Title: Andre Curbelo’s Freshman Season
Post by: Custard on January 03, 2021, 04:30:04 PM
Was curious how Curbelo stacks up statistically against the freshman seasons of the best UI lead guards since 2000.

Curbelo’s current average stats:

21 mpg 9.7 ppg 4.5 apg 3.5 rpg 2.5 TO 1.1 STL

Deron Williams’ freshman year:

27 mpg 6.3 ppg 4.5 apg 3 rpg 1.8 TOV 1.4 STL

Ayo freshman year:

32 mpg 13.8 ppg 3.3 apg 4.0 rpg 2.3 TOV 1.3 STL

DEMETRI!!!!

27 mpg 8.0 ppg 3.0 apg 2.9 rpg 2.5 TOV .5 STL

Frank Williams (Frank’s redshirt freshman season, was a partial qualifier)

30.4 mpg 11.4 ooh 4.1 apg 3.4 rpg 2.8 TOV 2.3 STL

Chester Frazier:

Look at Chester. Look at Dee. Look back at Chester.

I was so busy being young/taking the Illini being a respectful basketball program for granted/paying more attention to Dee Brown that it was the Cincy game in the tourney before I realized Deron was a star.

Not to take anything away from Curbelo, but let's wait to see how the 2nd half of the season shakes out when Big10 coaches have more of a scouting report to work off.

Partial dissent on this because of the scoring talent on that team not leaving much oxygen. 4.5 apg is darn good for a freshman particularly with Dee co-running point 30+ mpg. Deron looked like a well built potential pro PG if he developed a shot once our personnel shifted, which he did.

Your resolution for 2021 was to be the voice of reason? Let's see how long that lasts!

The right player at the wrong time.

If I said that, I was being unreasonable.

Curbelo is going to be one of the most fun players to watch in Illini history.

If he cuts down on dumb turnovers and develops a decent 3 point shot, he’s going to be All-B10 easy.

Deron and Dee both showed a lot of promise, but that was Brian Cook's team and the offense ran through him.
