CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After a 3-0 start and a shutout win over Western Michigan last week, #9 Illinois starts Big Ten play on the road at #19 Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
Illinois (3-0) and Indiana (3-0) will meet in a ranked vs. ranked matchup for the second time in history and the first time since October 28, 1950, when #12 Illinois beat #19 Indiana, 20-0, in Champaign. [What an indictment of both franchises!]
NBC has the national television broadcast. The Busey Bank Illini Sports Network has the radio call with Scott Beatty (play-by-play), Carey Davis (analyst), and Michael Martin (reporter). [WHO IS DOING THE GAME FOR NBC?!]
Notes
Illinois in the Rankings
• Illinois is looking for its first road win as a top-10 team since Oct. 27, 1990 (21-3 vs. Wisconsin). [OY VEY!]
• Illinois entered the AP's top 10 on Sept. 7, the program's first top-10 ranking since December 2001.
• Illinois' #9 ranking is the program's highest September ranking since 1964, Dick Butkus' senior season. [That about sums it up right there]
• Illinois had its highest preseason ranking (#12) since 1990, when the Illini started #11 in the Preseason AP Top 25.
• Illinois' #12 preseason ranking is the ninth-highest in program history since the AP Preseason Poll began in 1950.
• Illinois was ranked in the Preseason AP Top 25 and the Preseason Coaches Poll for the first time since 2008.
Tough, Smart, Dependable
• Illinois is second in the nation in turnover margin (+6), behind only East Carolina (+7).
• Illinois has started the season with zero turnovers in its first three games for the first time since at least 1995. [The Dreaded FightingIllini.com Jinx right here!]
• Illinois has thrown only six interceptions over the last two seasons (2024-25), tied with Army, James Madison, Missouri, and Vanderbilt for the second-fewest in the nation over that span. Only Marshall (5) has thrown fewer interceptions than Illinois over the last two seasons. [D'OH! WEAR YOUR CUP SATURDAY, TEMPO!]
• Illinois is 10-0 when it has committed zero or one turnover over the last two seasons (2024-25).
• Illinois is 10-1 when it has forced one or more turnovers over the last two seasons (2024-25).
The Illinois Offense
• Illinois ranks 15th in the nation and seventh in the Big Ten in scoring at 45.0 points per game.
• QB Luke Altmyer is 14th in the nation and fifth in the Big Ten in passing efficiency (182.0).
• Altmyer is one of three Big Ten quarterbacks with 8+ passing touchdowns and zero interceptions, along with Indiana's Fernando Mendoza (9/0) and Nebraska's Dylan Raiola (8/0). [SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE!]
• Altmyer is 14th in the nation and second in the Big Ten in passing touchdowns (8).
• WR Hank Beatty is 16th in the nation and fourth in the Big Ten in receiving yards (289).
• Beatty is third in the nation and leads the Power-4 and Big Ten in all-purpose yards (466).
• Illinois has scored 38 or more points in six of its last seven games dating back to last season.
• Illinois has scored 38 or more points in each of its first three games of a season for the first time since 1999.
The Illinois Defense
• Illinois is fifth in the nation and third in the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing only 7.3 points per game.
• Illinois is tied for the national lead in fumble recoveries (5) and tied for third in the nation in forced fumbles (4).
• Illinois forced five turnovers at Duke, four fumble recoveries (3 forced) and one interception.
• Preseason All-American OLB Gabe Jacas leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth in the nation in sacks (6.5), while tying for the national lead in forced fumbles (2).
The Illinois Special Teams
• Hank Beatty ranks sixth in the nation in yards per punt return (25.3) and fourth in punt return yards (152).
• Beatty and Iowa's Kaden Wetjen are the only players in the nation with a receiving touchdown, rushing touchdown, and punt return touchdown this season.
• Keelan Crimmins averaged 48.0 yards per punt at Duke, including a 60-yard punt and a punt inside the 20-yard line that was muffed and set up Illinois' first touchdown.
The Illinois-Indiana Series
• Illinois holds a 46-25-3 lead in the all-time series vs. Indiana. [YEAH US!]
• The Illini are 13-16-0 against the Hoosiers in Bloomington. [BOOOO US!]
• The first meeting between the two squads dates back to 1899, when Indiana won 5-0 in Champaign.
• Illinois earned its first win of the series in 1901 with an 18-0 shutout in Indianapolis.
• The Illini's longest win streak of six came during the years of 1981-86.
• The most recent matchups was an overtime thriller where Illinois won 48-45 in Champaign, snapping Indiana's longest win streak in the series of four. John Paddock found Isaiah Williams for a game-winning 21-yard touchdown in overtime as Illinois took down Indiana. Paddock set Illinois' Gies Memorial Stadium passing record with 507 yards, with 200 passing yards going to Williams.
• Illinois fell 23-20 to Indiana in the Fighting Illini's last visit to Bloomington 9/2/2022. Following the loss, Illinois went on a six-game winning streak.
• Illinois and Indiana are tied 5-5 over the last 10 meetings. [BOOO!]
• The two teams all-time series records are different due to a discrepancy in the 1931 result: During the Great Depression, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Chicago agreed to meet for a "charity football bazaar" to be played at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field. It was a four-team tournament format with the winners of the first games moving on to play each other in a "title" game. Since a winner needed to be declared to play against the winner of the Iowa-Chicago game, it was decided that despite tying 0-0, Indiana would advance on the fact the Hoosiers had eight first downs and the Illini just four. Illinois counts the game as a tie, while Indiana counts the game as a win. [FUCKING HOOSIER BASTARDS!]
• Illinois' most receiving yards vs. IND: 224, Steve Hull, 11/9/2013
• Illinois' most rushing yards vs. IND: 214, Rashard Mendenhall, 9/22/2007
• Illinois' most passing yards vs. IND: 507, John Paddock, 11/11/2023
• Illinois' longest rush vs. IND: 83, John Karras, 10/27/1951
• Illinois' longest pass vs. IND: 77, Scheelhaase to Jenkins, 10/8/2011
• Last 100-yard receiving game vs. IND: Isaiah Williams (200) and Pat Bryant (131), 11/11/2023
• Last 100-yard rushing game vs. IND: Reggie Love, 140, 11/11/2023
• Last 300-yard passing game vs. IND: John Paddock, 507, 11/11/2023

