Alright, I’m humoring ThePAMan with the Eberfloser thread title, but:
I personally have shown this coaching staff a lot of patience. I felt it was unfair to judge a new head coach with a roster that was practically bad by design. I think Eberflus is good at some things. He can definitely coach defense. I think his culture seems pretty good. His players seem to like him, which matters IMO. But is he demanding enough? We heard about hard practices year 1, but seems like maybe it’s gotten a little too country club. I’m not there, so I don’t know for sure, but to allow Nate Davis to barely practice yet play seems to indicate a potential problem.
The in-game coaching (horrific challenges, the 2 point timeout was atrocious). The game planning…Is Flus giving Waldron adequate direction? Sure, Waldron should be primarily responsible, but if things aren’t working Flus needs to step in and give some direction. Not sure we’ve seen that.
I want to blame a lot of the line/offensive struggles on Waldron (and do), but at the same time, I’ve watched a lot the All22s and too often guys are getting overpowered or miss on their blocks altogether.
If Flus doesn’t get this turned around right quick I don’t see how he survives this, nor should he. If they reel off 4 out of 5 fine, but this coaching staff is taking on water, and I wouldn’t bet on them to bail themselves out.
In the end, that might be ideal.
I think Poles has done a great job. Has he been perfect? No. But expecting a GM to completely rebuild a team in two years isn’t very realistic. He’s made some mistakes to be sure (Claypool, Nate Davis, Velus, and Tyler Scott). He’s apparently misjudged the quality of his OLine, but I think he’s the best GM we’ve had since Finks, hands down. I have a lot of confidence that Poles (unlike Pace) will fix his mistakes.
-
All GMs make mistakes. How do you do at fixing them? That’s the key to being a good GM.
-
Hard to argue with any of that. I am please with the defense. But the offense has underperformed. Hopefully they can turn it around, but I really don't like this offensive line. That's where, in my opinion, a lot of the problems lie. Good players make coaches look good.
-
The coaching needs to be better. For sure.
-
His culture seems pretty good to you, but then you mention the country club preseason camps... Hmmmm.
-
Shit, thought i put this in the football forum. Lol. A little help, Custard?
-
His culture seems pretty good to you, but then you mention the country club preseason camps... Hmmmm.
Meaning I think the comraderie between coaches and players is good. Culture is more than just hard practices.
-
I also acknowledged that I’m not there, so i can’t knowledgeably comment on practice habits. I can only surmise from afar. We heard alot about hard practices early in the regime, not so much the last two years.
-
I wonder if the strength coach is doing his job well, because the Oline is getting overpowered too often.
-

Tempo might be right. We don’t know what goes on in camp. Maybe the S&C coaches are doing bad getting them ready. Surely possible.
-

Maybe. These guys aren’t looking strong, for sure. Guys need people to drive them.
-
Nitpicking Ryan Poles:
As everyone here knows, I’ve generally applauded the job he has done. There having been a few glaring errors (again every GM has them). Let’s look at his biggest ones (IMO).
1) Chase Claypool trade. Hated it, but understood why he did it. But why would we trade for a known knucklehead? Granted, no one knew it would be the 1st pick of the 2nd round. Could have probably grabbed a nice Center with that pick.
2) Velus Jones. Hated the pick from the get-go. I only have one rule, and that rule is if you’re in college for 6 years and only have one good year, you’re likely not good at football. Duped by the size/athleticism.
3) Nate Davis. Easily the biggest FA bust. Apparently people in Tenn already knew he wasn’t much of a practice guy. Between Davis and Claypool it makes me wonder how well we’re doing our homework on players.
4) Tyler Scott. Wasn’t he a breakout star in camp? He’s literally invisible right now. I’m not sure he’s been on the field (and he’s been leapfrogged by Deandre Carter). How good would Puka Nucua or a usable guard look with that pick?
5) Doug Kramer. It’s not like we invested much draft capital in him, we didn’t. But how bad is he if he’s been here for 3 years now and can’t sniff the field with our Center situation? Why is he here a 3rd year if there’s not faith he can play? This one baffles me.
6) This should probably be higher, but it is what it is: Eberflus. The guy does just enough to justify keeping him (although you probably shouldn’t). Can really coach a defense. Check. Team morale and unity seems good. Check. After that…I allowed him some grace period because he was a first time HC working with one hand tied behind his back (literally oversaw the gutting of a roster). But 2 point timeouts and multiple bad challenges per game shouldn’t be happening. Also not sure he makes TEAM adjustments quickly enough. Really bothered me when I saw him allow Waldron to continue running Swift from the shotgun and letting Caleb air it out in a game plan that screamed for a downhill run game. I viewed last week as a major barometer in Flus’ development and was thoroughly disappointed with what I saw.
Again, overall I’m a fan of Poles despite the fact he jettisoned my guy (which I’ve conceded was probably the right move long-term). Although I think Justin and a handful of picks might have worked out nicely, too.
-
LOL on Eberlose. He fucking sucks ass Tempo. He's done zilch to justify being a HC or keeping his job. Your guy Fields even agrees that he blows. That's bad analysis on your part.
Good points on Kramer, though.
-
Eberflus has strengths and weaknesses. And IMO deserved some time on the job to prove his competence (or lack thereof). If they had fired him last year, I’d have had zero problem with it. Unless they hired an Eberflus clone. If Flus misses the playoffs this year, he needs to be jettisoned because this should be a good year to add a competent offensive head coach to pair up with Caleb.

