game starts at 11AM for you flyover country enjoyers
Hope to see more of what we got on Tuesday from this team. Less turnovers would be good and shooting 60% again would also be good...
probably will be a defensive grinder game with the score in the 60's
My best guess is 68-65 Tennessee
Betting line has Illinois as 6 point dogs, over under at 145
-
I fully expect a loss. Just hope it’s a good close game and we keep building on the momentum we’ve had the last couple weeks.
-
brad on the preview, sounds like he has the sniffles

Cocaine. I’m sure most high-level coaches use it…
-
Cocaine. I’m sure most high-level coaches use it…
They can certainly afford it
-
11 AM start time.
That means….we’re fucked.
-
Coke is dead as dead. Heroin is coming back in a big fuckin way.

He’s not the only one. I probably picked up the COVID along the way somewhere this past week.

Lol
-
Spent the last week of October in NYC. I think I brought back shit that’s never even been studied before. Still not sure I’m fully recovered. And I’m a strong healthy dude in (what’s likely the end of) my prime.
-
Sorry you have vaxaids
-
That’s almost certainly not the issue
-
11 AM start time.
That means….we’re fucked.
Damn, I’m gonna miss over half the game. My kid has a basketball clinic at 11:15

11 AM start time.
That means….we’re fucked.
The Loyola game was because Sister Jean cursed us.
-
Gotta watch this one on tape delay today boys, good luck and watch your nuts!
-
Rodgers FTs looked good.
Guerrier looks good so far. We need to guard and pick up our intensity to match theirs.
-
We've got a game. Let's go Domask step it up.
-
Damn they can shoot.
-
Need to step up our defense.
-
Apart from being scared to try and defend #30 on that monster dunk Hawk is playing well. Oh yeah and apart from that over the head backwards pass to the other team.
-
For as good as they’re playing in us to be up one at their place is pretty amazing
-
Good d by Shannon forcing the charge.
C'mon Domask, get it going.
-
We've looked really good out of half the last few games. My hope was a close score going into halftime and let's keep it that way.
Illini playing some good defense and making some nice passes to the open guy. Just need TSJ to explode.
-
Shannon and Domask a combined 2/11.
Thank god Quincy showed up today.
-
Please, no more commercials with Deion I'm on Freon.
-
Yeah we need TSJ to get going. It’s a good sign we’re only down one and he’s had such a bad game offensively so far.
-
This team doesn’t have a rim protector
-
So many threes on both ends.
-
Yeah Goode!!!
-
Only 2 pages at halftime? Surprising.
-
Big shot by Goode!
-
Only 2 pages at halftime? Surprising.
All you wanna talk about is Justin fucking Fields. Stfu
-
Love it! Up two at half to Tennessee at their place!
-
Shooting 34% and up 2 on the road in a tough environment. I'll take it.
More threes are gonna have to fall if we're gonna pull this off. Tenn is taking away our inside game.
-

Was just typing this…
-
Big shot by Goode!
Yeah, huge. Damned good to be up 2 at UT with our 2 top scorers with 2 baskets.
-
Our team is very mature and doesn’t look like much is gonna rattle them. They’re pretty calm and stay the course.
-
We are getting decent open looks in half court.
Improving on offense overall.
We have good shot at this.
-
All you wanna talk about is Justin fucking Fields. Stfu
I’m at my kid’s basketball clinic. I can’t watch the game.
-
Overall good Hawkins today. Nice start to the second half.
-
Hawkins best game so far
-
That’s a fucking terrible call…
-
Another terrible call on that foul…
-
Flagrant go fuck yourself refs.
Shannon BOOM
-
Refs are trying…
-
Refs are trying…
....to screw us.
-
The Domask at PG experiment worked for one game. Ugh.
-
Rebound the fucking ball!!!!
-
Danger zone right now but we are showing a lot of resilience.
-
Shannon and Domask struggling and only a two possession game. This is doable.
-
It’s unbelievable how the refs are trying to fucking will Tennessee to a win. It really is.
-
We need to attack the basket more on offense.
-
It’s unbelievable how the refs are trying to fucking will Tennessee to a win. It really is.
Like the loose ball rolling toward the time line and UT guy pushing Domask out of bounds so he can get the ball and get a fast break going?
We have no rim protector.
-
Stop chucking 3s and play some defense, please
-
Same old Illinois. No PG. No mental toughness. And guys that can go for 30 one day and 2 the next.
-
Getting out of hand now. Gotta weather this storm and hopefully fight back. Otherwise this is over.
-
Shannon and Domask are 3/19.
We're 9/32 from threes. Amazed we stayed in it this long with those kind of shooting numbers honestly.
Oh well. The FAU and Rutgers games were fun. Let's knock the crap out of Colgate next week.
-
We're not getting good looks anymore.
-
Stop chucking 3s and play some defense, please
I hear ya. Coleman going 3 happy. Bumps into a teammate out beyond 3 line trying to have the ball. Damned 9-31 from 3.
Nice play Shannon and Guerrier.
-
It was fun while it lasted.
-
They don’t have it today. Need a huge run.
-
They're trying to get it all back in one shot. There's no 11 point shot in basketball guys.
-
Domask has been a complete no-show. Hawkins can't defend the rim and keeps shooting 3s. Not looking good.
-
TSJ needs to take over late. Drive and score or dish.
We have a chance.
-
It’s gotta start happening about now if they’re going to make a run.
-
They need someone that can protect the rim
-
It was fun while it lasted.
-
Can't have Domask and Goode in game at same time late when behind and trying to get stops.
-
What an utter bullshit call.
-
That ref just fucked us with that late ass foul call!!
-
Domask was more Bill Cole than Larry Bird today.
-
That ref just fucked us with that late ass foul call!!
Backbreaker.
-
That ref just fucked us with that late ass foul call!!
My 90 year old mom questioned why the guy that lowers the shoulder into the defender, causes the foul, gets to shoot FTs.
-
Hawkins having the green light to shoot a three is mind boggling. For every 10 attempts he might hit 1 or 2 of them.
-

