Guess I gotta keep making these threads!
We're favored by 7.5!
Lets keep it going!
-
Only 7.5 and Clary not playing. ???
-
Think they’re getting a little bump for playing in a better environment than BJC
-
We’re coming off a grueling emotional road win, playing in a small gym against a scrappy opponent. All the makings of a loss.
I think we pull away for a 15 point win though
-
A source tells me that tPSU had been seeing diminishing contributions from Clary and, yes, he/she/they is happy they're playing in Rec Hall where they play better.
-
Not an ideal start to the game…
-
Zero defensive effort.
-
Such a illini game to lose
-
Penn St comes out on fire. Only against us.
-
Starting to settle in. Don’t let them hang around too long.
-
PSU shooting 71% lol
-
PSU shooting 71% lol
The new Golden State Nitty Lions 😂
-
My our defense can be terrible when it wants to be. This is Penn State and they booted their best player off the team.
-
Solid run to end the half but we cannot be giving up 40 in a half to PSU.
-

Uhhhhhh, that would be Ace.
-
I’m not thrilled with giving up 41 points in a half to a PSU team that scored 49 total against Nebraska. The good news is that PSU decided to match our defensive effort, or lack thereof.
-

Defense has got to improve, the guys gonna get a new one ripped over the inbounds baskets givin up, and the shot to get us to 48, BU should install that more often. Hawk into the lane, TSJ on the wing, defense has to gravitate to him and push to Goode for the 3. Good set and great pass by CoHawk.

Those back door layups are disgusting. Funny things happen when players move and pick on offense.
Play defense dammit.
-
We stopped playing team d games ago.
-
Goode a huge liability on defense.
-
Shannon missing FTs. Fuck.
-
Hawkins playing like hot garbage tonight. Five turnovers.
-
Hawkins playing like hot garbage tonight. Five turnovers.
Plus a 3 from Pittsburg that missed
-
We are hard on the eyes tonight.
-
We're up 23 on the boards to make up for the 15 turnovers.
-
TSJ.
-
We could have run clock. Goode has other ideas
-
This should not be this close.
-
Just stupid fucking basketball.
-
I think they will win it. But it wouldn't surprise me if they blow it either.
-
Bad turnovers, no D.
-
How about drawing up an inbounds play, Coach?
-
BRB, going to go put my cup on…
-
Sure looked like he traveled.
-
Hawkins travelled lol
-
And got mauled.
-
Choke job.
-
What the fuck are we doing?!?!?!?!?!
-
Underachiever Special.
-
What the fuck are we doing?!?!?!?!?!
Blowing a game against a shit team?
-
Holy shit
-
What the absolute fuck
-
This is why we can't have nice things.
-
Definitely a blow for the all important B1G Championship quest....
-
Season ender.
-
Well I haven't cursed at the TV that bad in a loooooong time
Fuck
-
You give up 90 points to Penn Fucking St, you deserve to lose.
You blow a 12 point lead to Penn Fucking St with 5 minutes left, you deserve to lose.
Unfuckingreal.
-
I was told here that Free Shots don't matter....
-
Garbage against the pressure, 1 primary ball handler for most of the game, passive defense with I don't know, about 30 layups. This team is so up and down it is ridiculous.
TSJ thank you, the rest well...piss off, get pissed off, or this season will be a waste of some serious talent coming back and coming in via transfer.
No excuse for this game, the coaching was horrendous, the players showed nothing to start the game to stay in contention with Purdue....NO WAY this team wins more than 1 in March and maybe not that either...no consistancy when it matters!!
-
Definitely a blow for the all important B1G Championship quest....
Absolutely bull shit. This sucks. Outscored 20-7 down the stretch. Shit coaching.
-
Final four team my ass. The team we saw tonight wouldn’t win a single game in the NIT
-
Saw better defense played in the NBA All-Star Game.
-
7 point lead with 40 seconds left. All we had to was not do the one thing we wound up doing. Pissing down our legs.
-
4 straight loses to Penn st lol
Not even Groce did that
-
Saw better defense played in the NBA All-Star Game.
Well played and well accurate.
-
4 straight loses to Penn st lol
Not even Groce did that
That's just Gross
-
Man, I thought this team would struggle on offense, but be really good on defense.
Also, have never expected this team to get to the 2nd week of the tournament this year. Underwood needs at least 3 All Americans to do that.
-
PSU has a history of scoring 90 this year. They beat Rider with 90.
Lol
We're so fukkin good we can outscore anybody, especially when TSJ has a career game.
Lol
-
Squeaky must be thrilled.
-
7 point lead with 40 seconds left. All we had to was not do the one thing we wound up doing. Pissing down our legs.
Could have made some free shots, inbounded the ball, and not fouled on that 3 point shot.
-
On the bright side, it looks like the Illini are already in peak March Madness form.
-
I'm unfollowing this team on the SnapGram.
-
This Illinois team can not be trusted.
-
This Illinois team can not be trusted.
They can be trusted to blow games to crap teams...
-
Who's Underwood going to blame for this one ?
-
Who's Underwood going to blame for this one ?
Could start with making your best free-throw shooter inbound the ball for some bizarre reason
-
That was fun.
-
For such a veteran team and experienced players, they sure fucked up in crunch time way too much already this season. Let’s hope we got that out of us here and it doesn’t happen in the tourney.
-
That possession where Goode went for a quick dagger 3 was unacceptable. Underwood should had the team eat clock. That right there was the first critical mistake in giving up the game. I was beyond pissed.
90 fucking points to Penn State without their best player. Way to go Underwood. Love your defensive strategy. So elite
-
Who's Underwood going to blame for this one ?
We have to be thankful he's here because Weber and Groce were idiots.
-
Looks like I picked a good night to skip watching this team. Underwhelm.
-
How many points will Iowa score Saturday?
-
Wonder if Hawkins was still wearing the Terps t-shirt....
-
Wonder if Hawkins was still wearing the Terps t-shirt....
The look on his face when he went to the line to ice the game was a I'll miss both look.
-
Rec Hall seats 6500 and there were some empty seats.
Bryce Jordan seats 18K and fills up for wrestling.
-

