CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 20 Illinois travels to the Pacific Time Zone for a Big Ten game for the first time in program history, taking on No. 1 Oregon on Saturday away from home. The Fighting Illini will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS for the second consecutive week.
The Orange and Blue recorded their third ranked win of the season following a 21-7 victory over No. 24 Michigan in Week 8. The Illini defense tallied three takeaways, including two fumble recoveries in the second quarter that resulted in 10 points, while holding the Wolverines to their lowest scoring output in over a decade. Playing their Rededication Game in front of a sold-out Memorial Stadium, the Illini picked up their first ranked-vs.-ranked home win since 1991.
Oregon rose to the top spot in the AP poll after securing a 35-0 road victory over Purdue on Friday, Oct. 18. The top-ranked Ducks are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play thus far this season, and they have won 12 consecutive home games heading into this weekend's top-20 showdown.
Illinois will make its second-ever trip to Autzen Stadium in Eugene, with the lone appearance coming back in 1995. This will be the fourth meeting in the all-time series between the Fighting Illini and the Ducks; Oregon holds the slight edge, 2-1.
The Illini, who are off to a 6-1 start for the second time in Bret Bielema's four seasons at Illinois, will face the #1 team in the nation for the 16th time in program history and the first time since the 2007 win at #1 Ohio State. The Fighting Illini are 3-12 against #1-ranked teams with wins in 1950 (Ohio State), 1956 (Michigan State), and 2007 (at Ohio State).
Brad Nessler (play-by-play), Gary Danielson (analyst), and Jenny Dell (sideline) have the call on CBS. The Busey Bank Illini Sports Network has the statewide radio broadcast, with Brian Barnhart (play-by-play), Kevin Mitchell (analyst), and Michael Martin (sideline) on the call.
*Illinois will visit Eugene for the second time in program history and the first time since 1995.
*Illinois will travel west of the Rocky Mountains for the first time since the 2019 Redbox Bowl in Santa Clara, California. *Saturday will be Illinois' first regular season game out west since a nonconference trip to Washington in 2014.
*Illinois is 6-1 with three AP Top 25 wins for the third time in program history (1983, 1990, 2024).
*Illinois is 6-1 for the second time in Bret Bielema's four seasons at Illinois (2022, 2024).
*The 6-1 start is tied for the best start by an Illinois team through seven games since starting 6-0-1 in 1953. {What about 1983?}
*Illinois and #7 Tennessee are the only teams in the nation with three AP Top 25 wins this season.
*Illinois is 3-1 against AP Top 25 teams this season. From the 2008 Rose Bowl game through the 2023 season, Illinois went 3-40 against AP Top 25 teams. {AWESOME!}
*Illinois has three AP Top 25 wins in a single season for the first time since 2007. Only one team in Illinois history has more ranked wins than this year's Illini squad: the 1946 team that went 4-0 against AP Top 25 teams.
*Illinois has been ranked for six consecutive weeks. The six AP Poll appearances are the Illini's most since the 2007 team was also ranked for six weeks.
*Illinois will face #1 for the first time since the 2007 win at #1 Ohio State that helped the Illini reach the Rose Bowl.
*Illinois will face the #1 team in the nation for the 16th time in program history. The Fighting Illini are 3-12 against #1-ranked teams with wins in 1950 (Ohio State), 1956 (Michigan State), and 2007 (at Ohio State).
Illinois is 1-5 all-time on the road against #1. *The Illini have traveled to the #1 team twice in the last 55 years.
*Illinois' last six meetings against #1 teams have all been against Ohio State. The Illini will face a #1 team other than Ohio State for the first time since hosting #1 USC in 1972.
*Bret Bielema has improved to 24-20 during his Illinois career. Since Robert Zuppke went undefeated in two of his first three seasons at Illinois from 1913-15, Bielema's 24-20 start is the third-best through 44 games by an Illini head coach, behind only Mike White (1980-83) and John Mackovic (1988-91). {The '80s still belong to the Illini! 1880s, 1980s, 2080s}
*Bielema is 5-6 (.455) against ranked teams (AP/Coaches/CFP) as Illinois' head coach. His .455 winning percentage against ranked teams is the second-best in Illinois history, behind only John Mackovic (8-8, .500, 1988-91).
*Bielema's five ranked wins (AP/Coaches/CFP) during his first four seasons are tied for the second-most in program history, behind only John Mackovic (8, 1988-91) and tied with Mike White (5, 1980-83).
*Bielema has had the Illini ranked in 11 polls during his first four seasons in Champaign. Only John Mackovic (39 weeks, 1988-91), Mike White (14 weeks, 1980-83), and Pete Elliott (13 weeks, 1960-63) have had the Illini ranked more during their first four seasons as Illinois head coaches.
*Illinois has sold out Memorial Stadium twice in a single season for the first time since 2009 (vs. #19 Kansas, vs. #24 Michigan). The Illini have two wins in front of sell out crowds at Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2008.
*Saturday is the fourth meeting between Illinois and Oregon.
*The Fighting Illini and Ducks first met Sept. 19, 1970, a 20-16 Illinois win at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
*The Ducks also visited Champaign Sept. 25, 1993, coming away with a 13-7 victory over the host Illini.
*The last meeting in the series, Sept. 9, 1995, was Illinois' only visit to Eugene, Oregon. The Illini led 31-20 after three quarters but fell 34-31 to the 24th-ranked Ducks, who completed the fourth quarter comeback at Autzen Stadium.
GAMBLING! VSiN has all the sites still at Illini +21.5 (some with differing vigs). O/U still at 54.5. ML started Illini +966, now at 950, 980 and 1k depending on where you go!
Bet the mortgage and the 529 plan money on Oregon!

