stripe them 15-20 in a row. No excuses.

PAMan wants you in the starting rotation.

At least on the floor at the end of the game when we know the opponent is going to foul.

You should be concerned with FT shooting regardless of the time of year. It has fucked the Illini come March.

This is more than “asking a question.” This is “concern” on Nov. 7th.

FT shooting going to be an issue?

The original post on the subject that Tempo conveniently ignored in resurrecting this thread.

Evidence that Mn still has his faculties, Tempo.

Yes, I wouldn’t be concerned with FT shooting and team defense in 30 point blowouts. Especially in early November.

Definitely not one of your better takes.

Right, the “question” then quickly turned to outright “concern” a post or two later.