The refs iced him and it worked.

If that's the case, he's as mentally weak as Fields.

Goode has zero value outside of knocking down wide open threes. He can’t play defense and apparently has no BB IQ either. He is what he is at this point.
-
If that's the case, he's as mentally weak as Fields.
I think we’ve known that for a bit now. He was ready for the ball and asking for it and they kept fucking around and it pissed him off so he stepped away and got even more frustrated
-
This is underwoods worst defensive team he has ever had in the 7 years here with illinois. Thats how bad we are now Per kenpom. And that was with a top 10 rating after 10 games already this sesson which has now crashed harder than any other teams in the country in that same time frame.
On the bright side we are firmly off the 4/5 seed line. We'll be lucky to split our remaining games.
-
33min-9pts-5rebs-3/18-shooting/2 missed "ice" free throws and a foul for them to win it....great game CoHawk...Fugg this guy is infuriating
-
I think we’ve known that for a bit now. He was ready for the ball and asking for it and they kept fucking around and it pissed him off so he stepped away and got even more frustrated
Maybe this will cause him to tone down the social media. Would think he's hearing it there right now.
-
When everyone said they wanted off the 4/5 line I think they were hoping for a 3 seed
-
With the way the Win Expectancy graph went for that game, Underachiever told Eberlose, "Hold my beer."
-
Last 8 big ten games going back to @NW 91-96 loss.
Illinois defense averaging 80.4 ppg given up.
-
All this with shannon playing out of his mind. His defensivr intensity has been there, but everyone else..... crickets.
Hawkins can shut the fuck up. And fucking play. Lets go back over the whole season and count how many times hes bitching to the refs about his weak ass not being to take contact on a lay up all the while his man takes it down the floor for an and 1. All the while bitching to the ref about the red scratch on his arm. Dude is too frail for the NBA. And mentally not there yet.
-
The look on his face when he went to the line to ice the game was a I'll miss both look.
And those bleeping zebras allowed PS to have guys switch sides of the lane just as the ref was getting ready to toss the ball to Hawkins on both free throws.
Underwood needs to wake up. Shit defense where they can't stop drives to the lane, back door cuts. Defense 101.
And too many damned times Domask gets doubled up in the backcourt, gets trapped, looses control, etc. Absolutely sucks.
-
Last 8 big ten games going back to @NW 91-96 loss.
Illinois defense averaging 80.4 ppg given up.
Not good. Makes you vulnerable even with our good offense when you let teams hang around. We have become like the high octane Iowa teams with Garza and Murray. Can’t stop the ball. Very basic shit.
-
Last 8 big ten games going back to @NW 91-96 loss.

