Really embarrassing. As expected.
Champaign
SAT 9/10
3PM (get in line now)
ESPNU
Over/under line to get in or get food is 33:30.
Who cares what the betting lines are? Bielema keeps losing games where he has a 95% win expectancy late in the game.
-
VSIN says the books have the game: o/u between 55.5-57.5 and Illinois -4 to -4.5
Pick your book carefully!

I might tune in for a few minutes. Does that constitute “showing up?”

Same. I might, but certainly won't commit. I have to get the pool closed up, and I have a number of other things to do.
If they win, fine. If they lose, whatever. Kinda don't care. I was pretty optimistic until this Indiana game, or farce, or whatever the fuck that was. And our DIA apparently can't handle crowds at our stadium, and blah. Fuck it.
-

If your TV needs to warm up, Guenther Jr will shoot off fireworks for when you should turn it on so you are not late seeing the game.

Here in the upland South it seems almost anyone with a decent job has a badass in-ground pool and hot tub behind their big brick home and manicured lawn. Probably because the taxes are so low.
Somehow we still have good infrastructure and outstanding schools. Absolutely mind blowing. (Oh wait that’s because rich blue states subsidize all of this 🙄)
I spent 3x on taxes in Illinois for….fuck if I know. Decaying roads/bridges. High gas prices. Shitty schools shutting down due to strikes and Covid. Monumental assclown Lightfoot flailing around. Garbage policy and an enormous budget shortfall ad infinitum.
I’ve traveled a fuckton this year. A lot of it is carryover from not being able to travel before. I’ve spent plenty of time in major cities. The downtown areas of the major blue cities are some serious dystopian shit. No one is out and about during the day. You wouldn’t even know anyone is there working or doing business.
The hotels warn you not to go out alone at any time and not to go out at all after 10-11. Weeds and tall grass growing in the sidewalks and medians of downtown areas adjacent to the skyscrapers and 4/5 star hotels.
Any “green space” is occupied entirely by homeless tweakers sleeping on rugs, feet twitching and bopping to a beat no one else can hear. Dudes on bath salts or some shit physically threatening any young woman who wanders near the doorway they’re living in.
I’m actually enormously sympathetic to the kinds of people I’m talking about here. More than you can ever understand. But just leaving the downtown areas of major cities to ruin isn’t any kind of solution.
It’s weird because the whole Trump thing shifted me far away from the Republican camp. I’ve been dying for any Democrat candidate to speak any kind of truth to me.
But here I am circling back absolutely dumbfounded by what I see with my own eyes versus what is being espoused by the left. Like Josh Whitman, this shit sounds good but when put into action it falls flat on its face.
Literally everything is better here. But the biggest variable that sticks out to me is that people just seem much happier and more content.

I'm guessing they don't root for the Illini.
Go Illini!

Yeah, all the Southern Trumpers are such happy people pleading their perceived grievances. Ain't buying it.

All the people wanting to ban books in school libraries and public libraries are also very content people too.

The upland south includes somes nice, upscale areas. Lots of resort areas? There are also dirt poor areas with people living off the beaten tracks on welfare.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upland_South
The links I posted above to the states with the best schools and roads do not support the idea that red States are better. Other sources are consistent with that.
Resort areas that rely on tourism are probably going to prioritize roads?

My point is I am not sure they are as happy/content as they seem when eating Custard's bbq and drinking beer in light of the cultural warfare and politics. Granted, there are "progressives" who never seem happy and seem to only live to bitch.

Correct. At what point do people figure out that Guenther Jr is a buffoon?
-
Re-inventing the wheel does not always come easy.
-
Well that was a shitty second play.
-
Well already trying to lose the game with 2 turnovers so far on 2 possessions.
-
Defense is gonna get pissed at the offense real god damn quick.
-
Got out of those 2 turnovers ok. Time to start playing some football.

