I visited a friend that I grew up with in Pontiac prison. Long story short, he had some fucked up shit going on with his girlfriend and she somehow ended up dead. Turns out he killed her in a most vile way. Went up for 1st degree murder. If the death penalty were still a thing when he did it, he would have probably went down for it. He's in for life without parole.
Pontiac is old, like Stateville. It's one of those places that when you show up, it's like wow, this is legit shitty. When you pull up in the parking lot, you hear the noise from the inmates. It's just obviously a terrible place to be, and you feel terrible as you walk up.
Then, the officers basically search you and treat you like you're one of the inmates. No matter how much you try to cooperate, they still treat you like shit, for whatever reason.
Then, you move in and go to the visiting room, and wait. Eventually they bring out your guy, and he looks awful. Not that I feel sorry for him because he's the one that got himself in here, but it's still hard to not feel bad for him. He really cherishes our time together, and actually enjoys every second. Then, the guards come and say all done, time to go. Then, the light goes out of his eyes, and he gets up to go back.
It's really sad. It's just super shitty. But again, that's what happens. He will die in there, unless they move him for some reason. But he will probably die there, alone. He spends most of his time in a cell by himself. It shows that he lacks socialization, because when he saw me he was super jittery, and he just acted super weird. Not like the guy I knew.
Life hits real hard. I actually cried for him when I drove away. He deserves what he's getting, but it's hard to not remember what it was like before.
I haven't been back to see him in a few years. I am thinking about going back to see him, but I'm not sure. It's hard, and so much has happened since then. It sucks, but he's been pretty much left behind.

My first adult job was driving a bread truck. I ordered and delivered the bread for Statesville. Well, I always ordered it, but didn’t typically deliver it. But on slower days I’d deliver. Had to have my truck inspected before I went in. Inmates would grab the bread as I pushed down the rails. They were always asking if I had raisin bread on the truck. That shit was like gold to them. I remember telling one guy, “Nah, but I’ve got some rye.”

So, one more thing about Pontiac. When my kids were little, we would take the Amtrak from Pontiac to the city for the day. You could get a round trip ticket for like 11 bucks, and it would take you right into Union Station.
Well, one time, we were on the tracks waiting to leave, and right before they took off, a car pulled up fast, and let out 3 guys. All in matching gray sweatsuits, with shoeboxes. Right before they got on the train, the guy that drove them there gave them each some cash. So, we saw these dudes getting released from prison, and getting shipped back on the Amtrak to Chicago.
They came into our car, and they just sat quietly, and talked amongst themselves. When we got to Union station, they got off the train, and were absolutely baffled. They just were looking up at everything, and they honestly did not know what to do. I actually asked one of them if they needed some help, and they just said they're trying to figure out how to get home.
I took them outside and showed them where the bus stop was. Said, hopefully you can figure it out from here. I was taken aback by how these guys were from Chicago, but they could absolutely not navigate Union Station, or figure out how to get home.

I visited Pontiac too. I went on tours to both with my college psychology class/professor. Both it and Statesville were extremely intimidating and scary. Very dingy places and couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life there.
