Wasn’t he basically the runner-up to Weber getting the Illini job in ‘03? Think about all of the pain and suffering we could have avoided had we just hired him. Seems like there’s all the evidence in the world we’d have continued to be a top 20 program.
Fittingly, it parallels what I’ve been saying for years. Weber and Groce’s biggest failures wasn’t missing on 5 star players. It was missing on 3-4 star players we could have had that we passed over.
-
Groce had about 20 experienced seniors and started BIG10 play at Md after a good non-con.
We lost by what seemed like 50.
-
Didn't Altman want to bring all of his assistants and we said no??
That was smart.
-
I heard a story that was something like that. Keeping McClain was a prereq (and frankly would have been dumb to replace him).
Altman also flaked hard on Arkansas so ?
-
Now this is a classic Tempo34 threadstarter.

Good point. My memory is hazy, but didn't he accept the Arkansas job and then back out??
-
Oh Jesus, here we go....🙄
-
Altman was fired from Kansas State for losing too much.
Not really what the fan base was looking for in 2003.
Of course, they weren't pining for an awkward dork, either.
-
Wow. Ok, guys. I'm gonna try to hang in there. But thread starters like these make it very difficult.
I mean, what's the fucking point? Jesus Christ, are we going to be pining for Dana Altman now, and what could have been?
ikr, shit got me like this

Altman's a good coach. Don't think he's going anywhere else. Eugene's a tough place to leave. His teams are mostly positionless, athletic, and play hard and fast. It's an entertaining brand and reminds one at times of our 89 team.

He has his system running pretty well. 5 guys averaged double figures which is hard to prep for.
-
I was in my final semester at UI when Self left. As a lifetime fan of Illinois basketball, I vividly remember the coaching search. I remember pulling into the bookstore that is now Binny’s and listening to coaching talk and being excited about what Thad Matta brought to the table. He became my guy at that moment. I was ok with Weber as a backup. But man Altman was just a complete non-starter at that time.
But...with the advantage of 20/20 hindsight, you’re right. Again.
-
Jobu going ballistic over this thread: mission accomplished.

Altman was almost a decade removed from KSU at that time.
-
Oh, so that's okay then. The fan base would love it because, although he'd been fired from the Big 8, he was 175-100 in the Missouri Valley and had just finished in second place behind Bruce Weber.
-
Come on Tempotime, you mother fucker. You like to talk shit. This is a perfect thread for it.
What in the fuck are you doing?
You fucking pussy.
Should I crown you as my #1 fan? Carry you in my pouch like a Kangaroo, nurture you and guide you to the ways of the illinihq message board force?
In all seriousness though. At the time Altman was overrated at Mid Major Creighton and I doubt he would’ve cracked the Chicago recruiting market.
Bottom line is we needed to pony up the cash to get another Self type coach and our glorious Guenther would have none of it. I bet he dared Self to leave without countering.
-
What a relief. I thought you might actually be retarded.
Turns out it’s just a master troll. Whew.
No, I’m being serious. We’d have probably been a hell of a lot better off if we’d just hired Altman in ‘03. I also heard assistants being the deal-breaker. Which is ridiculous. Just find another job for McClain or one of his assistants.
-
No, you should shove a buttplug up your ass, stand on your head and jack off. Then report back.
Hold on a minute here. Is this because I referenced you last night?
The F — — K Dude was wondering if I would leave peacefully, but I told him I didn’t want to be a quitter like Jobu and get banned instead.
If that offended you Jobu I apologize. I know how you Millenial cancel culture folks react to everything now. Like a raining Snowflake.
-
Dude...I was joking. Ya know, fucking around?
By the way, I’m an x-er. Definitely not millennial. Lol
Are you sure?
I mean I just saw you post a thread yesterday threatening to quit over Tempo.
I don’t want to push you over the edge.
-
The olive branch is extended, Tempotime. Take it, or leave it. Up to you.
For what?
I’m not the one that called me out calling me every name in the book 🤣🤣🤣.
I saw that and I was like damn...
Jobu is an easy fish.
-
Fair enough. My bad for calling you out.
It’s all good Jobu.
I was just giving you what you asked for.🤣🤣🤣

McClain staying was the cost of doing business
-
Guenther spoke at McClain's funeral.
I don't remember why it was vital to keep Wayne on the staff. Was it Shaun Livingston?
-
You know as well as I do that he happened to have direct involvement over one of the best stretches of downstate talent in Illinois history. Probably even more talent than the Irvins have brokered the past five years.
I’m sure it was just coincidence that that guy ends up as a HS-direct-to-P5 assistant coach at Illinois shortly after all those dudes were playing basketball at Illinois. And Livingston.
-
Ok, so you are retarded.
Sorry. I forgot this is your schtick. Make statements that are impossible to support or refute and treat them like fact.
Waste of time.
What did I treat like a “fact?”
-

You're saying it was payback?
It probably wasn't because we needed Jamar Smith or a seventh-grade DJ Richardson, right?
-
What else could it have been? I’m sure they were hoping it would pay future dividends as well.
-
I guess nothing. You do carefully word shit, I'll give you that. Words like probably are your friend.
Can't believe we're pining for Dana Altman.
After watching our offense look like paint drying against a dough boy and his buddies people liked seeing a team that could score easily I guess.
-

Not really “pining,” just saying the past 15 years would have probably been a hell of a lot better if we’d hired him.

I think his success has more to do with Phil Knight and that massive pile of Nike money than his actual coaching ability
would Dana have been able to lure top recruits to Illinois with small time thinker FURG at the helm? probably not

Agreed. We can play “what if” all day long, but the circumstances are way different here than there. Even more so at that time. I don’t think a guy like Altman gets the recruits here like he can at a place like Oregon. Nike has a whole lot to do with his success there imo.
But honestly, who the fuck cares. Hypotheticals are pointless. It didn’t happen. Move on. Damn this is so redundant. And somehow Tempo is gonna try to claim he’s “right” somehow in this thread eventually.

No, there’s no way to prove that; but it’s a reasonable assumption. It’s funny how you always try to make everything about me. I was just basically giving a cap-tip to Altman for having a solid career, and pointing out how close we might have been to living a pretty different Illini experience the past 15 years. Of course, I can’t prove anything, but it likely would have been much better than ‘07-‘18. Altman seems to be maybe a slightly lesser version of Lon Kruger, and I think that could’ve been alright.

My apologies. I guess it is a message board and that’s what these things are for. I guess it sometimes irks me that you’re constantly playing the “what if” game and then eventually use it to somehow try to prove you were “AOTC” or “right” in some manner. I don’t mind the discussion, but it appears you’re really the only one who does that on here and I know I’m not the only one who thinks that. So there is some legitimacy to it. I suppose I’m just waiting for the “I gotcha moment.”😂
If not and it’s just an honest discussion, then my apologies. Carry on.....

Dana got one game farther than we did by beating our rival that we swept for the season. No one but Oregon and Iowa fans will remember this Oregon team. Tons of CBB fans will remember what Illinois did in that stretch in Feb and early March. And unfortunately for the early tourney exit as well. Maybe they’ll wake up here.
-
Lol

The latter, definitely; the former, doubtful.
-
Altman not dead just yet.
-
Give him another three to five minutes.
-
That was a short-lived comeback.