I think the 1983 team started 6-1, lost to Missouri
-
Oregon is very good but 21 points seems like a lot, i dunno teams have been struggling traveling out west so it honestly wouldn't surprise me to see oregon cover easily
-
I’ll be thrilled if we even have a pulse in the middle of the 4th quarter.
-
If you told me I could have:
Oregon 27 Illinois 17 Illinois ball at their own 40 with 9 minutes to go, I’d sign up for that right fuckin’ now.
-
Last week was such an emotional win that I think we'll likely get blown out here. Autzen is as tough a place to play as any. Prepare for the worst and take whatever we can get.
-

I would as well.
-
It’ll be way more than a thrashing. I don’t see how the defense has a prayer at stopping Oregon’s offense. We might score a bit on Oregon’s D.
-

2011 was definitely 6-1 and I’m sure the 2001 team was as well.
-
I think this season is much like 2007 upsetting Ohio State. I think Illinois beats Oregon this weekend…
-
Lol
-
If we were at home, I’d entertain the idea of not getting blown out.

I’ll be AOTC on this and say we pull it out…

That Purdue 2nd half did a lot to quell my urge to daydream.

I did not. Switched from Cable to streaming last week and still trying to figure things out. Finally located the game and for some reason the Wi-Fi connection was bad. Is Michigan actually that good? If Purdue can do what they did to us, I’m scared of what might happen at Oregon.

Michigan is not good.
-
Kind of what I thought.
-
Penn State might be pretty good and we gave them 4 quarters of competitive football in white out energy at their place
-
But to be clear I think Oregon will score at will on us
-

Did Tempo hack your account?

Michigan is a much worse match up for us than Purdue and their game plan was pretty trash not running the ball enough
That Purdue game was quite an anomaly, I'm in the camp of "shit happens"
Not expecting to beat Oregon like Judy is but I think its either going to be close or a total blowout lol (tempoing)

Tempo needs to have his kid set up his TV streaming accounts for him.

that's what she said

That was some six sigma wtf - Purdue scores on a fumble recovery, they get an onsides kick, all sorts of weird shit happened.
Yes, we should have completely shut it down but Purdue had some really wacko luck.
Oregon got to have some really good game tape on that QB. I'm not as optimistic as that 2007 Ohio State game because we don't have Rashard Mendenhall, but we've got a reasonable QB and 2 solid WRs and a serviceable TE, and the D has shown some moxie. Will need a perfect game but this isn't Illinois-UConn hoops

You saying that Oregon will not go on a 30-0 run?
-
I was at the 2007 Ohio State game in Columbus. Not many Illini fans there that day. Lucas Johnson high-fived me in line for the bathroom at halftime.
-
Was going to go out and “own the town” after the game, but it took us over an hour to 5 blocks in traffic after the game. We drove all night with no sleep and tailgated. Ran out of steam. Went straight to the hotel and passed out by 7:00. I must have watched a light change 8 times before going a block. Was literally falling asleep in traffic.
-
I watched it with a Purdue fan in a bar in Louisville that was full of Ohio St fans. Good times. Don’t remember exactly what I did afterwards but I am sure I got drunk while doing it.

Illinois is good. Why isn’t that enough for some fans?

I just hate Boilermakers and Buckeyes. I thought this was bipartisan, but I guess you and Custard are just bandwagon Illini fans.

Cup installs ready?

