Marquette has a starter injured.
We are at home.
I think we have great chance win this one.

Hopefully the Illini listened to Beach Bum and practiced free shots and three-point shots since Friday

Oh man. This squad needs Beach Bum, with his down syndrome looking face, busting into the facility and telling them that they need to make free shots or they're not gonna believe the next two fucking days.
That would fix it.
-
Disclaimer: I don't know for sure that Beach Bum has down syndrome. It's just an easy assumption for me to make.

Important caveat there, as I was actually contemplating if you had met Beach Bum.

Low hanging fruit

Wisconsin down big
-
Wisconsin looks like ass.
Again.

Wisconsin looks like ass.
Again.
AJ Storr must really hate Illinois…

Take Hawkins out
-
Marquette can guard as good as we do. Damn their D is impressive.

Marquette plays fast

Marquette plays fast
And hard.
Good combo…
Lol

Looks like they're pushing us around

They’re physical and tough

Bad Hawkins tonight. Sit him.

Hawkins is bad but who replaces him lol

They’re physical and tough
Good. We'll see if we match it
-
Hawkins is bad but who replaces him lol
I like Underwood giving Hansberry a chance.
-
Kolek is good.
Make your fucking FT’s!!!
-
Feels like Marquette has 8 players on the court.
-
stop shooting threes
Guerrier has 8 boards.
-
Hawkins got put in a blender.
-
58% of the shots from 3. Unreal. This team is awful from 3.
-
Kolek is good.
Make your fucking FT’s!!!
14 pts, 7-11 shooting with 4 boards and 3 assists.
Lol
-
Needed that 3 from Goode. Only down 5 but Marquette (read:Kolek) is getting hot now.
-
19 three attempts in the first half. We had 16 for the entire game against Oakland I believe.
-
Oh oh. The announcers are talking about our 3s already. It took til the end of the year last year.
-
The drive and dish is the only way we are getting any decent looks. Agree with JJ it looks like Marquette has 8 players on the floor.
-
Danja gonna be transferring soon…
-
I like Underwood giving Hansberry a chance.
At least Hansberry's head isn't up his ass like Hawkins.
-
Lucky were only down 5. We should be down 15. This will be a route in the 2nd half.
-
Actually set the pick Hawkins
-
We should be losing by 20, but somehow only down 1
-
Marquette missing that dunk could be a turning point for us
-
Hawkins showed up this half.
-
Where the fuck is everybody?! This is electric. Of all the shit we deal with as Illini and Bears fans were not here cheering the good shit?!
-
We're playing hard. We know we're in a game like the Ks game.
-
Yet Fields and the shitty Bears take over everything. What the fuck?!
-
Hawkins showed up this half.
The block on Kolek was a helluva way to make up for the brain dead pass he threw.
-
Love seeing an aggressive Domask.
-
Domask is our second best player. Very impressed.

Damn somebody guard Kolek please…

Somebody fucking stop Kolek!!!!!!!
-
Fuck
-
Nothing on offense for us
-
Marquette is getting every loose ball
-
And getting out hustle. They’re more poised than us.
-
Dain, you didn't have to block that!
-
Game's slipping away...
-
10-25 from 2 and 44% from 3.
Odd numbers for us.
-
Doubt this will happen, but need to get more shots for Domask and Goode.
-
That’s probably game. Hopefully this and the Kansas game help us come March. This game was tough and so is Marquette.
-
Rodgers passed up an open layup. My god.
-
This a very, very, good Marquette squad. No shame in losing this one even at home. They're legit.
We were right there. Too much Tyler fucking Kolek and too many low IQ plays and wasted possessions by us down the stretch.
-
Blame me.. we were winning when I turned the game on.
-
Yeah no shame in that loss. Lots of mistakes, but hopefully we clean those up.
-
Blame me.. we were winning when I turned the game on.
We were tied when I turned it on. All downhill from there.
-
Some of our more inexperienced guys straight up pissed down their legs the last 5 minutes. That said it was all still there for us with wide open threes (and a layup) that didn’t go down near the end. Some good things on defense for sure and the team fought the entire game. Marquette looks like a team that was good last year and brought everyone back. Tough to beat a team like that when making the kind of mistakes we made down the stretch. I felt like we were playing with house money in this one as long as we didn’t get ran out of the gym.
-
I saw guys stepping on the line, throwing the ball into the stands, passing up open shots, and bricked open 3s. Looked a lot like what I saw last year.
-
Marquette played like shit and still led start to finish minus a minute or 2. We play dumbass low iq basketetball. Cant shoot 3s for shit. Have shit interior defense and no half court offense whatsoever. Just dribble dribble jack up a 3. And we have no point guard what so ever. Without domask we lose by 30 tonight. Gonna be a long year.

