Should be one of easier games in conf.
Illini by 9.
-
Boilers ate their pre-game meal at The Beef House, which is open for indoor dining.
-
Hawkins!
-
Hawkins showing something!
-
Hawkins giving us some nice energy off the bench. Must have had a good week in practice.
-
Great Curbelo drive. Went past everybody.
-
Perfect head fake.
-
Purdue's bigs can't do shit against Kofi.
-
kofi didnt get dunked on!
-
Miller needed that
-
Monte has transformed himself into a reliable outside threat. An offensive weapon if you will.
His year-to-year improvement has been remarkable to say the least.

If true that is just fucking idiotic. It *shouldn’t* impact us from an exposure perspective but could end up causing their team and others a bunch of headaches down the road if they have players that contract it as a result. I assume they had a private room and exposure to other guests was probably pretty limited but still is negligent behavior.
I’ve found most restaurants and bars in small towns in Illinois are still open. I ate in one the other night.

13-0 run by Purdue. Ouch.
-
Gross

Games are 40 minutes, guys. Not 20.

Maybe he did something not to Underwood's liking at halftime?

Speak of the devil! He buries a three
-
hit free throws
-
playing like crap
-
we got this
-
Ugly win.
-
9/22 from the line.
Lucky it was Purdue today.
-
We absorbed a 19-0 run.
Free throw shooting is still painful to watch.
Still, we found a way to gut it out despite not playing our best.
-
That game was hard on the eyeballs... oof

Purdue’s FT defense is #2 on KenPom
-
Ayo just seemed off today. Perhaps feeling under the weather? He didn't dominate the ball like he usually does in late game situations.
A good sign that we still won despite Ayo not being dominant (by his standards)
-
Good win considering how much went wrong for us today.
-
Hey Fartface, Painter said the team did NOT eat at The Beef House.
It was their radio guy (Rob Blackman) who told Brian Barnhart that they did.

Purdue is pretty nondescript at all aspects of the game.
Going to be a long season for them.

If we could just hit some damn free throws, we would have picked up a rather convincing win.

Yep, could have won much easier, but it was never really in doubt. We played like we knew we could turn it on when needed. We abused them last year.
You also never know after a week off. We couldn't hit shit early, then got it going before half and let the foot off the gas, then put them away.

I liked that Ayo seemed to know he was a bit off, and was content to distribute rather than trying to go hero ball.

The problem with playing like they can turn it on when they need to usually comes back to bite the teams that aren't good enough to do it at will.
See the Missou loss, the Rutgers loss.

The freshmen took another step and Kofi did too. I'll take it. Also nice to see DW getting boards again. I was wondering if he was dinged up a few games ago.
-
Was Grandison hurt? Didn’t even get in the game.

Curbelo is a small amount of discipline away from being one of the best PGs in the B1G next year. I don't think we've had a pure point who's looked this good at the 1 in a long time. Also nice to see Hawkins get positive contributions, and in the first half, too. With the run coming up, we really need Giorgi and I guess Hawkins playing more to rest Cockburn. With our depth, I worry about games like the away game at Nebraska, which we should dominate but not if we're gassed and looking ahead to OSU/MSU.

Kofi stayed out of foul trouble. That is a must for us.

DNPCD unless C was trying to keep something quiet.
-
He’d given us some good minutes the last couple games so it was def odd he didn’t even play. Hawkins did not play the last couple games then gave some good minutes last night. We played 8 deep without Grandison.
Underwood alluded to Hawkins having his best practice this week. Makes me think maybe coach wasn’t liking his practice habits or attitude and benched him a couple games to wake him up. Certainly seemed aggressive and motivated last night.
Whatever the issue I hope Grandison comes back and continues to play like he has shown he is capable of because that allows us to go 9 deep and really helps us in areas we are thin. Hutch is done for the year and anything we can get from BBV is just a bonus at this point.

Curbelo has a very unique skill set and feel for the game I am not sure we have seen here, but we haven't had many east coast guards here. Is clever and decent quickness with ball to get angles on almost anybody for a pass or shot when penetrating. It looked like he even kind of dunked on the breakaway. :o
Hawkins looked good.

I’m gonna go AOTC here and predict Curbelo has the best pro career of anyone on this roster and hope everyone remembers this post if I’m right and forgets this post if I’m wrong. If no one remembers don’t worry I’ll quote it to remind everyone.

I’m already AOTC on Curbelo. Barring injury he’ll be a NBA HOF player. Mark my words. I’ve already made this post quite awhile ago.
-
Like Kofi, he'll need to develop a jump shot.
-
He can shoot well enough where they do have to guard him already.
I am assuming he will improve that. Could be wrong, but his mechanics look solid.

Agreed

Kofi showed last year he can shoot from 10-15’ he’s just not asked to very often because he shoots 67% within 2’ of the basket. He improved dramatically on FTs last year to the point where I felt very confident when he went to the line. However this year he’s been awful and was 0-6 last night.
Not sure if his ability to make the occasional 10-15 foot guarded shot disappeared along with his ability to make unguarded 15 footers, but seems logical. I don’t see him ever being asked to shoot much outside the paint in his time at IL because he is so dominant in the post. Thus he won’t be able to display that ability to scouts but I’m sure he works on it whenever possible because he’ll need to show it at the combine.
I’m not worried about Curbelo’s shot whatsoever. He’s gotten pretty close to automatic with that turnaround step back fade away shot. He’s gotten better finishing at the rim. He makes FTs. Some of his three pointers haven’t even been close...he’s 3-12 for the season but we don’t really need him taking that shot unless someone leaves him wide open. Like LK said, he at least forces the other team to guard him on the perimeter which opens up his ability to penetrate.
