We’re gonna be top 10 this week, boys. I really like watching well coached, fundamental football where we just wear teams down with competence.
How about a toast to Mr. ECI himself, Guenther Lite? I think PAMan should lead!

Let's just hope you don't have your head out over your skis....

Define what that’d be? What Whitman has done so far at Illinois is remarkable.
-
The plane was about 8 feet from crashing into the control tower and he got it corrected. Probably more dumb luck than anything.
-
Let’s face it, any program hiring Brett Bielema 4 years ago was desperate.
-

I think it may have been about being top 10.
Clemson was #8 but they won't be tomorrow.
-

Illinois is pretty much always desperate when hiring a football coach. Bielema was the perfect fit though. He’s been nothing short of stellar in his time here, even if you want to call a 45-19 road win against a team that won 9 games last year in the ACC and supposedly got better in the offseason, luck.
-

Yeah I'm sure its just that easy
-
I agree, felt weird at the time but he was a good fit. I didn’t “like” him, but I thought it was a decent enough hire because he was an actual college football coach. Not a Lovie Smith Hail Mary or a MAC guy getting overpromoted.
-
Yeah I'm sure its just that easy
Wut. We were lucky a somewhat accomplished coach was there and desperate enough to take the job. It’s not like Whitman fixed shit day 1.

Why are you trying to diminish his success is the better question…
-
I’ve tried to make the point before but Lovie hire was actually pretty brilliant. Our options at that time were whatever was available in February when Whitman was hired, or running it back with Cubit and trying in the fall. We really needed to hire a minority in the next cycle for either football or basketball. Might as well take a flyer on the black NFL coach with state ties that’ll at least bring some credibility back to the program in the wake of the player abuse scandal.
Was he the guy for the long term? Hell no, but he did bring in some talent, made a bowl game, and left enough in the cupboard for Bielema to be competitive from day 1. We were able to leverage the buzz from the hire into program changing facilities upgrades through increased donations. Most importantly, it didn’t box us into having to choose from a narrow minority candidate pool with the prize pony of the DIA (basketball) when we inevitably fired Groce. Underwood has been a very good (bordering on great) hire and we almost certainly would have underperformed that hire had we been essentially forced to hire a minority.
-
Good post…
-
Why are you trying to diminish his success is the better question…
Obviously, not much to complain about right now, but both programs went through a lot of pain to get to where they are; and I do feel like he kind of fell ass backwards into Bielema but it’s worked great for everyone
-
Desperate program is fortunate to have hired a desperate man.

Pretty much. Kudos to Guenther Lite for taking the chance on a college coach who’d been out of college ball for 4 years.
-
Pretty much.
Pretty much I doubt it.

Pretty much I doubt it.
LOL. Ok, but facts are facts.
-
Fact: Illinois was a college football wasteland for a decade who had just failed on their previous “home run hire.”
Fact: Bret Bielema was a college football coach who hadn’t coached in college for several years and was not in high demand from reputable programs.
Argue with a wall if you want.
-
My favorite Guenther lite moment was the bald bros man hug with Groce when we "got" Jeremiah Tilmon.
That was fucking awesome

Agreed. That was epic.

I especially loved it when Bert dumb luck’d his way to a high profile New Year’s Eve bowl win against a hot SEC program.

One of my favorite things to come out of the 2024 Illini football season was the idea that when we build the Bert statue in front of Memorial Stadium that he needs to be doing this pose.

I’m not really sure that the fact Bielema wasn’t in high demand is somehow indicative that Whitman didn’t do a great job in hiring him.
Wisconsin used to have Bielema who did nothing but great things there. They fucked up and lost him and even though they got one of the hottest up-and-coming coaches a couple years ago, I’m not so sure they wouldn’t trade us straight up at this very moment to get him back.
College football is really bad at the whole “new is better” thing when it comes to coaches. Kudos to Whitman for not worrying about new is better or whatever the flashy coach of the month was at that time, but going out and hiring a guy that had already won (and won pretty big) in the Big Ten and then also got to spend a few years under Bill Belichick in the meantime.

Just weird how you somehow have to make a derogatory comment to undermine the success Whitman AND Bielema have had here…
Hot Take Tempo! Must be some complex you have or something…

And then spend most of his time blowing the completely incompetent Bears organization out the other side of his mouth.

His love of mediocre black QB's knows no bounds

Idk. I think backhanded compliments from Uber drivers are quite relevant.

I was good with the hire FTR. Didn’t kike him in a personal level, but at least he was a real college football coach with a record of some success in high level college football.
-
It was inevitable you guys would go there.