Squeaky?
-
We have issues. No PG to run an offense in half court and get us into good positions, and Hawkins is in a bad place on both sides of ball.
We have really inconsistent bench right now.
15 TOs and shot 35%.
-
This should be a good defensive team, but they're lacking on offense and coaching.
Dainja doesn't look playable vs good teams.
The 2 freshmen did very little tonight but hopefully they can both be contributors, especially DGL. They need another playmaker besides Shannon.
Hawkins was a pretty big disappointment tonight.
-
The bad part about having Rodgers at PG is if the defend sags off of him, he’s no threat whatsoever to shoot a 3. That limits our ball movement and penetration and kick outs for 3’s.
Who was it we had that they did that to and dared them to shoot?! Wasn’t it a player during the Groce years?
-
We got a fucking Marquette pervert removed from the game! Look what that sicko was doing…

Ok, I scrolled up and saw it. Videoing cheerleaders is a jailable offense?

You can’t have Rodgers out there as a lead guard. Period.
Use Domask and Shannon to be playmakers. Start Goode. DGL is first guard off the bench. Rodgers is a backup undersized 4.

Our offense is a jailable offense for three years now.

🤷🏻♂️ I guess. I don’t think he went to jail but was kicked out. In the comments it says some people saw him outside after the game.

Yes, that’s it.

Watched a little bit of Iowa/Creighton and they game was way easier on the eyes.

Purdue did that to Chester.

Watched a little bit of Iowa/Creighton and they game was way easier on the eyes.
Even Justin Fields could score on Iowa.
-
Sanborn and Kwikki seem to be pretty good for Iowa.
-
Good Loss (if it's such a thing), Marquette will be highly ranked all year imo, at least if their lead guard can stay healthy.
Rodgers - C'mon you got to at least look for a layup when it's there
Shannon - Alpha Dog once again, serious All American this year
Goode - Career high for him, confidence builder?
Domask - Swiss Army type player but with better offense than most of these types, is he Swiss?
DGL - Not enough minutes to say yay or nay tonight
Hawkins - Well there is always somewhere to play next year...still think there is a possibility he doesn't finish the year with us? Vibes/attitude/tolerance is waning more every game imo
Dainja - Man what regression so far
Move on, we should stay ranked, but non conference will show us alot. Without any inside game to speak of at all, we will die with the 3's and we will not make it past game 1 ncaa tourney either. Next years team (transfers unknown at this point) will struggle greatly. Thats being polite.

1. That was a very good "learning game" for B1G season.
2. Hawkins and Dain have regressed, the latter being a noticeably worse player.
3. Particularly if Dain sucks Rodgers does more for us as a rotation forward than a lead guard. Run Shannon, DGL, Domask, Harmon, and see what happens.
4. Why is Harris redshirting when we're desperate for functional guards?
-
Marquette was the better team. Glad they are #5 and not #15 or #25. Definitely a step up from the illini but hopefully only a few of those teams out there.
We have a solid team but hopefully get more consistency out of our top guys.
-

I don't get why Brad keeps talking up Hawkins like he's a future Hall of Famer. He might give you decent defense at times but his offensive game and IQ haven't evolved one bit. Not to mention his body language is piss poor. Throws his hands up every time a call goes against him and hollers at his own teammates/coaches. If the longest tenured Underwood guy currently on the roster and one of the so-called leaders is exuding that kind of body language and underwhelming play then the team may as well be dead on arrival.

The book is out on how to guard Dain
1)Neutralize his go-to spin move
2)Hack the shit out of him and put him on the line (though that strategy isn't just Dain-specific when it comes to our free throw shooting)
-

Use Domask and Shannon to be playmakers. Start Goode. DGL is first guard off the bench. Rodgers is a backup undersized 4.
Can't have bad shooters like Rodgers, Hawkins and Guerrier on the floor together. Need to try a different starting 5 with either Goode or DGL replacing Rodgers.

Because Harris is not a functional guard. Needs to play in the secondary on football team.

