Mn was kind enough to island hop and meet us for lunch yesterday. Picked him up at the Maui airport with this sign:

How much pigeon do you know?
I went to Hawaii once a year for like 12 years for my job. I got pretty good at pigeon.

Interesting. You look very happy for being in the cesspool that is the 2nd most Democratic leaning state in the country.

My arm hair is blonde and doesn’t show up when I’m tan. I did tidy up the man sweater just a bit

We did attempt to find a bloomin’ Maui onion to share, but they don’t seem to exist in the same form the Outback ones do.

Fuck. I’m back to reality and staying in Valpo tonight for work. This place is somehow waaaaay more redneck than Tennessee. Fuck. They still smoke inside here. I should be in bed but I can’t stop people watching. I am from the greater Kankakee area, which is a renowned shithole, but man, this place takes the cake.

You from one of those “shithole counties” Trump was talking about?

Yeah. Was he wrong?
I was born at Riverside in Kankakee. The rural towns outside K3 aren’t so bad if you have a family business or a farm. Luckily my family had both, our family farm was made a centennial farm in 2019. But you also have to be ok with shit weather and unreasonable taxes.
I miss the food of NE (part of central) IL the most of anything. I get back 6-8 times a year and mostly wonder why I spent so much of my life there. Yeah, it was because of the farm and business, but it took me getting away to realize how much it actually sucks. I was bitter about some things when I agreed to sell out my share to my cousin after grandpa died, but turns out it was the best thing I never wanted to do.

It was a play on his comment about “shithole countries.”

I just assumed he made one about counties too. Seemed like something he’d say. It’s been a reallllllly long day so that’s kinda funny

There appear to be a few here who wished that you had "bought the farm!"

You know K3 is bad when my parents from Gardner and Coal City look down on it.
The food in NE IL? Seriously? I mean, it beats the Ozarks but wow, it’s pretty much BMC and fried fish on Friday

Yeah a few race riots and white flight almost killed the city itself. Parts of Bourbonnais and Bradley aren’t bad. There’s a reason Letterman gave the city the gazebo that sits in the cemetery by 57.
Lots of Chicago food influence seeps out into the exurbs.

If you want good Chicago style fast food in the Xurbs, you can find it. Pizza, pan or tavern style. Gyros. Vienna Beef hot dogs, polish, Italian Beef. Some good authentic Mexican places too. Local bbq pits. Food trucks, Mexican and Chicago style, are showing up.
Some people prefer a chain. Jersey Mike's, Portillo's, Culver's, Panera..

I love Mexican food, the more authentic the better. The best burritos I’ve ever eaten have come from the little taco shop in Onarga. Run by a husband and wife that barely speak English. Cash only. Very small menu except on Sundays when they host tour buses of Mexicans heading through the area on 57. I haven’t been there in several years now so some of that may have changed, but I have borderline erotic dreams about those pastor burritos.
I just looked them up on my google maps app to see if they’re still around, appears they are. They’re only rated 4.2 stars but nearly all the negative reviews I read were because the wait was too long, they didn’t accept card payment, didn’t speak enough English, or price was too high.
Sorry, but I feel a lot better buying a burrito off someone who barely speaks English, it’s a husband and wife and they get busy so sometimes you wait a bit, it’s not that hard to carry some cash, and $12 for a delicious 2+ lb burrito that makes 2-3 meals is pretty cheap to me. And they don’t put fucking French fries in them.
Visiting family the weekend of the 21st and will have to make a point to swing in there at some point.