Let’s fucking go!!!
-
What a stupid defensive call
-
Rushing only 3 guys at Gabriel is not a winning strategy
-
Oh cool a missed facemask call so now a 3 and out on our first drive
-
Blatantly a face mask
-
Massacre incoming
-
Massacre incoming
Yeah i mean we haven't had much of a shot so far, not surprising really
-
Wtf was that, Altmeyer? Only guy there was an Oregon DB
-
Perfect throw. To the DB.
-
Yikes…
-
Well at least i dont have to waste all afternoon watching this one lol
-
That's a make up for the missed facemask
-
That's a make up for the missed facemask
Yep!
-
Did Altmeyer take Oregon and give the points?
-
I know saying “this play is a must make” first play of 2nd quarter, but they need to get off the field.
-
And they give up 15 on 3rd and 17. Smh
-
This is over.
-
Give up 16 yards on a screen pass on 3rd and 17 smh.
-
Oh well. We all saw this coming after the Purdue 2nd half. And the defense benefitted heavily from Jack Tuttle being the opposing QB last week.
At least we don't have to worry about making the playoff. It was always a pipe dream anyway.
-
Posing like a badass after clearly not catching a ball down 18
-
Oh well. We all saw this coming after the Purdue 2nd half.
I was told that didn’t matter.

Meh oregon is pretty heavily favored to win out. Wish the game was 2000 miles away in champaign but its not
-
About all I was hoping for was to not get embarrassed. CBS should switch to another game.
-
Illini basketball is (kinda) back tomorrow. So..there's that.
-
Ok, can’t watch any more of this. Going to enjoy my Saturday.
-
Looking like Bielema thinks it is all gravy once 6 games were won like the stupid fuck who wrote the article. This is embarrassing. Illinois going to have a tough time with the rest of the games. Metrics are awful.
-
Training staff is busy today.
-
We are who I thought we were. But this team probably finishes 8-4 or even 9-3. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
-
This has not gone well
-
Rome wasn’t built in a day.
It only took thousands of years.
-
When we couldn’t get them off the field on 3rd and 17 it was over. First play of 2nd quarter.
-
Can we get a backdoor cover to make it look respectable to the box score people?
-
We are who I thought we were. But this team probably finishes 8-4 or even 9-3. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
+1
-
7-5 will be lucky. 6-6 probable. Biekema's teams seem to falter the back end of the schedule.
-
We won the 2nd half!
-
7-5 will be lucky. 6-6 probable. Biekema's teams seem to falter the back end of the schedule.
Except for 2021 when they finished strong after a 1-4 start and almost went bowling. Last year the early-mid stretch really was the undoing of the season. Faltered in 2022 for sure.
-
Playoffs?!

almost went bowling
Almost.
They almost went bowling last year too. Except they sucked ass in a must win game against a Northwestern team beset by scandal. Judge Judy was there.
-
“almost went bowling!” Is an instant classic.
-
😳 is this a serious post or just looking for engagement?
You sat there last year and saw what happened against Northwestern. The metrics for this team are not good at all. We have seen this movie before: At some point it catches up.
-
TheDramaQueenMan
This team is actually a top 40ish team. It has not been good offensively, especially against the 2 competent teams it has played.
-
“almost went bowling!” Is an instant classic.
Very true. They almost won 6 games that year!
-
😳 is this a serious post or just looking for engagement?
Well, takes one to know one...
-
This team is actually a top 40ish team. It has not been good offensively, especially against the 2 competent teams it has played.
By competent you mean the #1 and #3 team in the country?
-
i would be very surprised if we only won one of our next 4 games
-
By competent you mean the #1 and #3 team in the country?
Specifically. They looked like complete shit offensively in those games instead of "not good" like most of the other games. 4 years in and the OL still sucks.
-
Love the Illini Fan Mindset that it is acceptable to get your shit pushed in by Top 5 teams in football and basketball. Ridiculous.
-
Play like shit against the good teams gets Illinois and Minnesota relegated to an 11am start on FS1 for their game next Sat.
-

Have to agree with PATheyHeSheThem here.

Send money to ICON if you actually want to get over the hump
How is Indiana Football's NIL? Granted, that guy won't be able to bring in half of his James.Madison team next year.
-
I don’t see any shame in our only losses being to the #1 and #3 teams in the country. Finish out the year strong (10-2 preferably but would be ok with 9-3) and I’m happy. It’s just another step in the right direction of building the program.
-

90% of teams get their shit pushed in by Top 5 teams

I call bullshit.
-
I call bullshit.
This is a bad take
-
I have to side with PATheyHeSheThem here. Idaho (4th in Big Sky) played Oregon to 10 this year. Unranked Kentucky lost by 1 to Georgia. Most teams will get their shit pushed in by top 5 teams, but 90% is a bit high.
-
Unranked Miss St played Georgia to 10. Vandy beat Bama and barely lost to Texas. Nebraska played OSU to 4. 4-4 USC took Penn State to OT.