Hawkins is shooting 5-16/ 31% overall.
He is 1-7/ 14% on 3P Field goals
He has 10 Assists/9 TO's
He has 6.3 Reb/PG
He is averaging 4.6 PPG
He does average 7 Tantrums/Game to lead the BT

Only thing I can think of with Hawkins is the somber reality that he isn't making the NBA has set in. Now he's that old guy on campus wondering WTF am I doing with my life, do I really want to go play bball in Israel or Turkey. This sucks.

Sadly, he isn't even the old guy on campus either, not good at that either.

If he's just now coming to this realization, he's dumber than you.
And, you can actually make a nice living playing overseas. It's better than selling insurance or used cars.
Or shotguns at Scheel's

I’d one million percent be down with playing basketball in Italy or France.

Yeah I’d play basketball anywhere in the world for money for as long as I could if I had the opportunity…

I've always wondered what they make, I'm sure it varies quite a bit depending on how good you are and where you play; but I don't think I've ever found reliable info.

Just found something that says 80-200k. I'd live in Florence for 125k a year.

Then please give a better explanation for his recent play and demeanor. But knowing how you love mediocrity and under achievers I'm sure you think things are fine.

This isn't recent. He's had a shitty attitude since he walked on to campus. And he's always been very streaky and very basketball dumb and mentally weak.
You really are dumb. I know you can't help it, but wow.

This isn't recent. Compare YTD stats to last year. Thank you.

You have to make one of the higher level league teams overseas to make good money.
Not sure where he would land.
They watch the same games we do.
We can only hope he is putting too much pressure on himself and he will get out of this funk.
Otherwise we are going to have a very inconsistent team with him out there 30 mpg.
I mean watching him and Ighadouro who is also projected as a late second round pick it is not even close.
-
On any given night, Hawkins' best attribute may be that he is tall.
-
He had some nice blocks yesterday
-
Hawkins is the least of our problems.
This half court offense is abysmal.
Has been for years.

Because Harris is not a functional guard. Needs to play in the secondary on football team.
That and his family wants him to redshirt primarily to work with Fletcher. Hopefully to also get good at something other than on ball defense.

He looks frustrated. My impression is the coaches want him to post up closer to the basket. Take advantage of his size and length.
-

Good point. Hawkins has always been confident that he'll play in the NBA some day.
-
Hawkins is a what you see is what you get player. Just one of those players that you constantly want more from but you just never get it. I know some people are still looking at the game last night in a positive tilt but i felt like that Marquette played sub-par especially on the offensive end. They missed a bunch of bunnies. Our offense was ran 3 to 4 feet off the 3 point line the entire night late into the shot clock. Marquette was running their stuff straight up under our basket.
I was really disappointed with defense just as much as the offense. We were fortunate Marquette missed as many as bunnies as they did as the final score should have been far worse than it was. They are not a national contender team. Any team with a decent front court will give them massive headaches. They play good pressure defense, but we made Kolek look far greater because our front court is so fucking terrible.
I don't really know how much improvement this team can make with so many upperclassmen playing the overwhelming majority of minutes. These are guys that are already 23 years old doing the same dumb ass shit as last year and the year prior. The only silver lining in anything is that Domask is a damn good player, but is limited athletically.
-
They missed a lot of those close shots because we have length and athleticism and challenged them inside. And I do think it takes a little time to come together as a team/rotation even with upperclassmen dominating the minutes. Marquette returned like everyone from a good team last year. Pretty much everything else I agree with.
-

very much agree, I was furious at all the defensive lapses last night by veteran players... this switching defense brad is trying (again) is a massive pile of shit in ball screen situations and anyone with a half decent PG will rape us inside all night long

Very true, we will again next year be much the same....it doesn't look good for us. Transfers could change this, but if we don't do really well post season (we won't), then the transfer pipeline may dry up pretty quick as well.

No. Know it all insider at TOS says Moretti is not BIg Ten material. Illiniray says Moretti has some obvious ball handling and passing skills. Not sure if he is big enough or quick enough for BU. I would like to see him succeed so know it all insider would be wrong.
Jobu is being Jobu.

We need a primary ball handler in the worst fucking way. Even then I agree. We stand around the 3 point line way too much on offense and play hot potato on the perimeter with the ball. We’ve seen this exact fucking episode dating all the way back to the Groce and the tail end of the Weber years.
-
DGL, he is an athlete, he has some defensive chops, he wants to be aggressive.
Let him run the show, it will at least be entertaining, he will be the closest thing to a PG that we have, and he has the talent imo, to overcome being a freshman and will be far more adequate than what we have. 2-3 people trying to handle, 1/2 of the shot clock gone, and ONLY TSJ ramming the ball into the lane, otherwise 33 3'pt shots per game is our season.
-
Hope for Ray’s sake that Moretti isn’t hung like Rocco Siffredi
-
Epps so far tonight 5 pts-5 turnovers- 1 assist-2 rebounds and 1-5 on 3's.
I wonder who was in his ear? G-town and against Rutgers and this is his line?

