Title: 2021 Hoops Rankings
Post by: ridingthegrange on October 18, 2021, 02:34:56 PM
We're #11 in the AP Pre-Season Poll behind MI-6 and PU-7.  Season can't get here quick enough.  We've maybe never had a deeper team.  I'm counting on Belo to make this work!

Sounds about right. Will be interesting year.

Pre-season all they want....we will be better than last years squad. If Belo becomes more secure with decisions and handling, but still keeps the creativeness with teammates, we are so far from one dimensional it could be scary.

Ayo was the one that we needed, when we needed him....nothing away from him, but teams at least could try to game plan for him....Belo is such an extreme guard, if his mental game and his outside shooting is improved, well....maybe we lose to Purdue, Michigan I think we handle, Ohio St. we handle, who else is there?

This is going to be a fascinating year in college ball with many teams deeper and more experienced than normal. We're a breakout player from an Elite Eight team and a bad bounce from the NIT so it should be fun.

Huh?! 🤨

You seriously think the team this year could be one bad bounce away from an NIT bid?? 🤨

Well said.  I also think that the teams who rely heavily on the "one and dones", will be disadvantaged by the historical experience they'll be facing.  There's more than a few BYU type teams this year.

A team ranked 5 (KenPom) 7 (CBS) and 11 (AP) and picked anywhere from 1-3 in the B1G is a bad bounce from the NIT? I fully expect this team to be far more dangerous in the postseason than last year’s.

Yeah I mentioned that earlier and no idea wtf he’s talking about with the NIT thing.

How long have you been an Illinois fan?  Some of us are a bit scarred.

One of my earliest memories was the snowy rose bowl parade my small town threw for the 1983 Big 10 champion Illini.

This roster is good.

Cool!  I enjoyed my first trip to a bowl then.  Everything was spectacular but the game.

My point is simply that there's more variance than normal in how good other teams are going to be compared to us.  Basketball is a different animal than football. We're stocked but lost our best player, which means we're somewhere between national title contender and the bubble.

Speaking of AcePuppy, haven’t seen his favorite fan Lkdog around for a while. That sucks for him. I think we’ll be happy with Plummer as a replacement.

If by NIT you mean NITWIT correlation, then yes one bounce/thought away from that...NO way this team goes NIT, hell we should all be dissappointed with more than 3 B1G losses and a 4 seed or lower come tourney time.

We should get placed once again with say Okla St/Kansas/LSU...just due to some sort of ratings connections. A 2 seed in same bracket with say Texas or Arkansas may not bode too well.

Again, it’s amazing how one can be controversial/perpetually “wrong,” yet so safe in his predictions. Only here, I guess.

Plummer has a lot of game and a lot of attitude. Lkdog loves shooters.

Sporting News has us at #3

“3. Illinois

Coach: Brad Underwood

Key returnees: C Kofi Cockburn, PG Andre Curbelo, SG Trent Frazier, SG Da’Monte Williams, SG Jacob Grandison

Key additions: SG Austin Hutcherson, PF Omar Payne, SG Alphonso Plummer

2021 finish: 24-7, NCAA second round

Why they’re here: They’ve got the best center in college basketball and maybe the best point guard – isn’t that a great place for the Illini to start? Well, progress from there will have to include Cockburn adding more versatility to his game and, more important, Curbelo showing he can make a jumpshot. And beyond that, there’s whether Hutcherson is the approximation of Duncan Robinson – from Division III star to Division I standout – as his practice performances suggest, and what role Plummer will fill on a team that has three veteran guards. And who provides the length to make the perimeter defense work at last season’s elite level?“

Let’s see what he does now that Antigua and Coleman aren’t doing his recruiting.

It's certainly plausible we'll be better than last year, but I wouldn't cite no Antigua and no Coleman as the reason.

I think we may win more games than we did last year.  But in actuality, we may lose more.  But there is another possibility.  We may win the exact same number of games.

So, if we win more, well, I could see that, but I could also see us losing more.

Ha!  But, we may play a different number of total games, and could win more and lose more, or win less and lose less.  I'll go with all of the above.

The same record addition is a good one. Extremely well done.

Not sure on this one....but I am sure he will be a better teammate by all accounts.
