It’s a little strange that people who were relatively gung-ho about shutting down schools and bars and restaurants might shy away from that solution. But the gay angle raises the specter of discrimination and stigmatization, so instead many officials opted for obfuscation and a lack of clarity.

I never understood the resentment some displayed over this and masks. To borrow a popular cesspool phrase, it just seems like strange hills to die on.
We have accepted indoor smoking bans, seat belt & helmet laws, no shirts - no shoes - no service, mandatory auto insurance, and other such limits on freedom of choice. Heck, a guy can get on the sex offender registry in some states for taking a leak in an alley.
