Iowa (-6) @ Maryland
Indiana @ Wisconsin (-8)
Illinois (-7)@ Northwestern
I still feel like this is Northwestern's put up or shut up game. They are in a near must win situation IMO. And after playing poorly the last 2 games, hard to see them lacking in effort tonight.
Can't start slow tonight. I feel like we need to get out to an early led. Too many times this season we are in a hole by the first media timeout.
-
Maryland already up 17-7 on Iowa. An Indiana win would boost our resume.
-
Iowa answers with a 37-9 run to finish the half
-
I feel like we should win this comfortably on paper but will probably be closer than it should be
-
Hoosiers at Wisco is 69 all in OT with 7 sec left.
This game could be in the 60's too.
Going to 2nd OT
-
We're just giving the ball away like they're late Christmas gifts
-
Down 9 need to.put Ayo back in
-
We're playing some really fucking dumb basketball tonight. I don't know how many poor lobs to Kofi have been taken away by NW. All of our guys look like they've never seen a zone before.
-
getting completely worked. No effort
-
Playing defense as well as the Capitol Police.
-
Tyler Underwood is in the game oh fuck we're toast.
-
This team right now looks as slow as a JizzJudy post.
-
That ls the last shot???
-
I dunno if he hits it...he still gets shouted down for launching from like 30 feet?
-
That was our worst half of the season. They took Ayos right hand away early.
-
Embarrassing effort from Frazier and Georgie.
Ayo invisible.
Kofi getting exposed on defense.
Three games worth of unbelievably dumb passes in one half.
-
The announcers said Underwood knew NW would whip out a zone against us. So how come we look clueless trying to run offense against it? We're just playing hot potato around the perimeter and throwing telegraphed lobs to Kofi that keep getting swatted away by NW hands.
Just really fucking idiotic basketball we're demonstrating tonight. We gotta do something against their zone.
-
Looking like Underwood put the "fight" back in the Fighting Illini at half time.
-
4th foul on Buie
-
Kofi playing like a grown ass fucking man
-
I just started watching a few minutes ago and good things start happening for the Illini. Better save my powers for Monday's game.
-
bit of a turn around.
-
Holy crap we came out of halftime playing real basketball.
-
Damoney Williams
-
Did Kofi actually slap the floor? That's awesome
-
greta 2nd half performance
-
This team showing some moxie
-
We're on a 45-11 run in the 2nd half.
-
Much better. GRANDISON ! Made about 4 plays in a row to jump start us this second half. Easily his best game of the season.
-
We're on a 45-11 run in the 2nd half.
53-13
-
You can all thank me. I missed the first half and when I started watching we got on fire.
-
53-13 advantage in the 2nd half. From 15 down at halftime to a 25 point win.
We made NW look like Chicago St, maybe worse. Easily our best half on defense.
Gotta hand it to Underwood. Whatever he did or said at halftime, the players responded in emphatic fashion. It was beautiful to watch unfold.
-
that was great, hopefully this energetic high motor kofi et al carries over for the rest of the year
amazing job by underwood
-
8% 2nd half shooting. Ouch.
-
8% 2nd half shooting. Ouch.
They shot a cool 2/23. Nice.

Rob with a floor slapping question!

We got out-worked the first half and were cold shooting the ball. We out worked them in the second half and made our perimeter shots. I think they were gassed in the 2nd half too.
Seriously, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a decent (bubble-ish) quality team get destroyed as badly as Northwestern got destroyed in the 2nd half tonight.
-
Underwood saying the players were more pissed off than he was at halftime. Said they knew that wasn't them at their finest. That is awesome to hear!
-
Rob with a floor slapping question!
It had to be asked.

Quoted from ESPN:
According to STATS, Illinois became the first team to outscore a major conference opponent by at least 40 points in a single half since Kentucky outscored Vanderbilt by 43 in the second half of a 106-44 win on March 5, 2003. The Illini are the only Division I team in the last 25 seasons to trail by at least 15 points at halftime and come back to win by 20 or more.
Insane.

you clearly haven't watched my college hoops 2k8 Illini dynasty put the beat down on everyone ;D
-
Bizarre game.
Having watched NU a few times, I thought this should be comfortable game. They are not good.
Not even Top 75 team.
We play down to our competition often. Glad they pulled it together.
Good to see Adam Miller hit some shots.
-
Watching the game now and your dum dum players keep doing the Sparty floor slap wrong. You ARE NOT supposed to get a stop immediately after slapping the floor! Tradition demands a blow by lay up!!!!! Get it right or pay the price Illini! >:( >:( >:(
-
I wasn’t worried even when we went into the half down 15.
-
Similarly, when Wisconsin was down 2 with 32 seconds remaining in regulation, I felt bad for Indiana.
-

😂
Man, I miss video games. I once coached Illinois to like 5 straight national championships before leaving to coach a mid-major to the national championship to cement my legacy as the greatest coach of all time.

