CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 23 Illinois will return to Memorial Stadium for the first time in four weeks on Saturday, when Purdue makes the short trip to Champaign. The Fighting Illini and Boilermakers will battle for the Cannon, with kickoff slated for 2:30 p.m. CT on FS1.
The Orange and Blue (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) will play their first conference home game of the year after opening their Big Ten slate with back-to-back away contests against ranked opposition. Illinois began its two-game road swing with a 31-24 overtime win at then-No. 22 Nebraska on Sept. 20 before suffering their first loss of the year in Week 5 at then-No. 9 Penn State.
The Illini boast an unblemished 3-0 home record thus far this season, which includes a shutout win against Eastern Illinois, a 23-17 victory over then-No. 19 Kansas, and a Homecoming triumph versus Central Michigan.
Purdue (1-4, 0-2 Big Ten) arrives in Champaign on a four-game skid, most recently falling on the road to Wisconsin, 52-6, on Saturday. The Boilermakers have won each of their last four meetings with the Illini; Illinois will look to power past Purdue at Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2010.
As part of the team's season-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium, Illinois will wear its Four Stars helmets on Saturday. Famously worn during Dick Butkus' years at Illinois, the Fighting Illini wore versions of the four-star helmets from 1962-68. Players' numbers were featured under the four stars, and the helmet donned a gray facemask with white-blue-white center stripes.
Eric Collins (play-by-play) and Spencer Tillman (analyst) have the call on FS1. The Busey Bank Illini Sports Network has the statewide radio broadcast, with Brian Barnhart (play-by-play), Kevin Mitchell (analyst), and Michael Martin (sideline) on the call.
Air Raid Siren: New for 2024, an Illini celebrity will sound the Illini air raid siren right before kickoff to get the crowd pumped up for the Fighting Illini football team. University of Illinois alumni Sean Evans, who hosts the popular YouTube show Hot Ones, will sound the siren before kickoff against Purdue.
Bielema is officially the modern era's tallest Illini football head coaching midget in some time:
Bret Bielema has improved to 22-20 during his Illinois career. Since Robert Zuppke went undefeated in two of his first three seasons at Illinois from 1913-15, Bielema's 22-20 start is the third-best through 42 games by an Illini head coach, behind only Mike White (1980-83) and John Mackovic (1988-91).
Bielema tied the program record for road ranked wins (AP/Coaches/CFP) during his first four seasons. He is the second coach in Illinois history to win three ranked games on the road during his first three seasons, joining Lou Tepper (1992-96).
Bielema is the first Illini coach to earn Top 25 rankings in two of his first four seasons since Ron Zook led the Illini into the top-25 rankings in 2007 and 2008, his Years 3 and 4 in Champaign, respectively. Illinois reached as high as #14 and were ranked for five consecutive weeks in October and November 2022 under Bielema.
Illinois has sucked against Purdue:
Purdue leads the traditional trophy series, 42-30-2 (since 1943), while the overall series is 48-45-6 in Purdue's favor.
Last season in West Lafayette, the Illini fell 44-19 despite 202 yards and a touchdown connection to Pat Bryant by Luke Altmyer. Josh McCray rushed for a touchdown and Kaden Feagin ran for a then-career-high 85 yards.
In the last matchup in Champaign in 2022, Illinois dropped a 31-24 decision in a game that proved to be the difference in the Boilermakers earning a trip to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game. The game was tied 21-21 going into the fourth quarter before Purdue scored 10 fourth-quarter points. Chase Brown rushed for 98 yards, snapping his 100-yard game streak at 10 straight.
Illinois rushed for a season-high 242 yards in 2019 when they won 24-6 on a rain-soaked field at Ross-Ade Stadium, the Illini's last win in the series. It was the second game of what ended up being a four-game winning streak that propelled Illinois to bowl eligibility in 2019.
In Illinois' last home win in the series came in 2010. Nathan Scheelhaase rushed for 118 yards and threw for 195 and four touchdowns to lead Illinois to the 44-10 victory. Scheelhaase was 16-for-20 passing with touchdowns to A.J. Jenkins, Mikel Leshoure, Darius Millines and Chris James.
GAMBLING! Illini -19.5 per VSiN (seems odd since Purdue has won 7 in a row in Champaign despite being just as sucky as Illinois). O/U 49.5 (seems high!) ML: Illini -1111 to -1400! Started -1363! Purdue started +760 and is now +700-+800.
Go Illini.
-
We havent beat Purdue at home since 2010? 💀
Also, Eric Collins with the call, yuck
-
It’s supposed to be Tempo, Illinois and Purdue. Custard is for Bears games.

Made you look.
-
Got him.

Made you look.