Oh, nice pass by Danny there. 14 might be enough to win.
-
Matt Ford sighting
-
Brandon Peters does not make the throws that Danny is making.
-
Amazing how defensive points puts a fresh coat of paint on mediocrity. We're in a great position going into the 2nd somehow.
-
Virginia must suck
-
At this rate, what the hell will we, and mean, I, have to bitch about?
-

They lost all 5 O linemen from last year apparently. It shows.

Other than the Hoosier's drive, the defensive improvement under Walters since last year's UVA game has been impressive.

No time for Love, Dr. Jones! Keep him in!

Game changing TO!
-
How about calling the hold?
-
Kicker going to Taco Bell
-
Can we get a TD before half please and look like a competent football program?
-
And, of course not....
-
4 fucking turnovers. This is ridiculous, yet somehow we’re up 18 points.
-
Ryan Walters deserves a head coaching job asap. Dude is a stud defensive coordinator.
But I sure don’t wanna see him go!
-
Hoos are 0-10 on 3rd down.
-
Don't think the DBs can complain about the officiating today
-
Think play conservative and not turn the ball over...oh, hey, a sack!
-
Both teams with 19 rushing attempts. They have 20 yards. Brown has 104.
264 to 114 in total yards.
Time of possession is even. Stop turning the ball over.
-
Will tackle for food
-
I like! I like! Might as well never punt or kick
-
Don't like the conservative play calling...... oh they went for it on fourth and got it.
yeah
-
Don't know what Danny was doing there
-
I like! I like! Might as well never punt or kick
Ahead of the Fucking Curve
Yeah, I'm quoting myself
-
Been an ugly ass game. 4 turnovers and poor kicking and punting against a good team and we’ll get smashed. Virginia is fucking terrible.
-
Take that pass play to Williams out of the play book. Too dangerous.
-
This fuckin defense is pretty good
-
6 yards for UVA in the 3rd qtr.
UVA had 423 yards passing last year and 556 for the game.
-
Ok, we need a new kicker. Enough of this bullshit.
-
This game should be 40-3
-
We have 1 quality running back, no kicker or punter, and a lot of marginal receivers. Getting Josh McCray back will make a difference.
-

Good thing it looks like the B1G West sucks ass.
-
A game with 2 Power 5 teams and we can't put 12 fannies in the stands ?
I saw some miserable, miserable teams with more people in the stands.
-
So Virginia sucks but nearly shutting out a P5 team is a big plus for the defense.
-
Good win! Work on Red Zone and turnovers over the bye. There's room for improvement and that's a good sign.
-

Oh yeah. Hell of a lot of room for improvement.
If I’m Virginia, I feel really bad about this one. 4 takeaways and 3 total points.
-
I wonder if tempo remembered to watch the game 🤔
-
Ryan Walters will get an SEC job again or HC chance at a smaller school. He’s too good for Illinois. Phenomenal defensive effort. 0-15 on 3rd down.
-

He’s a top-10 paid assistant. He’ll only leave here for a HC job. Take that to the bank. And that very well could be next season or sooner rather than later in my opinion.
-
Hey fuckers! Late to the party.
Attendance: embarrassing
Kicking:embarrassing
Defense: I like
Offense: Still needs work. Enought of the turnovers.Good lord!
Not sure we go bowling this year. But this is still better than Lovie ball. Bret needs to download the Noom app
-
I thought IU was a must win and this would be a decisive L. Guess it evens out. As mentioned earlier B1G west looks like hot garbage. Probably should make the six win mark. I haven’t seen a second of the game yet but 24-3 against a P5 opponent isn’t something we really do, like, ever. Sounds like some sloppy play and mistakes again that need work. Agree that Walters will probably end up somewhere else sooner than later. I think the place kicking will get better, Griffin is a high level talent that needs more game experience.

I think Bielema has gotten Illinois into the Jerry Kill Minnesota level, and if he maintains that I think fans will be fine with it. Close competitive football. It’s a low bar but it’s Illinois football. It’s not going to fill the stands, it’s not going to be the best Zook years, or best Turner years, but it’s acceptable.

