Title: coach hot seats
Post by: bringbackself on February 27, 2025, 08:40:50 AM
Woodson is gone

Fran, lot of talk of moving on or he will retire

Pikiell name has been mentioned since this year was a massive letdown but I don't see it

Hoiberg??? He ain't cutting it

I think Ben Johnson gets one more year

Jake Diebler? such a weird hire.

Woodson is gone - needed to happen, all parties knew this. This was a convenient "firing".

Fran, lot of talk of moving on or he will retire, He won't coach anywhere else, his "legacy" is too important to him (ego).

Pikiell name has been mentioned since this year was a massive letdown but I don't see it, He could move on with the stud recruiting class going to be gone...might be better opportunities out there.

Hoiberg??? He ain't cutting it, he is in Nebraska, huge hotbed for basketball....not, he is safe unless he wants something different and he has NO buyout so it will make any move easy, he is the most likely to jump to a better program imo.

I think Ben Johnson gets one more year, he has done just enough, problem is Garcia is gone after this year, he will be after next.

Jake Diebler? such a weird hire. Started strong, the school if firing without cause only owes him around 1.6 mil, easy to raise that amount from the deep pockets.

Re: Fran. What legacy?

Legacy meaning his place within that school, why go elsewhere and possibly diminish how he is thought of and what he has done there.

Word around here is Fran is retiring. He is a very good individual player offensive development and offensive system scheme coach. Has never had a team that played enough defense to really do much in tourney.
They can be entertaining and kids generally like playing there.
He can be a total stubborn redass rivaling Underwood.
Will be interesting to see who they go after.
They actually have a strong fanbase when decent as there is no pro team in area.
Have trouble recruiting African American players in all major sports (Football/Men's and Womens' BB).

When he first got here it was kind of a package deal with his wife who was a high D1 player at ND and then coach, and also a notorious hot head. Quite a family.

He’s never finished higher than 3rd in the conference and never coached past the round of 32, but sure.

Didn’t realize the tourney stat. That’s pretty damning, even at a school that has minimal tourney success since the 80s.

It's why you don't extend someone to seven years in year 2 of a contract after they're average the first year. They're probably stuck with him until April '26. Meanwhile, Andy Kennedy (former Huggins assistant at Cincy) has UAB winning regularly for like $1M/year. Lol.

Jai Lucas to Miami this weekend.

Duke is so strong this year it may not even effect them. Defensively they may suffer some in the tourney though.

Miami has a lot seniors on that team, (7).
Title: Re: coach hot seats

Some positions being filled up:

Lucas to Miami
Loucks to Fla State
Jensen to Utah

Nothing major with any of these yet...Lucas leaving Duke probably the biggest. But same recruiting grounds.

Well I certainly don’t pine almost exclusively for mediocre or unproven black coaches. Black players make up a large percentage of ball players, but if you think about it, there just aren’t very many good black head coaches in either football or basketball at any given time. I don’t know why. I do know the “let’s hire the black guy who is a good recruiter” pretty much never works out.

And I know your first thought is going to be “well it’s lack of opportunity.” Bullshit.

There have never been more black assistant coaches as there have been the last decade or two. Institutions actively want to hire good black head coaches.

I was very happy Whitman got us off the “never had a minority head coach” snide with Lovie than being forced to limit our basketball coaching candidate pool to minorities when Groce inevitably got canned. We could afford a do-over on football as it was already at rock bottom, but with basketball we needed to hire the best guy we feasibly could regardless of race before any more damage was done. Hiring Lovie first allowed us to do that.

Shaka - I was all in. Everyone was.

Romar - I literally called him an acceptable 4th or 5th option if our top choices fell through.

Reggie Theus - I once said “we could probably do worse (and I’d argue we did with Groce).”

Keatts - I definitely was high on him. I remember he was in my top 3 I wanted when he was a hot commodity (which IIRC coincided with when we needed a coach).

Yes, I was behind the idea of ending 100 years of never having a black coach in either major sport (Lovie eventually finally broke that embarrassing spot on our school history).

I think it’s ironic I’m constantly made fun of for the black coaches I praised but never get shit for having a huge hard on for Archie Miller (and his brother when he got fired from AZ). I wonder why no one here seems to remember the white coaches I gushed over. Hmmmmm…wonder why.

Everyone thought Archie was going to be a stud, and his brother was a stud prior to NIL when he was paying players and not everyone else was. Not really the same as Theus or Romar.

Again, I never suggested we HAD to hire a black coach. I thought it would be a big plus all other things being equal. But I badly wanted Archie. I never “wanted” Theus or Romar on any real level. They were break glass in case of emergency candidates IMO.

When Self left I wanted Matta. Was really underwhelmed with the clown shoes hire, didn’t think he would recruit well enough but reluctantly bought into the idea he could win with lower talent. Panned out like most expected.

When Marker Face was on his last legs, I wanted Shaka like everyone else. I didn’t hate the idea of Anthony Grant or Leonard Hamilton but clearly remember texting someone and saying if we hire this John Groce guy I might turn in my fan card.

When Groce was dispatched I was mad we didn’t get Archie, but Underwood had been on my radar, just figured he wasn’t going to jump to Champaign.  When we poached him from Okie State I was pumped.

Just saw the presser from Pearl 2.0, no way this guy succeeds. He read his resume, (that didn't take long), he fidgets NON STOP and he looks generally uneasy. He really needs to thank Papa Pearl for this one. I call this guy on the HOT SEAT day 1, and can't believe Auburn just handed him a 5 year contract $250,000 per year as the "ass coach" expected to go to 7 figures ASAP.

WOW, nepotism at its best. Again, no way this guy is successful, especially since he already has stated he will not be on the sideline displaying the actions that his father did.