LETS FUCKING GOOOO

With USC being the Big Noon game, this game has all the earmarks of a kick to the nads.

Have this unshakable feeling we lose this one, and it’s not real close.

You shut your whore mouth!

I won't be shocked if we get shellacked, but I just think we are a far more physical team and beat them up.

I saw that news before I posted, but I felt that way before I saw the news.

Indiana State may be Indiana State but it's not easy to get 33 first downs, 680 total yards, and average 10 yards a play.
The only time we've had that many yards was the game vs Normal in '44 that Ray went to.

I was originally supposed to head down Friday, but I’ll be heading out first thing in the morning.

The Daily Hoosier serving up the 11 point win and the red Kool Aid
PREDICTIONS
This one lives up to the hype early, as the teams trade punches and stay close in the first half. But the IU pass rush gets to Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer in the second half, the Hoosiers create turnovers, and the offense capitalizes to pull away.
TDH PREDICTION: INDIANA 38 ILLINOIS 27
ESPN SP+ (Computer): Indiana 28 Illinois 24 (60% win probability)
ESPN FPI (Computer): Indiana has a 62.8% chance to win.
-
Line is up to seven. Crazy
I bought my plane tickets for OSU game so will definitely lose today

The first halves have been the issue.... Not the second halves.

The first halves have been the issue.... Not the second halves.
I'm very well aware of that. Hopefully we've been sandbagging but we can't put ourselves into a 1st half hole.
The Trash Guy generally has us ready for business trips.
-
It looks like peacock for now?
-
Yep.
-
Why isn’t it playing?! Just keeps saying “Coverage will begin shortly.”

