Custard's comments made me think of this. I don't travel much anymore, so this might date me. When I did, there were a handful of places that I enjoyed being there. They may have changed quite a bit. I like a little wilderness with some laid back upscale amenities.

All those places are still fresh but Lake Geneva is becoming a caricature of itself. Most of the shops and eateries are run by Chicago area runaways doing their best to turn it into Chicago-lite. Gatlinburg is the same but at least you can get out to the edges and still see the good stuff.

I've been to 2 of the places you listed, Estes Park and Gatlinburg. Greatly enjoyed the beauty of both of those places. I get to spend quite a bit of time in Colorado Springs with my mom and sister living there. Garden of the Gods is a great place in CS. Cripple Creek and Victor are local spots that are interesting with their history and old buildings. In general, almost all of Colorado is must see. I enjoy the Gunnison-Cripple Creek area with Colorado's largest lake and the Gunnison River for fishing. Plus go to Ouray and the Durango area. Love Jackson Hole area of Wyoming. Next place to visit is Montana, never been there but my nephew and his family live in Bozeman. A trip there has to be made soon. Anyone that has not seen the Grand Canyon needs to go and be amazed by the spectacular beauty and wonderful history.

The restaurants in Lake Geneva are horrible
No clue why... have many friends who's parents have lake houses and just ugh bad food every time we would go out
Gunnison wasn't much of a town when I would go to crested butte to snowboard on spring break decades ago, glad to hear it's nicer now

Lake Geneva would be great if they strictly limited how many rich Chicagoans could show up.

This happens to every single area that's vacation-y nice and keeps building to accommodate because the market pushes it; eventually you get a run-up of people moving permanently, etc. None of the solutions are palatable because people want to simultaneously believe in principles that are in conflict.

Europe. The two best vacations I’ve ever taken were two trips alone to Europe. The week I spent in Paris was probably the best week of my life. Love, Ireland too.

Places like Aspen and Telluride are still somewhat quaint and spectacular. They're hard to get to and very pricey which helps tamp down the numbers.
If you've never landed at Jackson Hole airport, it's worth doing. I'd been to Teton/Yellowstone numerous times driving but was completely blown away by the absolute grandeur the first time I flew there. Hint, figure out which direction your plane will be landing and get a window on the west side.

Spot on accurate. Regional income inequality is going to continue to cause some real headaches. COVID hit and people in the South Bay figured out that for 1/8th the cost of a Palo Alto home, they could get one in Tahoe, no brainer. Same thing happening in Sonoma County, SLO, etc... Similar issues in Summit County Colorado but Summit County is less land constrained and they are more amenable to larger condo buildings (it's really hard to build in Tahoe because the runoff from construction screws up the lake).

Sad but true. On the plus side, we still have some pristine places that are not replaceable. Anyone think population control is not warranted?

It's not the rich people blocking construction in Tahoe - TRPA is adroitly protecting the lake and the vast majority of the land is US Forest Service land anyway.

If you read the article - the problem Tahoe has is that they are *not* building. Which, from an environmental standpoint is probably correct, the runoff from construction/etc... has really put a dent into the Lake. The issue has been that the Bay Area, or more so Sacramento has kept growing so there is more demand from close-ish areas.

It’s really hard to see a scenario where a bunch of rich people would use political pressure and/or a diversion to protect their unspoiled playground and their property values. 🙄
Hey, I’m all for not building at all at places like Tahoe. They aren’t making any more of them. If they can use environmental issues to stop it, that’s great. But it’s more than just that.

The protections by TRPA have been in place for decades, and if they weren't, a lot of rich people would be building a lot more there. Property values would be higher because land would be developable or re-developable. If you buy a dump on the California side of South Lake, you get a dump and it mostly stays that way because it's so hard to get a rebuild permitted. Near the Stateline, there has been a lot of redevelopment in place that replaced some real flea bag motels with high end lodging, but once you get 1/4 mile away from Nevada, it looks like the 1950's (and not in a good way).
It's uniquely different than Vail or Whistler or Park City, because you can't really do anything because the Lake is so unique and the topography is so narrow and rough, compared to those places which are basically on 4 lane super freeways direct from major metropolitan areas.