-
Made you look.
It is my thread. Of course I am going to look.
I washed my hands of Bear game threads since you ignored them. You are in charge of Bear game threads.
-
let's beat these bozos
-
This needs to be a win.
-
Now let's bury these bums
-
If we choke this away, I might help PAMan pack Bielema's bags.
-
Good god
-
Just fucking ugly…
-
Aaron Henry's defense making this Purdue bum backup QB look like a fucking Heisman candidate.
-

Just blown coverages by the players. Think DBs were getting too cocky not thinking they were gonna throw and got burned. Don’t think it’s bad play design.
-
Bleeding stopped...for now. Altmeyer said enough of this shit.
-
Nut punch approaching
-
Ok ok I take it back. Henry what the fuck are you doing?! Our defense is nonexistent.
-
WTF
-
If we lose this, I think you demote Henry. This game is so typical Illinois…
-
This should've been a blowout and we're sweating. Defense needs big work seeing Michigan off a bye.
-
Yeah, crazy this is coming off a bye week with two weeks to prepare. This second half is just unacceptable.
-
That MF should have been thrown out for targeting. WTF.
-
Typical Illinois…
-
We came out after halftime all cocky and it cost us. Now let’s just hope not the game.
-
Embarrassing and especially it being Purdue and cocky ass Ryan Walters!
-
Not even prepared for the onside kick. Unacceptable coaching failure on every level even if we win.
-
Oh my goodness we don't deserve to win this at this point.
-
This is fucking ridiculous!!! 😡 😡 😡
-
Fire Henry. Right now. He's fucking dead to me.
-
So lucky to have a clown like Bielema! So I've read here
-
Absolute collapse and inexcusable. Someone should resign or be fired over this.
-
40 points allowed in one half to the conference bottomfeeder who just fired their offensive coordinator and was starting a backup QB. And we were coming off a bye week on top of that. A bowl game I'd have to say is in serious doubt.
-
Things like this are why I stopped emotionally investing in Illinois football. Giving up 40 second half points at home to a bad football team is pretty close to an all-time low.
-
Lucky to be in OT.
-
If the stupid dumbfuck kicks the XP the game is over. Bielema is an idiot
But we are lucky to have him!
-
Fucking ridiculous. The XP/2 pt call and we win. QB doesn't gift them 6 from like the 5 yard line and we win. DBs show up in the second half and we win.

Eberlose = Bielema
-
I'm not even excited that we just scored lol. The defense will likely give it up just as quickly.
-
Purdue will go for two if they score and win. You watch! So Illinois. Cup on!
-
Yep they’re calling the TO to go for two…
-

2 plays, super predictable. Oregon is going to hang 60 on us.
-
Jesus Tittyfucking Christ
-

Good call
-
The one time we finally knocked that dude on his ass.
Still not cause for celebration. 100% feels like a loss and it should have been after gagging away a 27-3 lead at home to the worst team in the conference.
-
Good call
Would be crazy not to go for it as they hadn’t proved they could stop anything in the 2nd half. Ultimate nothing to lose call.
-
Came here to say “we had it all the way”
-
On the bright side, we’d have lost this game in the past! Extend Bielema!
-
Never in doubt
-
On the bright side, we’d have lost this game in the past! Extend Bielema!
Also our ranking stays pristine as USC actually finished off the choke job vs Penn state
Playoffs? PLAYOFFS???
-
Broke the at home Purdue jinx.
-
Broke the at home Purdue jinx.
Barely.
-
Well, a win is a win I guess, but that was shameful and embarrassing. Broke the skid to Purdue. Sitting at 5-1, I’ll take it.
-
We won a rivalry game and should drop out of the rankings entirely. Should get into a bowl still but 8-4 looks a lot less likely than it did at halftime.
-
The PBP announcer was a fucking disgrace. Clearly riding Purdue's dick all game long. You could tell he really wanted us to miss the FG at the end of regulation.
-
I think this needs to be taken into account as well though…

-
That'll teach me to turn the game off with 40 seconds left
-
Ryan Walters was the OC for the Boilers. No joke. And he kicked Henry's ass up and down the field today.
-
Just finished watching the game... ho le fuk

Maybe they needed to send the house on the previous 25 defensive plays
-
Maybe they needed to send the house on the previous 25 defensive plays
I definitely would’ve called more blitzes…
-
Seriously what did we just witness…
-
Snapped a four-game losing streak against PU
beat PU at Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2010.
The 50 points are the most ever scored against them.

It is Purdue.....everyone else ran all over the Purdue defense.....
-
Would be crazy not to go for it as they hadn’t proved they could stop anything in the 2nd half. Ultimate nothing to lose call.
Except for the losing the game part.
-
Except for the losing the game part.
They’re 1-4. With some really bad losses. They’re basically playing exhibition games.

I doubt the head coach should agree with that sentiment.

Would be sweet to beat michigan

Beat them, and that matchup with Oregon will be huge! Win that we’re looking playoffs.
-
Beat them, and that matchup with Oregon will be huge! Win that we’re looking playoffs.
This is the thing with freaky sock puppet Republicans. They will say things that, while literally true - if the Illini beat Oregon we are a playoff possibility - have no basis in any meaningful reality.
The correct statement for Judy would be...
"Beat them, and that matchup with Oregon will be huge! Unlike the very small cup I will have to wear during that game!"
-
Would be sweet to beat michigan
Pretty much a pipe dream but an at-large playoff berth would be incredible.
-
And I'm the delusional one....
-
And I'm the delusional one....
More realistic than relying on a weak schedule to get a flawed team to the Super Bowl. And again, I said it was basically a pipe dream. It’s not a prediction or anything close to that.
-
More realistic....
Sure it is....
-
playoff berth
Oh, does the Big 18 have playoffs now?