BTW, you all inspired me to break out the NES and play some Super Mario 3 last night. That game is really hard after a bunch of beers. Especially when all the bullets and cannonballs start flying around. I should have played Tecmo Super Bowl, but the thought of drunk Mike Tomczak looking better than any Bears QB this century is kind of depressing.

yeah games these days are so frickin easy compared to 20 years ago
I do feel quite fortunate to have a still functioning PS3 so I can play the greatest college bball game ever made, definitely provided me quite a bit of enjoyment while everything was/is shut down

97/98 Illini did it first
But you guys haven't been doing it (poorly) for 20+ years.
-

Not a chance.
But this version of reality is consistent with your stated viewpoint/outlook, so that's cool.
-
The most famous proponent of the floor slap was runty, mid-1990s-era point guard (and now Marquette head coach) Steve Wojciechowski. But even a pest like Wojciechowski is perturbed by how modern Duke teams slap the floor. “That wasn’t the norm for all five guys to do it,” he told the Wall Street Journal. “That has to be orchestrated a little bit more.”
If this new brand of slapping irks Hill, Wojciechowski, or any other former players, so be it. This is Duke, after all. The more hate, the merrier.
“Always remember: Others may hate you, but those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.” Richard Nixon said this in a speech to White House staff after he resigned from the presidency. For him, being hated was an unavoidable fate. No matter how successful he became, he would always see himself as the aggrieved party. Nixon, of course, went to Duke. And had he played basketball, he definitely would have slapped the floor while in a zone defense.

After watching the 1989 Illinois @ IU special on BTN the other night I’m still miffed the Fab 5 get all the credit for the baggy shorts.

Yeah, these days, it’s “Game Over. You lost. Now go back to where you were literally 30 seconds ago with all of your equipment and a full life bar.” Kids these days couldn’t handle the shit I had to go through!

Given the weather do ya think they’ll be able to get down there? Seems a better excuse for ducking us than Michigan’s.
-
Brad said they changed plans/left this morning.
-
Ok I’ll try and reserve future questions until after I’ve watched the videos.
-
Rob, are you the only one posting these type of Illini videos on YouTube? At least in a timely manner?
-
I don't know how everybody uses their materials. I think the TV stations probably chop off little sound bites in the usual fashion. I assume the paywall sites load some portion behind their paywalls.
I use them to create radio pieces, too. And so do the wdws people, usually Scott these days and Steve Kelly in the past. The print/web journalists spend an hour transcribing/pulling their hair out.
-
Thanks that makes sense

About 10 years ago, some guy got credentialed for a season. I remember "312" in the name of the entity. I remember nothing else.
He started recording and uploading the postgame press conferences. It had never occurred to me before. He wasn't there the next year.
Then, when I had a camera that could record digital video (probably the little pink one Heather got for a birthday) I made a video called The Mike Davis Mechanism. I uploaded it to the Smile Politely YouTube channel, and put it in a story.
When I next signed on to that channel, there was a message that said "hey, why don't you monetize this video?" It had 6k views, mostly from the Scorat. So I created my own YouTube channel.
Things change every year in covering the team. Some things are closed off now. Some things are better. When I started, they handed out a schedule of media availabilities on Media Day. Nobody told me there was a weekly luncheon. The newspaper guys weren't eager for disruption from websites. Now we get an email the day in advance.
-
I expect another close game. Hopefully, no OT.
Illini 79, NW 73

Geez, that would be awful. Everybody around country bitches about not enough gameplay, and we then go fuck the dog when we have these easy games that would help us develop a bench, and also hopefully get Curbelo's head out of his ass. We need to beat these guys by 25. They are terrible.

I would think after that colossal goat-fuck in Nebraska they'd want to come out and beat these guys handily.
-
This has that 30 point romp type of feel to it. We need a game like that.