That's on the staff.
We were pretty good on defense earlier in the year. We gave up on that idea tho. And that's on the staff and it's not something that you turn around at this point in the season.
-
How many points will Iowa score Saturday?
Over 100 easily the way this team can't play defense.
-
I'm seeing Loyalty putting all the blame on Zach Hamer (who I didn't even know was on staff until recently) because he's the defensive coordinator. How about we blame the guy who assigned him the role and won't take it away from him?
-

Last game I said he was safely off my shit list. I'm gonna have to rethink that.

Good question, Miles.
-
Hawkins should come off the bench next game after the under four min timeout going into half. See how he responds and adjust his second half time accordingly. BU needs to do something.
-
What about that one play where Coleman was complaining to the refs and didn’t run back and let us play 4 on 5 and they got an easy bucket? Shit like that infuriates me more than anything.
-

He should practice his Free Shots this week!
-
I still can’t believe we lost that fucking game. Even when we went down one I wasn’t worried. Had that much confidence we’d win, not sure why though.
-
How the hell do you outrebound a team 49-25 and lose?!
-
How the hell do you outrebound a team 49-25 and lose?!
While only allowing 7 threes
-
We let them run a layup drill on us.
-
How the hell do you outrebound a team 49-25 and lose?!
1)Turn the ball over 18 times
2)Did everything possible to blow the game in the final two minutes
-
We let them run a layup drill on us.
Don't recall that happening when Kofi was playing....
-
I still think that defense is an afterthought for Underwood and nobody on the staff, if anybody is trying, can convince him to come to his senses.
We'so so potent on offense that we don't have to worry about defense is a good way to lose to any well coached team.
-
Can't recall the last time a team won it all by just playing offense with no defense. Not in college not in the NBA. Sure the Warriors had some years with a new style of offense that had teams on their heels, but they also had guys playing legit defense like Draymond, Iguodala, etc.
We're destined to lose early in the tournament unless that changes. I'll stick to my earlier post that were breaking our sweet sixteen drought this year. But that's about it.
-
4 straight loses to Penn st lol
Not even Groce did that
We are 14-17 vs PSU since 2006. Underwood is 4-7.

I think any team with a lead guard(s) who can penetrate and score or kick, any decent big who can score inside, and a wing or two who can shoot the three ball a little bit can beat us on any given night.
Bonus points if they can run and jump trap our ballhandlers or post and recover, and god help us if they have a team of aggressive quick on ball D guys.
Imagine us vs Houston or Iowa State or Auburn.
I just don't think we have the quickness to stay in front of people or make them uncomfortable feeding the post or running their sets. We are the Washington Generals on D right now.
We were moving and working much harder on positioning and pack line earlier on. Once we started clicking on offense we have been fucking the dog.
It seems like an effort and intensity thing. But we just are not very quick.
We are near last in country in forcing TOs.
I remember last year when we would talk about the next opposing guard who would have a career night against our shit Olé drop coverage trying to make teams shoot "tough twos".
We were doing better this year in first half. In freefall since.
This year it is picking the guards who can get to the tin at will on us and create havoc.
-
I know it has been said by a few guys here, but 10-12 mpg of Sincere Harris would be good right now.
He could dog the point guard, disrupt a little bit, and bring some intensity.
-
Banned on loyalty for saying "get a new coach" lol
-

Not sure it would matter much, since Underwood switches everything and teams attack Goode and Domask...

They are pussies over there.