Insiders at TOS say his decision to transfer was about a personal issue. He said he was sworn to secrecy and can't reveal anything else. I got the impression it was not basketball related.
Kids struggle. They get flustered, confused, and frustrated; which shows up in their body language. Fans and the media magnify it and analyze it to death.

I am still wondering about the Marquette fan getting kicked out for taking videos of the cheerleaders and then getting called a perv. I bounced this off my wife. She said he must have done more than this.

Epps had something off in the 2nd half of the year. Read this article's awkward phrasing with hindsight. This happened at the same time of Mayer's caffeine binge.
https://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/illini/illinois-basketballs-jayden-epps-hospitalized-overnight-after-he-went-down-at-practice/article_47ca4a2a-f18c-58b1-95b9-335977f1efd6.html
Mayer didn't see Epps' incident at practice, because Mayer missed Tuesday's practice due to caffeine poisoning. But he did say Epps had been released from the hospital.
"I wasn't there at practice, so I didn't see the whole event," Mayer said. "But I just saw him walking at the apartment. So I think it's affecting everybody. Everybody's just kind of waiting to see what happens. He's obviously OK, so everybody is OK with that. But we don't know what's going to happen to him the rest of the season or if he's going to have to quit basketball. We have no idea what's going on, so I'll just leave that to coach Underwood to explain that to you all."
There's a lot to unpack there.
-
With Underwood being so high on DGL, maybe he needs to starts and have Rodgers come off the bench.
They need another playmaker/scorer in there with Hawkins being so inefficient on offense and Guerrier being limited on offense.
It's basically 2 vs 5 on the offensive end when the current starting unit is out there.
-
Hawkins sucks harder than a black hole and I don’t like the Rodgers at PG experiment any more than anyone else, but I think Guerrier is better offensively than we saw last night. He’s a career 35% 3 pt shooter and has had a decent number of games where he scored 20+. Just couldn’t buy one last night for some reason.
-

Underwood is notorious for being unwilling to make obvious needed changes.
I agree they need to sit Rodgers. He has 3 assists for the fucking year facilitating the offense.
For all of the hype about being a bigger guard who will get offensive boards he has 1 for the year.
He has made a good percentage of his limited shots, but is absolutely no threat to take anything except a layup.
Oh, and he is shooting 0% from the line. He never draws fouls.
He is a nothingburger. He hurts us by his limited contribution and what he cannot do. Defenses can hedge off him and plug the paint.
I would zone the fuck out of us or play man with zone principles.
We can't take 33 threes a night and beat any good teams. We can take 20-25 threes a night as long as only certain guys are taking them.
Rodgers somehow played 29 minutes last night. We all knew UW wiould ride that horse he committed to when he whiffed this summer.
How long is the question.
I would start Goode.
Bring Rodgers and Dainja off the bench to sub for Hawkins or Guerrier.
Bring DGL along as first guard/wing to spell one of TSJ/Domask/Goode and hope he develops.
All three of TSJ, Domask, and DGL can penetrate in half court at times and get a shot off or make basic kick outs or dump downs.
None run the PnR well, but UW has never featured it.
All three have to be played up on as they can shoot the three sort of.
Nobody else on team can do all of those enough for defense to have to worry about it.
We have a really shit group of players in terms of offensive skillsets, but that is what he recruits.
He wants to drag people into a street brawl. Terrible roster construction as always.
Domask and TSJ need to run the team and play 30+ mpg. They are our best players and most well rounded offensively.
You then have three 3 point threats at all times to get spacing as long as Goode or DGL is out there also.
Teams can right now totally layoff Rodgers, Guerrier, Hawkins, and Dainja.
DGL only got 7 minutes last night. Fucking play him.
-
Hawkins sucks harder than a black hole and I don’t like the Rodgers at PG experiment any more than anyone else, but I think Guerrier is better offensively than we saw last night. He’s a career 35% 3 pt shooter and has had a decent number of games where he scored 20+. Just couldn’t buy one last night for some reason.
I agree Guerrier is pretty solid. He can guard on ball, rebound, and score a little bit.
He is better than Hawkins overall IMO.
-
Hawkins has a 78 Off Rating in KenPom.
Words cannot begin to explain how bad that is.
He was 101 last year which is very average to mediocre for a D1 starter.
-
I thought RJM played his best in and around the paint. Somehow 🤷♂️ his game last year became a go sit in the corner and brick a 3 once in a while. He became useless and left.
I understand that he was banged up much of last year but coaching should involve letting players play to their strengths and widening their game.
I see the same happening with Rodgers, except with Rodgers it's a case of go play the point because we didn't bring in anyone to do it other than a freshman and become useless there.
It can hurt Rodgers, the rest of the players and the team.
And we looked like we had no interest in playing two 20 minute halves vs Marquette after seeing a game finishing 6-7 minutes vs Oakland of some of the best defense we've played since parts of games during the Ayo years.
Underwood's teams need to play defense rather than hoping for somebody having a hot day from 3 in our half court offense.
-
Starting lineup for next game I would love to see and the issues:
DGL PG
TSJ Alpha
Domask Backup Alpha
Guerrier PF/C
Goode - F/W/G
Off the bench
Hawkins - who knows
Dainja - Rebounder?
Harmon - Defender????
Rodgers - Energy