I'd love to see a 25 point ass whooping. But, I was looking at their recent results, which have included a lot of close losses.
-3 at Penn State
-8 Rutgers
-5 Purdue
-3 Indiana
(followed by -14 Rutgers)

Its really hard to say. Other than Rutgers- those other teams are garbage. Rutgers is an enigma. Would not surprise me to see them go one and done - or make EE.
NU only has 2 guys who would even be in our rotation.
We need to beat the fck out of them and start acting like a 1 seed.
-
I think we handle them and get Hawkins and Curbelo some good minutes in second half
-
I'll go with Illini 81- 63. Hopefully Curbelo plays better.
-
That's the kinda start I wanted to see. Non of this nebraska game crap
-
GORGIIIIIIIII
-
get kofi in
-
brad ridin em
-
get kofi in
Probably won't see him the rest of the half
-
We should be beating them by a shit ton more. Tried to get too cute with our passes and we paid for it.
-
Was hoping NW could keep it to around ten at half to make the 2nd more exciting. Let's put them away now.
-
I have the same confidence in the following scenarios:
-Ayo finishing at the rim in traffic
-Adam Miller getting torched on D after missing a rushed shot or turning it over
-
We let them hang around and now they are knocking down shots. Just great.
-
Well this game should demonstrate that big ten basketball isn’t a grind it out rock fight anymore.
-
Young’s save off himself was fucking awesome
-
These fuckers are getting the friendly bounces on the rim this half.
-
Yeah lots of breaks for them offsetting the first half
-
We suck right now, let's go guys
-
We have played straight up garbage basketball the last 2 games.
-
Damn Ayo.
-
Thank god for Ayo. Cold blooded assassin.
-
Geez. Not sure what to think. Zone offense is run poorly and takes Ayo out of the mix. Note to staff- you can still use ball screens against a zone.
Our TO's have been an issue all year, and are really allowing shit teams the chance to hang around.
Ayo has 16 TO's in last three games.
Curbleo has lost his fcking mind. 7 Assists/9 TOs in last 40 minutes in 3 games and his shot is totally messed up. He has his left hand on the ball on his release. Can't make FT's either.
We just squeaked by two of the worst P5 teams in the country.

Nicely said. Just one thought though, have you ever seen so many slop buckets for one team in one game?

LOL. They had some friendly bounces without question.

Keep in mind that Nebraska without Derrick Walker is different from Nebraska with Derrick Walker.

.We just squeaked by two of the worst P5 teams in the country.
I wouldn't go that far since we have no idea how the bottom of the B1G really compares to the bottom of the P12, ACC, etc., but damn this one should have been a blowout. Team is going to be difficult to watch in the tournament 1st 2 rounds.
-
The inconsistency has me troubled thinking ahead to the tournament. Can they flip a switch and stay focused against good teams? Can they shoot better than 50% FTs?
I will not be surprised by a first round flameout.
-
Has anyone else noticed AYO's off ball movement on offense?
-
I fell asleep at half, what happene din second half
-

Based upon KenPom the last two teams in the other other P5 conferences are about as bad. NU is better and under 100.
The rest are 100 or worse.
In tourney we will face a 14/15/16 seed and then a 6/7/8 seed.
So second round will be where we will see a Top 25-35 team.
-

They got hot from 3, one guy looked like an NBA guy hitting everything, their zone gave us some issues, we had TOs again, and we kind of fucked around until Ayo made two kind of unlikely shots at end.
The usual.

That pretty much sums it up. It was not confidence inspiring.

I could do without the clowning BS by Curbelo when he actually connects on a pass right now. Just play the fcking game and try and stay in front of somebody for once and quit throwing it away. He could be great player- but the dude cannot be trusted on the floor right now in close games. And his jump shot has turned to shit. Looks like a third grader pushing it with two hands. They have stopped guarding him. Giving him the Chester treatment.
-
They should never have been guarding Curbelo beyond 20’ to begin with. He just doesn’t have his jumper working yet.
If a team plays off Curbelo and gets physical with him, they can really limit him right now. He’s in a little bit of a rut, and I hope he breaks out of it, because we are going to have a hard time getting deep in the tournament without him playing well.

After starting out 3/8 from three he has missed his last 13 in a row since 12/15. Now is 3/21 or %14. They are backing way off him as you say and taking away his drive. He is forcing it too much as a result and also making a lot of poor decisions. We really do need him to get back on track. His form actually looked OK and his FT shooting was good. Its ugly right now.
-
I thought Curbelo was going to the NBA HOF? Or was that Miller?
-
Yes.
-
Yes.
Glad I got that right.

We were passing the ball around like a bunch of drunken fools. That had to be the worst passing we’ve done all year. We kept them in the game due to our idiocy. Wtf is Kofi of all people doing trying to throw outlet passes downcourt like he’s a point guard?