DGL seems to have some of that intensity. When Kern was scoring at will, Underwood could have looked at DGL and told him to get in the game and dog the shit out of Kern.
But Underwood appears to have no interest in disrupting the other team's tempo, while he watches the coach on the other bench do it.
-
I still have faith that we can get a 4 or 5 seed in the only tournament that matters.
The Big10 tourney.

Was banned over there during the Weber years.

The Big10 tourney.
These next 5 games will be the toughest stretch of Illinois remaining schedule. Iowa, Minnesota, @Wisconsin, Purdue, @Iowa. I'd be shocked, but happy if we win 3 of them.

Up 8 with 2 minutes to go. Goode misses from 3 in the corner, with 22 seconds left on the shot clock.
The announcer, having no idea how right he might prove to be: you wonder if that might have ended the game.
Underwood: Luke missed an open 3 from the corner.
HQ2 : run clock 😂
-
SMDH
I thought you might enjoy that comment. 😂😂
-
It's hilarious when people say we have to keep underachiever because of recruits coming in, not like they wont leave after first year
-
Just read on Google News a story from Champaign Room concerning last night's debacle and pretty much the problems of the last 6-8 games. Bad coaching, lack of fundamentals, lack of killer instinct. And why does BU have his son sitting there with him and not Frazier, who actually played Big10 basketball pointing things out?
Too many non-conference games against weak opponents (EIU, WIU, Valparaiso, Colgate, Oakland) will make your defensive efficiency look good.
-
I do wonder what role Frazier has. This defense has none of his character.
I do have to say that just a couple days ago this board was nuthugging Underwood pretty heavily.
Now his competency is being questioned.
-

if Harmon makes that layup with no time remaining we'd probably be having a much different talk
but, here we are

I figured you, and maybe Custard, would be disappointed if I didn't react.

You can't express those thoughts at Loyalty, that's for sure.
-
if Harmon makes that layup with no time remaining we'd probably be having a much different talk

Maybe some would. Some wouldn't.
-
We are 7-4 in last 11 games in a league with only two ranked teams.
Have had a couple close wins and close losses so it kind of evens out.
Can't win them all, but I think what you see is what you get right now.
The defense is a problem that needs to be addressed.
We could make a run to EE or get knocked out in first round.
-
if Harmon makes that layup with no time remaining we'd probably be having a much different talk
but, here we are
And I wondered why Harmon was taking our last shot with a, what, 1 on 3 at the rim ?
We ran TSJ into the corner and he was covered, which took him out of the play. PSU left Harmon open, so we obliged and inbounded the ball to him.
-
I just feel like this team is a 2nd round out again.

Same. But it would not surprise me if they won it all!

Hopefully won't play Loyola....

I likely would probably say I likely agree. But probably, I likely think that it is probable and likely that i won't happen. But it's likely that it maybe probably will.
-
I’m not sure who we can beat in the first round
Well, it's probable that we will likely get a favorable matchup that we could likely beat. But I wouldn't be surprised with a first round exit. Probably.
-

Hard to say. We can compete with anyone it appears, but allow anyone to compete with us.
We will be a 4/5/6 seed at this point which means a 13/12/11 first round game. Not a gimme.
Second round will be a 5/4/3 game (or a hot midmajor du jour) which will be a very tough one no matter what.
Need to start playing some D.
-
I likely would probably say I likely agree. But probably, I likely think that it is probable and likely that i won't happen. But it's likely that it maybe probably will.
Even when you take time off you still "got it."
-
If Akron were to beat Illinois in 1 of the first 2 rounds....the bloodletting online would be something to behold.

The hot midmajor du jour is what scares me about the 2nd round. Brad has shown that he lacks getting his guys prepared for that game, I likely probably think.

That would actually be amazing

The committee most likely will not put us against Akron.
But maybe they will.