PU at ND had a weather delay. Bloomington may have one ?

The delays mean we get the end of that stinker instead of Illini

Puss playcall by Indiana on 3rd and long
-
Just great
-
Bad play calling from us too…
-
And a punt blocked. Lovely.
-
Put ND back on!
-
Now need 2d half adjustments for special teams
-
Just fucking terrible!
-
We suck again
-
There you go!
-
That's a great way to respond!
-
How liquored is Tempo at this game?
-
Great response!
-
They have to go for it here
-
Great tackling

More great tackling

Fucking stupid timeout!
-
Two special teams fuck ups have killed us already.
-
Fucking stupid timeout!
They were going to go for it anyway. Just should have left the D out there
-
They were going to go for it anyway. Just should have left the D out there
No they weren’t before the timeout. They were punting.
-
Omar can be good if he's consistent. I've seen enough of him being consistent,.
-
No they weren’t before the timeout. They were punting.
I'm not buying it. It was at the 50
-
Some protection for Altmeyer would be nice too
-
I guess we're a 2nd half team
-
Teams love to pick on Cox
-
I'm not buying it. It was at the 50
You can't win the game in the 1st qtr but you can lose it. They'll score points.
-
Of course their punter drops the ball and still pins us inside the 5.
-
Hold in end zone?
-
Kreutz to the Whitehair School of Centering
-
I'm not buying it. It was at the 50
They absolutely were. We screwed it up by giving them a timeout to think about it.
-
Well we totally have sucked so far…
-
Looking really disciplined that quarter!
-
He led with his shoulder!!!!
-
Xavier Scott playing in the 4th quarter up 31 - 0 looking really smart right now with Miles Scott getting booted
-
Total bullshit and as bad as it can get. Total homer call.
-
Number 0 covering no one there
-
That was absolutely targeting.
-
Number 0 covering no one there
How playing safety you let the WR get behind you there?!
-
Outplayed everywhere.
Scott got him with his helmet to the face mask before the elbow contact
-
About as bad a start as you can get…
-
Sure feels like a must score TD possession here.
-
OL is great!
-
Did Poles put this OL together too?
-
Jacas MIA so far.
-
Did Poles put this OL together too?
They're too quick for us.
-
Look great on national tv!
-
Number 0 should be playing for Illinois State
-
Would be nice if Lunney ran that play sometimes
-
Number 0 should be playing for Illinois State
He finally made a tackle
-
Mendoza gonna throw for 800 yards and we lose by 80. They’ll run it up.
-
Was fun while it lasted
-
Mendoza gonna throw for 800 yards and we lose by 80. They’ll run it up.
Would you settle for 49-14 ?
-
Would you settle for 49-14 ?
At this point yes…
-
The good news is that we are a 2nd half team.
The bad news is IU is a lot better than WMU and Duke. Their offense is not gonna stall in the 2nd half.
-
Mendoza gonna throw for 800 yards and we lose by 80. They’ll run it up.
We were told this was the Golden Era and were lucky to have Bielema
-
Jacas playing the role of Monty Sweat tonight
-
Maybe cover that guy?
-
At this point yes…
I wasn't planning on another 1st half score. How about 56-14 ?
-
Mendoza looking like prime Tom Brady
-
Well, let's see if our Illini have some sand or not
-
Take that hoosiers!
-
Feagin and Lil Valentine with 14 yards on 7 carries.
And Altmyer sacked 5 times.
The Cal transfer is 41 out of his last 47.
-
Looking like the Penn State and Oregon games last year (remember them?) where they were conpletely outclassed.
-
We were legitimately in the game at Penn State because they’re as vanilla and predictable as we are. They ragdolled our front line especially late but it was competitive. Oregon was much more like this game. Doesn’t help our best two defenders are out against a high powered passing attack. Thought the targeting and ejection for it were dubious at best. His shoulder pad hit his chest and the helmet to helmet was caused by the collision itself. Would it have been any less dangerous is he cuts him in half instead?
-
Yeah, they were in it score wise, but they were never in that game.
Jacas is supposed to be the top guy on defense. He is playing the role of Monty Sweat tonight
-