Another wasted year ..Another year of learning for Williams. Should have never hired him in the first place
-
I cannot comprehend what you have seen in Eberlose, Tempo.
He is Marc Trestman, except on defense.
-
Very reasonable argument. Who should they have hired? Daboll was probably the hot offensive guy that year. He’s hanging by a thread in NY. He’s one of the favorites to be fired first.
-

No, he’s not that bad. He’s closer to Lovie Smith. Who also couldn’t figure out the offensive side of the ball, and how to do challenges correctly.
-
My issue with keeping Eberlose is that if you fire him, you HAVE TO fired the rest of the staff, even after one year, which fucks Williams’ development and having to learn a whole new system. No legit HC candidate is coming here and accepting assistants that he doesn’t get to pick. Should’ve wiped the slate clean last year coaching-wise. Shake my head.
-
If they fire Flus, everyone else is gone. Period.
-
I can’t imagine any scenario in which they try to saddle a new HC with Waldron or Morgan.
-
If they fire Flus, everyone else is gone. Period.
Exactly. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be either. My point is that should’ve happened last year with all of them. Not you have a catch 22 that’s gonna fuck with Williams’ development in learning a new system.
-
Interesting that it fucks Williams’ development, but Fields was expected to overcome it (a year 2 coaching change).
-
It would have made a lot of sense to fire Eberflus last year. Maybe not totally fair to him, but oh well. Why didn’t Slowik get a job? Not sure why Ben Johnson didn’t either. Waiting for the perfect opening? Asked for too much money?
-

I think Williams will prosper regardless. Fields didn’t.

I’ll take Ben Johnson. Need an offensive HC in my opinion.

Williams is going to have a lot more to work with (as well as much more support).

I lean Slowik at this time.

Again, he’s not Trestman. Flus lost 14 games year one (worst roster in the league), and suffered a franchise record 14 game losing streak and never lost the lockerroom. There’s something to be said for that. Trestman lost the lockerroom the minute things went south. I think Flus is very much like Lovie. Competent, but limited head coach. They mirror each other quite a bit.
-

The talent for Caleb will be significantly better than it was for Fields, and there’s a zero percent chance they give Caleb a first time coordinator to groom him. He will get a desirable offensive head coach. If he doesn’t, fire Poles.

Let me know when he gets a better line and TEs who don't mind blocking....

LOL. Eberlose never lost the locker room except for Fields' whining. Probably because they know Eberlose is running a country club.
Eberlose is much like Lovie...How ridiculous. You have a concussion or something?

Tempo is the guy asking why the results are not better while claiming the personnel is better this year. Yet, he refuses to accept that Eberlose and Poles have messed this up.
So, let's look at the facts:
*Fields and Getsy are both gone.
*As we know, Williams has far less time to throw than Fields did on average last year.
*Nonetheless, Williams still just threw for the 11th highest amount of yards in a game in Bear history.
*Nonetheless, Williams' pass numbers on non-blitzing plays has been pretty good.
*The RBs' production is far worse than last year.
Doesn't that leave Getsy as the reason for the lack of running production (UNLESS you want to acknowledge that Poles and Eberlose have fucked this up)?
Tempo, you cannot have it both ways as much as you try.
-

It’s mostly the same dudes. With “upgrades.”
-
Me trying to have it “both ways” in this conversation is the most safe-awareness lacking comment I’ve ever read in this forum.
The guy who made the talentless Bears a great running team, is dead last with the Raiders (by a mile) because he doesn’t have any talent. You can’t make these arguments up. They can only come from ThePAMan.
-
Was listening to AM1000 yesterday and (Waddle or Silvy I think it was) was saying that some fairly well known football coach or maybe GM (I wasn’t listening closely until this caught my ear) claimed that Geno’s best play and turnaround was more attributable to Dave Canales (QBs coach in Seattle) than Shane Waldron. Sounded believable, as Geno was ok, but not as good after Canales left.
-
Canales also resurrected Baker last year.
-

Those are scare quotes.
So tell us what the problem is then.
-
Lay down noted, Tempo. You have no answers, claim there were upgrades , and refuse to blame Poles and blame Eberlose for annually running a country club preseason camp. There is no helping you when you being willfully ignorant.
-
LMAO

Says the guy who gives all the credit for the talentless Bears being a top 2 run team the last two years yet presides over by far the worst run offense in the NFL this year.
-
Talk about “no answers.” I can certainly come up with something better than “Luke Getsy left.”

Not “We lost Luke Getsy.”

Not “We lost Luke Getsy.”
So you can’t answer it?
-
So you can’t answer it?
Oline not on the same page, not playing together? New Coach doesn’t understand personnel (Swift is not a load back). Oline hampered by lack of reps together in camp? Justin Fields helped take pressure off the RBs? All better theories than “we miss Luke Getsy.”
-
Also, I think Waldron’s offense more closely resembles KC’s (misdirection/pass first) than SF (run first).
-

Speaking of not on the same page, Chris Morgan was the only offensive coach retained from last year. Maybe he and Waldron are not on the same page?
-

Yet, you haven't to date
Is it Getsy left or Poles and Eberlose suck?

Those are all questions. And talk about LMAO with Fields taking the pressure off. You are delusional

Basically sounds like you are claiming this is all another Poles and Everlose fuck up. Got it.

SunTime article on the OL said they are doing same stuff as last year.

Delusional is giving the man with the worst run game in the NFL (by far) the credit for the Bears having a top 2 run game the previous two years. That’s premium level delusional.

Uh he was the OC. They erre able to block and rush the ball and now they can't. It sure as hell was due to suck ass Fields.

Again…I’m not trying to say I was the captain of the Fire Flus Brigade. I’m merely pointing out that I wasn’t at all married to the guy. You often miss the forest for the trees.