Does she own a black and white shirt and a whistle?
-
Our pressure actually looks pretty good.
-
Shout out to Quincy. Dude balled out today.
-
Love the effort, but Hawkins could have had an easy basket with some anticipation on that full court press.
-
Does she own a black and white shirt and a whistle?
Not that I know of.
-

I don't get it either.
-
No shame in losing to a top 20 team on their court. Still took 2/3 in the toughest stretch of our schedule. Hard to complain about that.

Didn't cover the 6....
-

Why stand there with his back to the inbound passer? Get in his face waving arms, try to distract him. A minute later Guerrier was doing that exact thing.
???
-
The 5 minutes to start the second half where the refs completely changed what a foul was swung the game.
I don't know that we deserved to win, but we deserved a chance at the end and didn't have one because of that stretch that let TN jump out to a lead.

Well said.
-
That ref just fucked us with that late ass foul call!!
I was honestly mostly fine with the actual call, but I've legitimately never seen one called that late. He let the dude shoot a high arcing shot, it came all the way down, the other guy got it and put it back up, and then he called a foul on the first one. It was literally 2-3 full seconds delayed.
-
We came back to Earth on threes.
I think we are going to be a 32-33% 3 pt shooting team. Not terrible but not great.
Thst looked like round of 32 game and we played hard and competed.
We have enough decent role players to pick each other up when some of them are off.
We have potential to be pretty good. Like top 16 good if we develop.
-
9-36, other than that we played them tough at home. 36 3's per game will not win us many close ones.
We had them in some serious foul trouble for awhile, should have driven every time to further that narrative. Law of averages says we would have shot more FT that way.
-
Just need to win the next three (beat fucking Miznoz please!) and get to 10-2 heading into the Northwestern game.

I think after the three possession stretch in the first half where Shannon drove and got hammered consecutively without getting a call - once in the face - he was more timid with drives for a while. I don't really blame him for that. I don't think this was that bad, because at this point the refs were letting us be really physical too. What's important is that both teams know what's a foul and what isn't. Then they opened up the second half with a stretch where what was a foul completely changed.
It's hard to keep driving into the paint when the result is you get hacked without a call and it's a lost possession.
-
My son goes to UT and I just got back from the game. The officiating was just terrible, but I’m not quite sure it cost us the game, but it was still frustrating. The UT fans in our section were total fucking redneck Assholes. They were throwing F bombs at us for cheering on our team. Good thing my son was with me because I had to restrain myself.
-
"If that's what they're gonna give you, we've got good shooters, I'm great with it".- Brad Underwood on 35+ 3pt attempts.
🙄...good luck with that.

The problem is Hawkins had 10 of those attempts. A career 27% from beyond the arc. He should be one the very last people on the roster chucking threes.

There you go. Bad shooter taking that many 3s is not a recipe for success.
-
I still do not like Coleman Hawkins. Probably never will.
-
The game certainly changed after that bullshit flagrant foul. We didn't rebound well and shot too many 3s. Free throws and turnovers were good though. On to the next one.
-
We hung with a team that was home and ranked ahead of us. The fact that this was actually winnable, is encouraging. Our team is still figuring some things out and I don't feel we've peaked yet. Gonna be a fun season. And yeah, the zebras were second class.
-
I haven't seen a second of the game but 36 from 3 pops out in the box score, as does giving up 52 pts in the 2nd half. If I saw the 9 turnovers I might think we had a good shot at a win but then I see the getting outrebounded by a bunch and maybe getting beat up in the paint ?
With the does Underwood go or stay with a 1st round exit or a 2nd round exit talk, I prefer to look at the team in game performance. Winning is nice and losing while playing well is something I can live with.
Underwood and his assts must know by now that 25% on 36 attempts is not going to win much, especially with Hawkins putting up double digit 3 pt attempts. He might get hot for a game all season doing it, but the chances of us winning when the team bricks a ton of 3s can't be very good.
Shoot if you're open, we have good shooters needs to be replaced with .....
" Coach, I was open"
Underwood, "why do you think that was?"
-
I don’t mind Hawkins shooting threes but my guess is he shoots 25% better on spot up catch and shoot threes than off the dribble threes. He needs to cut the second thing completely out of his game. I get that a guy with his size and skill set who can make that shot consistently is incredibly valuable but a guy who shoots them and doesn’t make them consistently is hurting his team.
He’s still our best defensive player by a lot though.
-

