Title: Illini/Houston thread w/encouraging news
Post by: Reacher on March 20, 2022, 03:42:46 AM
Things look bleak, but I just saw that Houston is only 1-4 against quad 1 teams this year. If our guards come to play, we’ll win. Big if off recent form, though.

Will be tough game.
They are now ranked second in KenPom.

Apparently Trent had a secondary infection in his eye caused by the conjunctivitis. Affected his vision and he played tentatively on offense. Supposedly better today.

All tournament games can be tough.  We just played and won one.  Houston had a cakewalk.  I'll gladly take the battle tested Illini on the money line.

Today would be a good day for him to get out of his slump.  C'mon Trent!

Shooting, like pink eye, can be contagious. It's about time we spread some hot shooting around. It's been a while, and we are capable.

Coming into their conference tournament they had beaten zero tournament teams this year.  They’ve won two since (Memphis, who also beat UH twice, in the conference tourney, and UAB Friday).

They can beat us, but we’ll be the best team they’ll have seen in a while.

Will depend a lot on our shooting, can’t afford to keep slumping like we have been.  Break out and we can definitely win.

Really hard to assess.
Their metrics on D and overall are impressive, but the schedule is suspect.
That said, they just beat Memphis by 18 and Memphis looked like a Top 10 team.

They lost to Wisky early by 2.

We have to hit shots but they guard like mthrfckers based on their D stats.

I read that Illinois has only beaten a higher seed in the tourney 2x....suppose that is what they are posting on Cougars HQ2.

Memphis looked better last night than we have in any game in the last few weeks.

We need at least two guards to show up and actually want to shoot the ball.

If they lag off him he's going to have to knock down some 3s to warrant minutes.

WTF, Hawkins, take the open shot rather than pass to Curbelo for a(nother) 3 point miss. There is no worse shot in college basketball than Curbelo, shortly upon entering the game for the 1st time, jacking a 3 pointer. Curbelo can do many things to help the team but 3 point shooting isn't his forte. Not by a long shot.

Houston is so much bigger and more athletic at the guard spots and they got the right game plan.

Crowd Kofi and Plummer and play soft on Hawkins/Curbelo. Bait them into taking those open 3s.

Curbelo and Hawkins being open means Curbelo and Hawkins should be dribble-driving and looking to kick to Kofi or a spot shooter.

Neither one can get by the defender though because they’re sagging off and when they drive it clogs the lane. The other Houston defenders are staying with our other shooters and clogging Kofi’s space. That’s exactly what they want.

Good to see RJ making things happen.

Credit to RJ and Goode for coming and preventing a blow out.

Inexplicable rotations in the tourney. Held in the 50s against lower seeds when you have 3 senior guards and an AA center.

Hope Melendez stays but I won't be surprised if he leaves. Curbelo, can't play under control and the mustard comes off the hot dog too often. If he leaves, he leaves. Get to where I don't care about him.  Kofi? He needs to learn how to pass out of double and triple teaming. Will miss Trent. Williams, won't miss him and the coaching staff giving him so many minutes just because his last name is Williams.
Coaching MUST get better from BU on down. Sub rotations stink. Offense stinks.

Appreciate the seniors who brought us back to national relevance. It’s been mostly a fun ride. Wish they could have gone out on a better note. KenPom doesn’t lie. Houston’s defense was outstanding. Hate to say it but Sampson is an outstanding coach.

National relevance just because made the tournament 2 years in a row?

We're not a good team. Houston kicked our ass and highlighted everything that's wrong with this team and coach. See ya

We were pretty inconsistent all year, sucks we played our worst ball in march

I wouldn't say national relevance other than being a top 25 team but we are no longer a dumpster fire so we have that going for us.... I think you are forgetting how bad we have been since Dee Brown graduated 16 years ago

I don't Melendez leaving for basketball reasons.

Curbelo I see leaving and I'm not heartbroken because the guy developed less than any freshman-soph in memory.

Most of the people who follow college basketball have spent most of the last two years talking about Illinois being a national title contender squad. Being a 1 seed and a 4 seed and probably a 5 seed in 20 if the tournament wasn’t cancelled. Two second place finishes and a first place finish and a BTT title. That’s national relevance by any definition.

Because nationally they are wondering how you can have 1st and 2d team All Americans and get pantsed by Porter Moser?

Nah we’ve got some good recruits coming in. I’d say we should still see the tourney next year.

We will need some transfers.
Next year starts today.

Again, the problem was not firing Bruce Weber, or Ron Zook, it is who was hired by the morons in Champaign to replace them.

Why would Melendez leave? He was becoming a rotation guy until he had the appendicitis surgery. He will be a starter next year.
Underwood loves him.

When I said he's a starter earlier, I meant he's a starter for the type of player we need more of. Some size and athleticism to go with what he does well. Put some muscle on him during the off season.

It will be years until Illinois makes the tourney again.  Kofi was the entire  difference.

Melendez has shown enough this year that I think he’ll have some good offers in the portal.  He reminds me of Grayson Allen when he played at Duke.

Curbelo, as I said in December, is gone.

The starters next year assuming Kofi leaves:

C- Dainja
PF- Hawkins
SF- Goode
SG- Harris
PG- Transfer

That’s a 20 loss team

Again, they are in the S16 and Illinois is going home... Again.

If Illinois were an SEC school, Brad fucking Underwood would get back and see that some staffer packed his office for him after he shit his pants in the tourney the past 2 years.

Today sucks for sure but all we can do is keep getting back here and try again. You have to make the tourney to make noise in the tourney. That's a low bar to clear, sure, but it's also a low bar we haven't consistently cleared in a long ass time before Underwood got here.

Like Tempo always says, bites at the apple.

And yet the response to calling for Underachiever's head because he has sucked in the tourney is to focus on his conference record,  his co-B1G regular season titles, and his record versus Juwan Howard.

LOL. We've kept every revenue sport coach who should've been fired a year or more longer than we should have. A large part of that is the blue hairs and Boomer townies/Napervillish boosters are drunk on Koolaid. Of Power 5 teams we have to be in the more tolerant half.

See the clip of the foul called on Curbelo where he didn't even touch the guy who wasn't under control going to the hoop. ASSUMED Curbelo hit him because he badly missed the layup?

RJ hangs on rim to slow his momentum. No one around him. Get's T'd up.

Kofi literally gets teabagged by a Maryland player hanging on the rim. No call.

I don't want to sound like a "refs have it out for Illinois" guy but....