I remember being a bit underwhelmed, but then I quickly remembered that this is Illinois football.
The fact that he has us in the top 10 in the fucking country has me pretty excited. I don't even care about nut punches at this point. We're on house money lol
-
It was inevitable you guys would go there.
Nah. Just me. I have zero respect for you. Sorry. Can't help it.
-
You’re right, I should be licking Whitman’s nuts a little harder since he turned the football program around in only 8-9 years. Let’s hope our newfound glory days last longer than Zook’s.
-

i'm pretty optimistic, here, we've lost a LOT of Sunday level players while Bielema has been here, and it looks like the engine is still humming. Then again, in Zook's last year, we started 6-0 and ended 6-6
-
And mediocre black college basketball coaches
You could easily argue Shaka has had more success than Bret Bielema. I’m also the guy who loved mediocre white college basketball coaches too, as I badly wanted Archie Miller before IU hired him. But please continue…
-
A desperate AD took a shot on a washed out coach, and it’s paid off pretty well up to this point. It was said AD’s second shot on such a coach. If any of you have a problem with what I said, suck it. But that’s exactly what happened. Kudos to Whitman on making the hire
-
Never let it be said that Illini fans don’t do nouveau riche as well as anyone.

What are you so fucking mad about?

4 years ago we beat #7 PSU in 9 overtimes at PSU.
You took Bielema is trash comments about the OL out of context and spent the game bitching about him.
Meanwhile, he got his team to win in front of 100,000+ with 357 rushing yards.

I did take them out of context, and I finally admitted I overreacted. Yes, it took a while. And yet here you still
enthusiastically support child rapist Donald Trump.

Ahhh, almost overlooked your post. I was wondering where the Jew references came from, but a lot of random shit is thrown around here so I didn’t really think twice of it.
-
That’s one of the all-time typos in HQ history. I’ll bet I’ve got a few in the top 10.

Yeah I didn't understand that either lol. But hey. It's fucking Tempo.
Ok, Robb.

Better be careful going around using words like “kike.”

How would the CEOs of Uber and Lyft feel about you texting and driving?
Seriously, Tempo. Don't text and drive. It's fucking dangerous.

You might want to share that sentiment with Jobu, as well.

I know, it’s a terrible habit. I’m really good at it, though. I’m trying to quit.

JFC dude, it was a typo. The k is right next to the l.

“I did not kike him?” Isn’t an obvious typo.
-
How do you kike someone, anyway?

I know, it’s a terrible habit. I’m really good at it, though. I’m trying to quit.
You should. For real. I've actually seen some awful results of distracted driving. It's a big problem.
-

The first time I recall hearing the term was the middle to late 1980s . [1970s]Two Jews were talking about NYC. One liked it -- the food, the culture, etc. ... The other said there were too many kikes. I was an ignorant, naive young man who had grown up small Midwestern towns. I thought he meant there were too many lesbians.
-
A text can always wait.

You never saw Porky's then.
-
The first time I ever heard it was in a popular movie (I’m sure several will remember which). Porky’s? Although the guy was too stupid to know it was “kike” and not “kite.”
-
“Congratulations, you’re even too stupid to be a good bigot,” I believe was the line.
-
A text can always wait.
But yelling at PAMan often can’t.
-
I still think of that scene every time I hear the word.

i think the first time I saw that was mid to late 1980's on a rented VHS in a hotel room.

You got a hotel room to watch Porky's ?
-
Well, it was pretty risqué for the time
-
You got a hotel room to watch Porky's ?
Yes. I drove miles from home, stayed in a hotel, attended meetings, and made sales calls. But my main purpose was getting together with friends to drink beer, eat pizza, and watch rented movies.

Yeah probably.

Good.
How long have you been doing therapy for the shoulders ?
Did you have tears ?
You're the only one who knows how you feel. Are you making progress ?

I would still have to change the way I hold my phone and scroll.
The accuracy out of the gate is not very good. For example, I said trendy, it wrote trinity. Also has issues with my pet peeve -- homophones.
Thanks for the thoughts though.

The hard part with shoulder pain is diagnosis. The process is slow and they do one joint at a time. One consolation is all of nurse practitioners and nurses in orthopedics have been hot.
Men don't cry, not from physical pain. The pain level reached 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. Can't take NSAIDS, on blood thinners.
PT was too painful initially. Got a cortisone shot a couple months ago..Right now, two steps forward, one step back.
Add to that carpal tunnel. Next appt for that is in November.
-
Godspeed, Ray.
-
Feel better, Ray.

I don't know what you're going thru, but I went thru it all recently.
I tore my rotator cuff and didn't think much of it when it happened. NSAIDs were useless. The 1st person I saw suggested a steroid injection. With a tear, that's just putting a band-aid on your shoulder joint. I didn't get the shot and was given exercises to do at home. It wasn't getting much better and I saw an Orthopedic Surgeon.
We tried physical therapy, and I was religious about it, for about 3 months with no success. I then had the mri and it showed the tear. We scheduled surgery.
If you have a tear, what does the Ortho say ? Without knowing your particulars, if surgery is suggested I'd recommend it.
They showed me images during post-op followups and I got a laugh out of the 'your cartilage is pristine' comment. I tore the rotator cuff in my throwing arm.
Good luck.

Feel better, Nichi. Hopefully the meditation helps!

you have to talk to it like its an idiot, ironic for a "smart"phone I know
sounds like you're going to need a replacment or some kind of surgery, shoulders are tough I've had issues with mine in the past and it took forever to heal, best of luck!
