BTN with the quintuple header today. 8). The way the season has gone so far, it would not surprise me in the least if the Tournament eventually is cancelled, but Feast week has been a much needed boost for this year. Just happy to see these guys get a few games in this year. Like others, ready to see how this team fares against Duke and Baylor.
12 pm CT Illinois vs. Ohio

Ohio is just a bit better than A&T and Chicago St
-
Hope the Illini don't play any more guys with man buns.
-
Uh oh....

anyone gonna show up besides Ayo/?
-
need to put Williams on Preston.

About ready to ask the same thing. Nobody else wants to step up today.

Preston is lighting our asses up
-
Hopefully they learn from this one. Wow did Sideshow Bob light it up.
-
Ayo has some of that Michael Jordan killer instinct in him. He seems to love those clutch moments.
-
Thank god Ayo fucking Dosunmu came back for another year. That is all.
-
Damonte with a late clutch three. Member when we all would cringe when he took that shot? Now I got confidence in him.

A lot of MAC players (basketball & football) have the proverbial chip on their shoulder because they think they should have received an offer from a bigger school. Some of them -- Ron Harper comes to mind -- definitely were talented enough to excel in the B1G Ten/ACC/Big East.
Preston is really impressive. 8 assists and 0 turnovers, in addition to 31 points. He knows how to work to get his shot against any defender.
-
ChicagoFan not showing up yet, apparently.

4 1/2 years later, but I'll take it!

Better late than never!

Man that was a great game. Ohio brought their A game. Preston is either damn good or got a shitload of lucky breaks. They move the ball really well and appeared well coached. Will be interesting to see how they fare the rest of the season.
-
We out rebounded them by 20. We had 16 turnovers, they had 7. We had 3 steals, they had 10.
They played well.
3-0, and Baylor next.
-
Nice win to have Ayo be clutch after we were on the ropes. It's Ohio, but we're playing on no rest so hard to make anything of it. I think fatigue clearly got to Curbelo and Miller.
Would've been nice to see Trent/Giorgi, or even someone like Grandison step up and score more in a game like this with low rest. We'll need those guys if Ayo or Kofi get into foul trouble.
-
Better late than never!
Fuck yeah. I know he's been ragged on over the years (and rightly so in some cases), but it's hard not to root for the kid. Nice to see him have some success coming off the latter part of last year.
-
Ohio put on a clinic in terms of half court offense execution. Preston and the bun head white kid had their way with us.
Might have been tired legs, but our defense was not good. Hope staff works on defending high ball screen.
Glad we won and we have a lot of weapons but need a lot of work before Baylor and fcking Duke.
-
Ohio was impressive. They played really tough D and they were great at exploiting mismatches offensively. I could see them being a tournament team.
I didn’t like our defensive rotations today, we need to clean that up ASAP. Having 2 freshmen and a new addition in Grandison probably contributed to that, but it’s no excuse.

The Bobcats played 3 games in 3 days also.
Preston averaged 34 minutes a game.

Exactly. People make it sound like the Illini were the only team on the court that was playing 3 games in 3 days.
-
I'm glad Ohio U gave the Illini a really tough game. Better Illinois faces adversity now and learns how to play through it. The first 2 games against the Washington Generals didn't offer much of a test.

It's a condition that never gets replicated aside from the conference tournament. Illinois at 60% beating Ohio at 60% by 1 doesn't tell us much.

No, but the inability to adjust to what they were doing is concerning.

It’s always hard to know if it is one of those weird matchup things or an incredible personal performance or just a clunker of a game for a good team.
My feeling from watching the game wasn’t that I was watching a mid major playing lights out against a good team having a bad night. If I ignored that their jerseys said Ohio it looked to me like two good teams in a slug fest with some elite college level players making play after play.
As I had mentioned earlier I have been concerned about a really dynamic guard being able to beat us off the dribble and score/dish. I was thinking of the normal 5’8” guy who normally does it against us but this time it was a long PG who seems to be a pretty high level talent more in the mode of Ayo.
We know Illinois and the guys who guarded him are damned good defenders. There didn’t appear to be any issue with effort or intensity on the part of the Illini. Think it was just a really good performance from Ohio, particularly Preston and the Man Bun guy. Guess we’ll find out if it was a one off performance or they’re actually pretty good. But still fairly sure Illinois isn’t overrated. It was nice to close to tough game like that without Feliz.
-
Preston was just a nightmare matchup for us, especially given the tired legs. He was just too big for Frazier. Maybe on fresh legs, Ayo guards him, but I think Brad wanted to conserve Ayo’s energy. DMW is really who should have been guarding Preston, but that would mean sitting Miller.
I think they should have tried Trent-Ayo-DMW-Grandison-Kofi more, that would have given us the best defensive matchups.
-
I don't understand the 3 games in 3 days excuse either. That was the same case for Ohio too, and they had to travel for their 2nd game. They simply kicked it into another gear against us.
I'll tip my cap to Preston. I thought Ayo did a decent job when on him, but he hit some tough shots over him and the help defense of Kofi. Even his final shot was pretty good defense by us, but like the rest of the game whatever he threw up was no doubt going in. Kid looks like a legit NBA prospect in my eyes.
Ohio has all the makings of that 13/14 seed no one wants to see come tourney time if they win the MAC, as long as Preston is beasting it up for them night in, night out. I'd love to see how they do the rest of the way.

Pretty awesome to see the Illini back to national relevance. Figures it would be 2020, basically bizarro sports season. Is there a general discussion thread? Didn’t see one.