Well, if you can get into the stadium and get a concession of your choice without missing 3/4 of the game, people may travel to see a competitive Illinois team. Especially if 11am games are not the default start time.
It would be nice if they found someone who could come in and do something different for the game day experience that would make people want to be there.

If blueblood teams like Oklahoma, USC, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Texas AM, Texas, Florida were to come calling it’d be very hard to keep him even if the money were matched as DC. It’s be a Self/Kansas or Antigua/Kentucky situation.
Walters fought an uphill battle at Mizzou, and is doing the same thing at Illinois. Prospective teams are probably thinking if he can get great results with minimal resources, think what he could do with great resources.
You can tell how good he is bc he’s taking guys that Lovie recruited and getting way more out of them than Lovie ever did.
If even a hater like myself can appreciate his success, other teams certainly can.

I think unless Illinois has an unusually great team (2001 or 2007), the football attendance is dead. Sure the Stadium environment is sterile. Most football attendance in average years is driven by the desire to come back to campus to relive the pageantry/traditions etc.
But with the Chief dead, Fight Song dead, an entire lost generation of younger alums (08-22) who saw nothing but bad football which created no attachments, older fans who did see success but are now too old too attend games (1980s)- I think it’s dead.
People could argue but basketball is still popular. But selling out 15,000 in the winter time is lot easier than getting 60,000-70,000 to spend a fall weekend in Champaign
-
The interesting thing is Tim Anderson, Chester Frazier, and Geoff Alexander are quite possibly a net gain over Orlando Antigua, Chin Coleman, and Stephen Gentry.
When Walters gets "promoted" Bret Bielema will be like Brad Underwood and find a quality replacement.
-
There are enough people in Illini country to get a good crowd there if they market it right.
-
Yeah just win. In the meantime give out a lot of free tickets and make sure they download them prior to the game.
-

"Winning" won't do it. We've all see them have one good/decent year and then fall off the cliff again. (But it has been awhile.) It will take consecutive years of winning at this point.

Are people not going because of the Chief? That is just an excuse, I think. They are not going because the program has been a dumpster fire as you say.
Winning would cure a lot. But they will need "winning plus X" to get people to show up. The question is, what is "X"? I can't say I've sought to contemplate it until now.
-

I think a lot of people stopped going because of the Chief. And then once that habit of going is broken, it’s much harder to regain those people.
I think sports attendance is a very habitual thing. So any reason that breaks the habit (Chief, Losing, University politics, all games are on TV, loss of traditions, disillusionment with campus, student demographics ) , it’s going to be much much harder to bring those people back if they find other stuff to do.
But most forms of entertainment are like that. It’s really prevalent with things like DirectTV or SiriusXM radio. Those companies give out huge discounts for renewals because they know if consumers cut their service and realize they don’t miss it, it’s very hard to get them back.
Illinois is really in a pickle at trying to retain season ticket holders bc they can’t just give massive discounts like a satellite company could.
I think you are right that there has to be an “X” other than winning. I think attendance in pro sports is driven by mostly just winning. But college sports you need something else.
-
On what planet does DirectTV give out discounts for renewals? Or should or I ask in what time line? The pre-Att directTV did that.
-
"Kelly and Tate had a former staffer on that talked about how in the 80’s they studied the demographics and something like 80-90% of the attending fans lived within 60 miles and so they marketed hard to those people and went out and did it in person." -- stolen from elsewhere

Mike White played an exciting brand of football plus not much to do in ECI/CI = go to Illini games. Add in that you could bring in bota bags, pass outs at half time, etc. etc. and people had a good time.

