The Michigan State game that year also impressive. I think we scored on like 16 straight possessions at one point in the game. We didn't beat them as much as we did Wake Forest, but MSU was better that year than Wake.

I'm still sitting here amazed. We didn't just win we annihilated them. We were Gozilla they were japan.

I just had a calm feeling about this game. Maybe because I knew if we lost it wasn’t a big deal. But I also felt Michigan hadn’t really played a team of our overall caliber that has a legit big man to neutralize Dickinson and their offensive/rebounding attacks on the glass.
As has been discussed before the absence of Ayo has allowed other guys to step up and shine. In these situations sometimes guys step up and sometimes they don’t. We’ve seen no fewer than 4 individuals elevate their respective games since the MSU debacle.
We definitely don’t seem as stagnant in the half court as we did with everyone deferring to Ayo. We know at times that we tend to play down to our competition and I’m left to wonder if the deference hasn’t been the primary reason for that.
The game plan tonight was fantastic. The Illini took them out of everything they wanted to do defensively. We attacked the basket and got whatever we wanted on the offensive end.
I was convinced they were going to make a run between the 15 and 10 min mark but the defense actually seemed to ratchet up another level at that point. Forced them into a ton of bad shots and contested everything at the rim and did so mostly without fouling.
Some fantastic individual performances but most importantly just a complete team ass-kicking. With COVID and the weird schedule imbalances and playing fewer games than normal it seems somewhat surreal. Regardless I am trying really hard to soak all this in...because having growing up in the 80s and attending UI in the early 00s I took being respectable for granted.

Zero offense in the interior and we’re just chucking 3’s…they don’t even look at our all American in the interior…
Defensively…When Kofi isn’t in Michigan gets whatever it wants in the interior and even when Kofi is in Michigan gets whatever it wants from short to mid range..
So basically it looks like we chuck 3’s and play no defense…I don’t see this as a FF team…

Grandison had a nice cut to the hoop. I was pleased that we didn't have to rely on threes to stretch the lead. In fact, we only attempted 3 threes the entire 2nd half and our first attempt didn't come until there were 9 minutes to go in the game. The other two came in the final minute of the game.
They had no answer for us except for when Martelli finally switched to zone and it made us all kinds of discombobulated. It makes you wonder why he didn't deploy it earlier. If he had, we might have been donezo.
But I guess you have to gripe because Underwood didn't win it your way.

I think we only took like 3 threes the second half. Plummer was in the TO room for not single-handedly stopping the other team's ball screen action.

What’s so amazing about Tempo is his incredible confidence when speaking on topics about which he’s clearly ill-informed.
Sure, we had a couple bad possessions when they made their run, but frankly our defense just lapsed for a stretch and Michigan made shots. Basketball is a game of runs, and it seems like it becomes more and more apparent each season.
Thought Trent was going to choke Grandison after one of their transition opportunities cut the lead down to four I think. While backpedaling, Trent pointed out to Jake precisely where he needed to be, but Jake completely spaced and let Jones go right by him. Had he been where Trent told him to be, he would have cut him off. I watched that play about five times on replay and it just goes to show how incredible Trent is.
The best part, though, is Tempo bitching about the offensive sequence during the possession Trent knocked down the sick crossover step back to ice it. If this doesn’t totally encapsulate the dude’s lack of basketball knowledge, I don’t know what possibly can.
We ran the clock to 10 and then ran a phenomenal play to get Jake a WTFO look on the wing where he likes it, but it was long. Hawkins sailed across the court from ~25 feet away and snatched the board to give us a reset.
It got kicked back out to Trent and they ran the same set to give Trent an option to go left or right with the bigs trailing. Only this time Houstan pushed Trent out to the center line and was absolutely hounding him with the kind of defense it seems only desperate players get away with in the waning moments of a game they’re losing. (The same kind we played late against AZ in 05, Purdue on Feb 8, and Thursday against OSU, et al)
Houstan’s length and quickness are a major problem when he is allowed to reside in someone’s cylinder like that. Nevertheless, Trent got to his spot, got him on his heels, and did what he does best.

It has nothing to do with Underwood (in the way that you’re arguing anyway). I’ve been quite complimentary of him lately. My problem is that we suck at running any type or motion or misdirection offense. Puts all the weight on Kofi and the outside shooters. I just want to see more easy baskets when the 3s aren’t raining. It’s basketball 101. Ball screens, pick and roll, backcuts. We’re not that proficient at any of it.

Yes, Trent made a great play, as he’s done many times over his career. It doesn’t mean that standing around waiting for Trent to do something awesome on a critical possession is “running good offense.”

If Trent misses that shot, which he’d do about 65% of the time, that possession looks awful.

The players ran the play that was called. The same play that had just resulted in a wide open three moments before. When the coach calls a set play, guys off the ball don’t just start running motion.
And it isn’t exactly the easiest to call another offensive set off a long offensive rebound with a reset 20 second shot clock. Going back to the set and having your best players improvise is pretty much how all coaches handle it in that situation.
I’m all for criticizing Underwood on the things he deserves criticism for, but really not into manufacturing arguments that aren’t based in reality. Like saying he isn’t running an offense or giving any credit to really good defense being played against Trent in an instance where defenders generally have a lot of leeway. But yeah there’s always room for improvement.
Michigan was playing for their post season lives today at home and they ratcheted up the intensity there at the end. Gotta give them a little credit too.

Don’t disagree. It’s just that thecrossover step back 3 isn’t my ideal play in a critical situation unless I’ve got Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Step Curry, or some other comparable 1st ballot HOFer.
Trent made an awesome play. Ordinarily, I’d still rather try to get a layup or toss it into the best low-post player the program has ever had.

I already said that i was wrong about not using pick and roll yesterday. We actually did use that effectively. And ball distribution seemed to be better. Having said that, when the game got tight, we seemed to revert back to our one on one offense.
Newsflash: I occasionally say knee jerk things and talk out of my ass. I don’t think I’m the only one that does it here, though.
Inability to run a creative offense will probably be the death of this team (or our inability to defend taller guards), but I digress. It’s why I’m rooting for Curbelo to become the player in March we all hoped he’d be this year. We need more spontaneity to our offense.