So are 27 missed 3 attempts, the story is the same, the gameplan seems as if nothing has changed, our talent is there. Again, we will not win many games shooting nearly 40 3's.
In the 2005 C-Ship game against UNC we shot I think 40...what was that outcome again?
Yes both of these games were close, but we shot an outrageous amount of 3's in both games. We had a chance to win both, but did we really? Refs were terrible in both of these games and again no adjustments, just keep chucking 3's.
That game the amount of 3's really stood out afterwards, and this game the same. That is the only comparison I am trying to make, same ole same ole against top caliber teams. Not gonna work for us. We have a very good chance to have a very good season, but not if BU stance is take em if that is what is given, C'mon really?

We shot too many threes today, but if I were you I'm not sure I'd use "shooting a bunch of threes didn't work for the 2005 team" as evidence.
-
Hawkins is on the top 3 most frustrating Illinois player of all time list.
-
You cannot shoot 25% on that many 3s and get out muscled/rebounded and expect to win, particularly when we have forwards hanging around the perimeter because they're either the shooter or running point for some reason.
-
Today did nothing to help our PG woes.
Still we're in the games and only going to get better. Just without a true PG I fear we may hit year 19 with no S16.
Not a bad loss. Losing to Mizzery would be a bad loss.
-
I still do not like Coleman Hawkins. Probably never will.
I look forward to next season when I don't have to worry about seeing him complaining to the refs all game

I think using that analogy for the 2005 team for the 1 game that I did is totally appropriate. I didn't use it for the entire year. One game vs One game is what I used as evidence.

12-40 vs 9-36...seems bout right

Hawkins - Nichols - Richmond would have to be mine as much as I can recall anyway.

Nm

Kipper had a pretty good last year…
Agreed, but he was always a frustrating player and had that same kind of Hawkins "where is the foul-that foul was on me" crap going on.
-
I was thinking of someone else lol
-
I look forward to next season when I don't have to worry about seeing him complaining to the refs all game
The ongoing phrase we use in our game chat is "Hawkins makes me drink." He may be the most frustrating Illinois player in my lifetime. At the game, all the Illinois fans in our section were yelling "nooooooooo" every time Hawkins got the ball at the 3 point line.
-

I am not a big fan, but his last two games have been better. I can actually live with what we saw yesterday on both sides of the ball.
-
We're 58th in the country in 3 pt tries and 225th in percentage.
Domask, Guerrier and Hawkins have 92 tries and hitting them at a blistering 20%. Rodgers is at 0% because he hasn't tried any. Or he could be considered to be at 100% because he hasn't tried any.
TSJ has 59 attempts and shooting at 42% and is the primary reason we're not lower than 225th in 3 pt fg percentage. Goode is also helping in that ranking.
We haven't been as bad as last year at anyone, guarded or not, getting the green light to shoot from anywhere on the floor at any time in the shot clock.

We are 1% better on 3p shooting percentage and 1% less on the amount of 3 pointers we attempt compared to last year.
So basically same deal.
We do seem like we are taking a few less absolute shit unmakeable looks. I think we will not backoff on taking threes and not get much better but will inch up around 33%.
Domask Hawkins, and Guerrier will not shoot 20% rest of year. Of course TSj and Goode will not shoot over 40% rest of year.
Theoretically if we are in 32% or 33% territory that is a license to keep shooting them. D1 average is 34%. Coach redass will tell you to fckoff and we are elite shooters if he gets questioned on it.
Will have good nights and bad nights. The analytic goal is to hit 33% of threes which is a 50% EFG%.
We only play three games rest of year vs Top 25 KenPom teams.
We should grind out 13 wins or so in league no matter what from our decent defense and rebounding and TSj.
The BT is unbelievably weak again this year with only three teams total in Top 25 KenPom.
Last year was worse believe it or not. Only two teams in Top 25.

I can't even remotely give CoHawk credit for me wanting to drink...I love to do that anyways!!!!

If you’re easily swayed by mind blowingly simple analysis, this is extremely compelling.

I agree entirely with your 33% benchmark for shooting 3s and the need to focus on taking better shots, as others have also pointed out, to get there.
~33% was the benchmark last year. Until getting to that figure, being in the top 25-30 in attempts made no sense. A brick 3 can essentially be a turnover with a transition bucket by the other team.
A made 2 beats a bad shot 3 that is missed. A good 3 pt shot that is missed is part of the game, and every team has those.
-
If you’re easily swayed by mind blowingly simple analysis, this is extremely compelling.
Well I was quoting based on a single game in both instances, how much analysis is warranted?

Erik Krueger doesn't need to use stats to tell us about what we've been watching since Underwood declared, either last year or the year before, that we'll shoot a lot of 3s.
Tell the staff.
