Can we be sure that's really you? I mean how many usernames have you had? I can't even keep you and "the others" straight. Never tried to as I've never put a lot of stock into you and your many aliases or clones say.

I need PAMan to tell me whose who and what their shtick is, I've never paid much attention. He seems to be dialed in on all that.

PAMan, is this the guy that likes 14 year old girls?

I like helping teen girls with their tennis careers.

And I was on the old HQ board, told everyone that Amanda Anisimova would be great when she was 15.  She’s now 21 and has a $100 million dollar deal with Nike.

I don’t think I’ve ever been wrong about anything Illini related.  Still think Underwood is going to be more like Frank Martin at South Carolina.  Lot of gullible Illini fans think he’s great.  He’s not.  Kofi was great.

I just woke up from a dream, dare I say a nightmare: I was at an Illini tailgate after the 2d home game of the upcoming  season and the Illini had lost, again, and were now 0-2 on the season. I was ranting and raving after the game as I can do here.

Flash forward to the postgame tailgate for third home game of the season, where the Illini lost again, and were now o'fer on the season. I was not ranting and raving. People who had been near the tailgate from the preceding game, including a guy wearing a Philly Eagles jersey, commented that I was not ranting and raving as I was after game 2. A neighbor friend, who would not be at an Illini game, long tossed me a Budweiser (which did NOT blow up in my face - and it has been a long time since I consumed a Buderiser). I had become resigned to the fact that Illini football had sucked again.

Maybe DoctorintheFlat can decipher this dream.

Of course I can. It comes from years of being an Illini fan (which has made you insecure, and believe that you don’t deserve nice things). Tack on the Mitchell Trubisky post traumatic stress disorder and that means serious insecurity issues which will require extensive counseling.

Also, deep down, you’re a Cub fan, and a Bud Man.

Disconcerting to see Coach Prime throw a team together and be competent versus what we have seen this year from Bielema. But hey, at least the Illini were able to substitute players last night without getting Too Many Men penalties or having to call timeouts. That was an improvement over week 1.

Unlike Tempo, Fox doesn't need a few more games to realize Bielema's squad sucks this year and they moved the pregame show next week from Champaign to Boulder. Hilarious

People should be pissed that Deon Sanders can bring a competent team into Boulder while Bielema can't field a team that can block or tackle in year 3.

So they weren't Lovie's recruits?

By and large. But i just love how you have a million micro-narratives that ALWAYS perfectly support your larger narrative. You’ve literally got an out for every situation. EG:

Poles didn’t start tanking until he realized his quarterback was awful. He was so awful he tanked a season but didn’t bother replacing him or adding anyone significant to the quarterback room. Why?

Bryce Young: too short. CJ Stroud: Ohio State doesn’t produce good NFL quarterbacks. Anthony Richardson: sucks. Will Levis: sucks.

Derek Carr: sucks. Jimmy G: something about an injury and his contract. Also, he sucks. Baker Mayfield: he sucks.

You’ve literally said all of this. Again, the notion that a GM would tank a season because he thinks his quarterback sucks, and then turn around and do absolutely NOTHING to bring in competition or a replacement is theater of the absurd type shit. And all of your little micro-narratives serve your argument perfectly.

There is no way a GM isn’t adding to the QB room (even if just a retread starter) if he was so dissatisfied with his QB that he decided to tank an entire season.
Title: Re: The Greatness of Bret Bielema

That would be in effect choosing to tank two seasons. No GM is doing that on purpose.

Yes, he needs to do more. But do you expect him to rebuild an entire roster to Super Bowl caliber in one season? He’s only months removed from being in salary cap hell.

Quote
Your leader may be the reason you have a culture problem.

It’s only one game in the college football season, but the University of Colorado Boulder football team had a losing record of 1-11 last season and today they just upset the #17 ranked TCU team that was 12-0 last year in the regular season and they were the national championship contenders to kick off the year with a bang💥

How do you turn a losing culture into a winning one? START WITH THE LEADER!