I don't know. The committee seems to probably like matchups in that round with history. It probably, likely wouldn't happen but it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

Almost 24 hours later and this shit still pisses me off. I’ve never been so fucking angry like this after a loss. Usually I process them and within 10-15 minutes I go on with my day. But this…I still can’t wrap my head around.
We had a 12 point lead with 5 minutes. 10 point lead with 2:30 left. 7 point lead with 40 seconds left. We had ONE FUCKING JOB which was not to play like a bunch of low thinkers. And we did exactly that and more.
This was like Northern Iowa blowing a 10 point lead with 30 seconds in the tourney against Texas A&M. But at least they still had a chance in overtime. PSU snatched our souls out and denied us even that opportunity.
We just gave up 90 points in a 40 minute game to the 169th ranked offensive efficiency team and who’s leading scorer is no longer on the team. Our defense, to quote Family Guy, is full blown aids.
-
The only positive I can come up with is that sneaking a win out of that abortion may have not sent the message this loss hopefully will. As the Sleepers guys said, Illinois is everyone’s offense’s “get right” game.
-
It's taken me about 20+ hours to come down off the ceiling. I sure hope this loss sends the right message. So many ways we pissed this one away like NW and MSU.
Taking a step back, we do have 4 road conference wins, which isn't shabby, and all of our road losses were actually winnable. Give me that in November, and I'd have taken it. Just win out at home now.
-
I'm not sure it's that easy to change course at this point in the season.
We have met the enemy, and it is us.
-
I can recall plenty of talented teams that couldn’t quite put it together during the regular season but then went on deep tourney runs. None of them wore Illinois jerseys, sadly.
-
I wasn't able to watch last night, but was checking the score periodically online.
Up 9 with less than 3 minutes to go, and 98% chance to win. 98%!
I couldn't believe my eyes when the final score pop up alert came. WTAF?
Sounds like there was plenty to bitch about but the bottom line -- This team can't close. Recipe for disaster.
First or second round out again...
-
And to think people thought not having a pg wouldn't be a big deal

What if that pg had some quickness on defense. ?
-
I gave up on Underwood when they lost to Houston in the 2nd round of the tourney a few years ago when Houston's two best players were out.
Underwood is a good recruiter and can regularly make the tourney, but he lacks the temperament to be big game coach.
-

Doesn't matter when the guy guarding Goode or Domask sets a pick and Goode or Domask have to switch onto the ballhandler.

He did well to get us out of the basketball purgatory Weber and Groce put us in. I'll be forever thankful to him for that even if he isn't the guy to lead us to the promised land in the end.
-
What if that pg had some quickness on defense. ?
That always helps but pg's generally not recruited for their D.
-
wait...
I'm on vacation and wasn't following.
Did I actually read correctly how that game ended?

Still raining in CA?
No sir.

Ayo and Kofi were great recruits and Shannon was a great transfer pick-up.
I suspect Morez Johnson and whomever he gets via the transfer portal will get them into the tourney next year, but I don't expect Illinois to make a deep tourney run with Underwood.
-

Will be interesting to see what happens over summer. We will have only one guy who has played starter minutes returning and he is a small forward who can't shoot anything but a layup. Will need to bring in 5 or 6 guys capable of being starters or in rotation.
-
And to think people thought not having a pg wouldn't be a big deal
Doesn't matter who is the PG, when the other 4 (Thurston, Lovie, Ginger, Professor) leave poor Gilligan back there by himself all the time.

supposedly a window got broken in Illini locker room

Cannot have Goode in game at end.

Agreed and said the same thing in an earlier post. It's like, "gotta get my spot around the 3 point line" mentality. Makes it hard for Domask who isn't a true PG, not that fast/quick.
-
I think there is simply no high level ballhandler/decision maker on the team. We essentially start all 2's and 3's. Then we really only play Harmon and Goode who are more of the same.
Good, to very good, and one great player but none have never had to be that guy to deal with late game ball pressure and decisions in full and halfcourt.
Maybe they need to try Moretti in spots. He has pretty decent handles and vision and PG instincts.
-
Moretti does like to shoot.

They'll have very little offense returning... I can see Hansberry, Johnson, Rodgers and a couple veteran transfers starting with Goode and Harris coming off the bench.
Although Underwood hyped him up early in the season, I'm expecting very little from DGL next year.
