He and Underwood having been hired the same cycle probably weighed into his firing. If Brad was still bumbling along trying to get traction rather than rampaging into the tourney as a 1 seed after dispatching murderer’s row, they’d probably be more inclined to give him more time.

Good catch. Holtmann is outstanding. Ohio St went to Indiana to get him while Indiana went to Ohio to get Archie.
Wonder where Archie will resurface. Maybe Groce can get him a gig in the MAC.

I think he's a good coach leaving a bad job, certainly better than Bruce when Bruce lateralled his custard ass to K State.
Will laugh if Minnesota hires him.

Indiana probably is a bad job the same way Nebraska has turned into a bad job.

I agree (along with Holtmann's success at OSU). It's interesting, though, because IU's other revenue program (football) appears to be on an upswing but apparently even that wasn't enough to buy Miller another season. Per the IU release, private sources are paying for unbudgeted amounts of the $10.3M buyout.
Things could get interesting if John Beilein and/or Thad Matta decide to get back into coaching college basketball.

No shit? He also had a large buyout and if his 2017 coaching class peers weren’t kicking ass on either side of them they might have been inclined to wait one more year. DWC seemed to have comprehended what I said.

To your point, those 2 coaches can be very selective if/when they decide to return to coaching college basketball. That being said, I can think of at least 1,850,000 reasons per year, probably a lot more for either of those individuals. Coaches want to coach if they're still able to do so. It's their mindset. That's why Urban Meyer is returning to the sidelines. He had 2 relatively stress-free, decent paying jobs (Fox CFB analyst, Assistant AD at OSU) but still opted to return to coaching football. Beilein and Matta have come so close to winning a national championship; it's the one professional achievement their resume is lacking. I think that will weigh heavily on their decision (if offered) -- can they win a NC at that school? History says yes at IU, which has won 5 NCs in men's basketball, though none since 1987. Box checked.
There is plenty of really good basketball talent within @500 miles of IU's campus. Butler managed to make back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship game and it's located only an hour away from Bloomington. I don't closely follow IU sports, but my understanding is recruiting was not the issue for the Hoosiers under Miller. The players & system just didn't work out for whatever reason(s). A really good coach is not going to shy away from high expectations; they'll just make sure their contract affords sufficient protection, and that they can trust the AD to have their back. In the end, I really don't mind Indiana being down in basketball, as it helps Illinois and Ohio State in recruiting.

Matta grew up an IU fan and if there was one job he’d come back for, it would probably be that one. If I were IU I would have serious concerns about hiring him unless his time off has gotten him back to sustainably decent health. His performance at tOSU declined in lock step with his health.

If you want to argue that he set the bar so high for himself that it was unsustainable, then I guess I can agree.
But those last four seasons demonstrated a fairly linear decline culminating in the two poorest seasons of his entire tenure at tOSU. So not sure why we need to put it in quotes like the decline is questionable. Coincidentally, Thad’s final year record of 17-15 was the same as Weber’s final season at Illinois.
As to the 40 thing, I’ll find out in 9 days. Not sure about you and Thad’s fires, but the vast majority of the most consistent coaches in college basketball passed the 40 mark long ago. Hell Underwood is damn near 60.

It's possible to reach sixty in great health. Thad didn't make it to fifty. It happens.
There's a reason we've never seen a 50 year-old quarterback. After 45, you need a lotta cream n' clear just to approach a thirtysomething's capabilities.

I would be shocked if Thad comes back to a job with high major recruiting expectations, and I can't imagine their fans being thrilled with that hire.

I thought Archie was a great hire. Not sure why it didn’t work out, but a decline in local talent surely didn’t help. I’d be surprised if we’ve heard the last of Archie Miller.
