I wish I could be there but I have a family Christmas to go. That 2000-2001 team should have won it all. A more experienced Self as coach and they would have won it all.
That team was so deep, but college basketball was so deep at that time too.
Look at the Zona team that year
Richard Jefferson, Loren Woods, Luke Walton, Gilbert Arenas,Michael Wright, Jason Gardner
We never should have been in same bracket as Arizona though. I say Iowa St or UNC, but whatever
ANyone going?

Wish I could make it. That would be awesome.
-
that 01 team was fucking loaded, I had season tickets that year... great memories
-
That was my sophomore year I didn’t get season tickets until the next two years. 🥺

I didn't get to see the Flyin Illini' , I think the 01 team was best team I have ever seen. Even better than the 05 team, as great as that team was, they had nothing inside besides Augustine and Powell
The 01 team was deeeeeeep

I remember leaving my house during the Seton Hall game thinking it was over for sure then coming home finding out they won. I was only 12 but i was kicking myself hard that day

I’ve said it before, and I still believe it. Self would have won more national titles if he’d stayed at Illinois.

I agree with this.

According to Wikipedia (could easily be wrong, obviously) Self only makes 4 million a year. That can’t be right. He had to be making that 10+ years ago.

According to USA today, 5.41 million. Article written April 2nd 2021.

People criticize Self for his lack of success in the tourney, yea he's had bad losses but hasn't every coach?
It took 14 seasons of coaching for Self to win the national title which is sooner than Coach K, Dean Smith, Jim Boehiem, Jim Calhoun,John Calipari.
Guy had made it to at leats the sweet 16, 12 out of 23 times.

The NCAA men's basketball tournament is all about matchups. More than any other sport, basketball can be dominated by 1 player who can do everything (e.g., no goalie, pitcher, back row rules, etc.). Self deserves sh*t (and the Lute Olson award) for having several highly ranked, high seed & "loaded" rosters choke early in the NCAA Tournament. He's not alone in that regard.
Dean Smith is the only one who was able to hold Michael Jordan under 20ppg. Given all the talent that Smith recruited to UNC, he definitely underachieved in terms of national championships. How his 1983-84 team -- featuring MJ, Sam Perkins, Kenny Smith & Brad Daugherty -- didn't win it all defies explanation. IMO, that is the best college men's basketball team never to win the national championship.

Because Georgetown was good?

Because Georgetown was good?
Indiana beat North Carolina in the 1984 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Bob Knight was a much better coach than Dean Smith.
-
Walter Young
I remember him from the football team (had a TD ruled incomplete vs #1 Ohio State) but I have no recollection of him playing basketball.
On a team as stacked as that I’m surprised they’d even need him as a practice body. Wasn’t Arch, Damir, Lucas enough?

Okay.

I mean, the mid-1980s is prolly gonna be the golden age of NCAA basketball when it's all said and done. Jordan didn't make the varsity team as a sophomore right? Projecting 1992 Jordan on 1984 Jordan is silly. Steve Alford and Uwe Blab were pretty fucking effective within that offensive structure. Stew Robinson shot 54% from the floor that year.
I'm sure Dean Smith didn't adapt to the evolving game as well as others did, and I'm sure that Bob Knight was responsible for that evolution (fuck him for that, because basketball as soccer is a shitload less fun), but to suggest that any team of that era was dominant is just stupid.
Houston was dominant. They got beat by NC State. Georgetown was dominant. They got beat by Rollie Massimino.
Fucking St. John's was dominant.

Still seems relatively cheap in today’s climate.

Damir and Lucas both had injuries in 01-02. 01-02. Powell was a freshman and otherwise they were thin at forward with respect to practice depth.

There is no projection on my part. Jordan was already considered to be a top 3 pick heading into the NCAA Tournament. The question was whether he was going to be picked at #2 or #3. Olajuwon was the consensus #1 pick. Portland picked Sam Bowie #2 because the Trailblazers already had Clyde Drexler (and the team had a knack for drafting oft-injured big men). Fellow Tar Heel Sam Perkins was considered top 10 pick and was drafted #4, one spot after Jordan. Talent-wise, that Indiana team wasn't even in the same galaxy (figuratively speaking) as North Carolina. Uwe Blab and Steve Alford? Please. Why don't you bring up Dan Dakich while you're at it. Dean Smith managed to do what no opposing coach should have been able to accomplish -- prevent a roster full of (future) NBA talent from winning the NCAA Championship that season.

You know who else played in the NBA?
Luther Head
Dee Brown
Deron Williams
James Augustine
and
Roger Powell

I felt like Arizona had far more skilled basketball talent so I’m not surprised they won. They had better players.
Is Nick Smith the only guy from that team not going to be there? Other than Powell who has a job, and the late Arch? It always seemed to me Nick Smith hated basketball and didn’t want anything to do with it when he was done. Shame he never embraced tallest Illini in history bc he was popular

No way. At best he’d have positioned Illinois in a similar way as Michigan State under Izzo but they’ve only won 1.
Self at Illinois was never going to turn them into a blue blood.
-
Who knows? The 05 team would have had Charlie Villanueva on it had Self stayed. Guys like Julian Wright and Sherron Collins would have been the successors to the 05 team rather than Charles Jackson and Trent Frazier.

That’s exactly what happened.
I woke up at 5 am with a stiff neck and couldn’t fall back asleep. Took some ibuprofen and fell back asleep at 8 after everyone had breakfast. Woke up right before I posted that travesty.

Someone I know on Facebook was giving away traditions club tickets for today. Must have had something come up.
I was 5 minutes away from scoring them. He had just given them away. Damn.

the downfall of illinois buckets after Self left. Definitely would be a blue blood with probably a couple national championships.

This happens with some regularity that a stocked team loses to slightly less stocked teams. It's not like they lost to high schoolers. The *7 seed* in their bracket that went to the Final Four had 4 guys who played in the league and multiple ACs who later established themselves as good head coaches.

2 minutes for Hawkins. Is he in the dog house ?

Fair question. Seems they're trying to integrate Goode or Podz more than in past games. May be based on practice this last week as well.

Up 54 and Kofi is still in with over 5 minutes left. Interesting.
-
18 threes. New single game record.

Shoot 65%, and 53% from 3.

They want that double-double. Stats are important when he could have a legit chance at NPOTY.

Quick note- RJ Melendez needs more minutes. He should be taking them from Damonte imo.

Dumb.
You can think what you’d like. His stat line was better in fewer minutes.
Giving him and extra 5 minutes a game isn’t dumb, but whatever. Have you ever even played basketball? 😂

How was halftime celebration?

I'm disappointed BTN didn't show that instead of the studio heads stuff. They did show Cook, Sergio, and Bradford walking out and a group shot that seemed to be missing a few people off the advertised list.

Glad to see the freshmen get some playing time

Lucas didn’t look like he aged a bit. Damir looks about 50 tho with his gray hair.
Griffin needs to lose some weight.
Rest of the guys look how you’d expect

Lucas and I were among the small contingent of Illini fans in attendance when Juice Williams ran all over the Buckeyes in Columbus. Got a high five from Lucas waiting in line to go to the bathroom. Good memory.

What are Illini doing playing these bums in late December ?
-
What are Illini doing playing these bums in late December ?
Moving 2 conference games to December means 2 non-con filler games get pushed back, and few big-time teams want to play each other during finals time.
-
What are Illini doing playing these bums in late December ?
Only bums we can beat in the Non Conf…
We lost to all the good ones…