You have to call them up and ask to cancel. You’ll get sent to the retention dept and they will cut your price to get you to stay.
-
Box score said 33,669 total attendance. That is tickets sold not actual butts in the seats. If there were only 28,000 or so actually there that is really pathetic for a Power 5 opponent, in September, on an 83 degree day.
-
What's within 60 miles that can be considered Illini country? We've got Champaign, Douglas, Coles, and Moultrie counties. To some extent Edgar, DeWitt, and parts of Macon, McLean, Livingston, Ford, and Iroquois.
-

Every 12 months.
I fucked off DirecTV a couple years ago and went with Hulu. I don't watch a ton of TV, but Hulu has what I need mostly. Also told netflix to fuck off after their last price hike and now I get e-mails every week trying to offer it back at a lower rate, I think $9.99/month. Netflix' content got pretty stale.

Yeah anyone that doesn’t keep the promo deal they joined with is getting ripped off. You have to threaten to cancel everytime your promo gets close to expiring. I think some people don’t want the hassle of calling in so they just pay regular price but you don’t have too.

I did that for years. Since ATT took over, they said bye. And, oh, go to the UPS
store and send us our equipment or we will charge your credit card.
Basically, they told me I had used up my retention bonuses. I know others who had the same experience.
-
I also know people who turned in the equipment and still got charged.

No shit. I never had that issue, but I wasn't with them long after they were acquired by AT&T. I think I had been a DirecTv customer for about 15 years. Never broke any of their equipment, hardly ever called for service aside from a few remotes that crapped out. My only real gripe was the price and if it rained at all, I'd lose service.
-
One thing I’d definitely change is move the student tickets out of the North End Zone. Those seats suck. If I was a student now, I wouldn’t want to go to the game only to get stuck in the end zone.
When I was in school 99-04, all the Greeks had blocks of tickets. And also regular student tickets could be bought and they’d all be pretty good seats. Around the 20-40 yard line of the East Balcony. So there was an incentive for students to go bc we had first access to pretty good seats. But it would have sucked to be stuck in the north end zone if it was around back then. And back then the cheapest tickets were always horseshoe.
So if you want to get students to the game, don’t give them the worst seats in the house
-
Is the block I section still a thing? Was on the east side, right?

Nobody gives a shit about that stuff if the team is winning and the games are fun to go to.
-

Define winning.
7-5 isnt gonna put butts in the seats. I doubt 8-4 does either.
It’s easy to say “if the team is 12-0, there will be sellouts”. But since that’s not the norm, you have to be able to pull people in based on traditions apart from winning. Illlinois has blatantly killed most of their traditions that turned off fans.
Even though it’s pro sports, look at the attendance differences between the Cubs and White Sox. Even when the White Sox are good, they still can’t draw near as much as even bad Cubs team. Fans go to Wrigley for the ambience/tradition. Even if the team sucks, many still go for the experience.
Illinois at this point is basically the White Sox of college sports. It’s a sterile environment, no tradition, in a location many argue is not worth driving too.
-
The new procedures are a success.
https://www.wcia.com/news/local-news/illini-fans-react-to-new-game-day-changes/amp/
"Cassie Arner, the senior associate director of athletics, said everything ran smoothly. "
Va attendance. 33669
Wyoming attendance. 37832
4000 fewer tickets for a game against a P5 team may have helped. :D
-
Hard to blame people for not showing up after that gut wrenching loss to IU. But glad they could somewhat accommodate the dozens that did come to the game.
-
2 of the 3 UVA players shot and killed played. Lavel Davis Jr had 2 receptions with a long of 62 and D'Sean Perry had a tackle.
RIP to all 3.
-
Just awful.
-
Horrible, horrible tragedy.
-
Yeah extremely sad situation. I do wanna know what the shooter’s motive was. It sounds like from the article that there was a hazing incident involving him that was dropped due to lack of witnesses cooperating. He was a freshman RB in 2018 and might’ve been a victim to some very serious stuff happening to him and nothing ever came of it unfortunately. Possibly something traumatic could’ve happened to him to want to do such a thing, I don’t know. All in all, it is a very sad story and outcome for all.