Quickness and speed

Yeah, not ideal

The RB didn’t even get touched…

Didn’t we cough it up at their 1 yard line and then later we were down 14-7 and driving in the 4th and had a miscue? It was a ballgame. This beating is on a different level and I just felt it coming for no reason, I don’t know shit about this IU team but I somehow knew we were going to get trounced. So glad I didn’t drive up for this abortion.
-
Very embarrassing to have to sit here and watch this is in front of 70,000 IU fans.
-
Yeah, not ideal
They lost by 10 to ND in the cfp. ND played in the natty.
I didn't wear a cup tonight.,
-
This looks like a really good juco program against a high school team.

Penn State dominated on the lines. But they were vanilla on O and allowed their DL to push our shit in. Cigretti doesn't care about showing stuff and is just going to run it up
-
Gies Memorial Stadiium is going to be a home stadium for tO$U.... People going to take the money and run after this
-
Most embarrassing loss
-
Most embarrassing loss
Hopefully you have been wearing your cup!
-
5 not even close to his guy. Teams love picking on him
-
20-22 for 256 yds with 5 tds
-
Indiana isn’t gonna stop scoring. This is beyond embarrassing. They’re gonna try to score as many as possible all game. This is gonna hurt.
-

They're going to play their game. Or we could try to stop them.
-
Don't know what they are going to do with 0, the Illini version of Terry Schmidt, being out
-
Bielema appearing to be quite the bum slayer.
-
Sorry this all my fault, i took the illini +7
-
Our chance to shine

Jacas is Monty Sweat

Golden Age of Golden Showers....
-
Might want to spend Gies' $100m on linemen and receivers and CBs.
-
Well, at least we have Bears-Cowboys tomorrow. More shit football.

When does hoops start?

There won't be any kick to the nads there!

I said to friends, somewhere around the half, that we might swap spots. These guys are saying we might not be that lucky.

Worried about usc

Not sure that’s going to be enough
-
Wasn't able to see game tonight but damn, fuck this.
-
Interesting to see the response next week. Do we come out pissed off and pummel USC? Or do we lay on the ground and continue to get run over on our way to a 3,4,5 win season?
History of this program tells us it's the latter. That's why the cup always stays on. The sad life of an Illini fan.
-
Worried about usc
Worried? Don’t be. They’re going to manhandle us, so just accept it now.
-
What’s crazy is they should have 14 more points if their CB’s could catch the ball. Two easy pick-6’s they dropped. This game is about as bad as you can get.
-
You know what
It's illinois st Fandom time

That's on you!

We not only get taken to the fucking shed but we leave Bloomington with more key starters getting hurt due to being kept in a game that was over in the first quarter.

Enjoy our Golden Era while it lasts.

Illinois has the worst line in the big ten even though they returned all the starters.

Makes one wonder exactly what they are spending the NIL money on. Not linemen or receivers.
-
Still ranked at #23. LMFAO. We shouldn’t even be in the top 50 after that debacle.

Yes, linemen and receivers…

6 1/2 point dogs vs USC.
-
If we lose Against Usc...oh boy
-
Doesn’t sound like we’ll have much for players in the secondary for this game so keep the cup on
-
I don't need a cup. Again.
-
That's the difference between teams like Ohio State and us. If OSU loses a guy, they plug another 4 or 5 star in. If we lose a guy (Scott for targeting, for example), we put in the chode from Spring Valley that should be a star at Illinois State, if he can win a starting job.
It's depth. Plus, Indiana was clicking and we couldn't get a break.
Oh well, fuck it. Saturday will be an absolute disaster, and we'll be back where we're used to. Fun while it lasted.
-
Hopefully we can get more talent with the infusion of cash. Bielema isn’t on the same playing field with money to work with. Indiana is an outlier and Cignetti won’t be there long. He’ll be at a blue blood or in the NFL by 2027 at the latest.
-
Cignetti will probably end up at Florida