Play this kid more. WTF are they waiting for?
DGL made 37 threes in a row in practice.

“Practice?! Not a game. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game. We talking about practice, man. We sitting here and I'm supposed to be the franchise player,” DGL pleaded, “and we talking about practice!”
-
Nope. That was Jobu.
Ahhhh, so this could be a case of projection.

I don't get our coaching staff sometimes
-
Well he did compile nothing except missed shots and a personal foul in 7 mins and had one of the worst +/- on the team so maybe there’s a difference between shooting in practice and shooting in a bright lights matchup against a top 5 team 3 games into your freshman year

Yeah, he had a nonfactor game vs Kansas also and got a quick hook.
He then had the big game vs EIU.
He seems to be being put in at the 15 minute mark and they kind of assess from there.
No doubt there is an adaptive learning curve for him and Hansberry.
What I would say is we need to promote his development and take the ups and downs that go with it.
His ceiling is so much higher than Rodgers who is a stopgap out there and it is apparent he is never likely going to be able to shoot well enough to be a long term option.
We are not going to the FF.
Play Rodgers all year heavy minutes on top and we end up ranked 20-30.
Play DGL more and have him assume a bigger role in the guard rotation and we end up ranked 20-30, but have a chance to be better overall by end of year.
Either way we are a 10-12 win team in the BT.
Rodgers can play the 4 where he belongs and we would have more depth inside with a usable defender and rebounder to backup Guerrier and Hawkins.
-
I kinda hope that’s what happens too.

We’re not going to the FF? There goes PAMan’s bracket.
-
I would agree that the upside of letting DGL playing through his mistakes is higher than the upside of Rodgers playing through his at PG.
-
We're gonna suck dick this year. But that's ok because Nichi is crushing hard on Moretti, and as he gets in, we'll hear all about it.

Apparently I can still be victorious over this crowd in such circumstances.

Think this team can be top 3 B1G but not with Hawkins playing as badly as he has been. And not without someone else (DGL ideally) having a light bulb come on and being reliable down the stretch.
Hansberry looks lost as an Easter egg out there.
Haven’t seen enough of Moretti to judge (thanks BTN+) but if Dennis Hopper knew what he was talking about in True Romance, he’s probably a big dick guy.
Gotta get Rodgers off the 3 point line. Complete waste of a player on the offensive end and Gee who didn’t see that coming 🙋🏻♂️
Good news is that Maryland and MSU haven’t looked great either. If anything, considerably worse than us to this point.

Have you noticed the bulge in his shorts? Apparently others have.

No, but that video circulating of Myles Garrett from the Browns game n his grey sweatpants on X you definitely can’t see his manhood 😳😳 mofo was like 10 eggplants in his pants.

What you’re not 10” soft like him and Moretti?

Not like that. Holy shit!

All accurate.
The BT is weak as usual, so we should be in Top 3, but will be a lot of ugly games on our way to 11 wins.
We will need a pretty decent shooting night from three to win any meaningful nonconference games.
After 4 games we are at 31% which is right where we were last year. I think we are going to be a lot like last year record wise TBH without the drama and less dramatic in game swings.
A little more watchable.
Just a fairly decent 6-8 seed type.
I really wish we had an offensive coordinator. Our system is no system.