Deion Sanders AKA "Coach Prime" was hired this winter and is only a few months into the job as head coach but his influence and presence has immediately turned the program around.

What did he do? — 5 observations

1 - Set the vision for the team. Where there is no vision people will fail.

2 - Built a core leadership team by surrounding himself with successful coaches and identifying players who model the right values & behaviors.

3- Instilled confidence in the team collectively and individually by creating visual monikers, slogans, and giving personal time attention to players.

4 - Identified opportunities to strengthen each player and position on the roster to improve the overall team. Practice makes permanent.

5 - Inspired, motivated, and hyped his team through his words in presentations and speeches. He made it all about them: He believed in them, he corrected them and he praised them.

The guy has had a lot of success in the conference and turned us around in two seasons. We lost a ton of NFL caliber talent such as our QB, RB, and entire defensive backfield. This was going to be a down year no matter what and I was hoping for 6-6 going into the season.

A program like Illinois in its third season under a new coach just can’t lose a bunch of pros at critical positions and keep on like nothing happened.

Along with the shockingly poor O line play, the lack of discipline and mental mistakes are the most concerning thing. I would have thought by year three maybe more of his own recruits would be making an impact or at least playing. But still, saying he sucks is pure meatball nonsense.

He sucked ass at Arkansas.  He's won 3 games since November last year. He lost to Purdue, twice,  MSU, and Nebraska, three currently crap programs, in that time. He's beaten NU, Toledo, and Florida Atlantic. Not murderers' row.

Your last paragraph is what is most concerning. This is year 3. What the fuck has he been doing besides coaching up Lovie's guys? Where are his guys? Who redshirts guys anymore with the portal? Why didn't he use the portal to bring in linemen? Where is the discipline? This is Lovie Bad without Lovie's Kids as Coaches to blame. Is he going to talk to Lunney again? Lunney is going up tempo against the wind instead of ball control after the D was on the field forever? Why is he letting him do that? This has been a dumpster fire since last November.

He's lucky Eberlose has been terrible during that same timeframe.

They are clearly “rebuilding” after the teardown.

The Bears are 5 games into the rebuild. Why are they not Super Bowl contenders yet?!

It still looks like the Bear are in teardown mode.

The first 8 games of last season count the same as the last 5.

They went uptempo because the line can’t generate the push to actually run a ball control offense. The times we’ve actually moved the ball well this season were often when we went uptempo.

Redshirting still has value, the portal changes things but lots of other programs are after the same kids and there are plenty of other drawbacks to relying too heavily on the portal. Everyone is still figuring out how to build program continuity in this era, and I’m actually ok with developing preps and having a culture of continuity rather than trying to reload every year in the portal.

The first 8 games count the same as the last 5? Hmm. The problem is that the trend is not a good one and, as you noted,  lot of (Lovie's) guys from last year are gone.

The problem with up tempo is that it was not working. They got clobbered on TOP. The defense was out there way too much. Plus, generally, if the wind is an issue, you want to keep the ball as much as possible when the wind is in your face. You cannot go 3.and out with 3 incomplete passes against the wind.

Walter's Purdue Portals kicked Bielema ass last week. Purdue is lousy. Which means Illinois is even worse.

At the start, as it is Illinois and they usually suck after a 6+ win season,  I thought a 6 win season this year would mean he did a good coaching job. What we are seeing, and getting whipped by Purdue and Nebraska (the score should have been far worse), is extremely disturbing viz a viz the coaching staff and the development they are purportedly doing.

Your culture comment reminds me of when Belichick talked to Flus after the Bear Patriot game mast year....

I don’t think finishing weak last year really has anything to do with this year, given the roster and staff turnover.

This team can’t run the ball. Not sure what to tell you. The failure to put a competitive offensive line and a good running back on the field is a lot more concerning to me than the play calling with the bad players.

I actually had the flus culture thing go through my head when I was typing that, but it’s apples to oranges. There’s really no excuse to be this hapless on the field, but I don’t think he’s going anywhere, so he and Whitman better figure out a game plan going forward.
