Title: 2020 Illinois Football Schedule
Post by: Jrock74 on September 22, 2020, 08:11:08 AM
@ Wisconsin (Oct. 24)
vs. Purdue (Oct. 31)
vs. Minnesota (Nov. 7)
@ Rutgers (Nov. 14)
@ Nebraska (Nov. 21)
vs. Ohio State (Nov. 28)
vs. Iowa (Dec. 5)
@ Northwestern (Dec. 12)

4 of the Illini's first 5 are very winnable, barring COVID impacts I still think this will be a fun season despite what some may think.  Illinois offense is stacked up front and will not disappoint this season.

Here ya go

Badgers' football opener against Illinois is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Camp Randall Stadium – without fans.
The game is to be televised by BTN.

On the plus side, we have more experience playing without fans.

It's a nice stadium, with a heated field that the Vikings paid for when building US Bank.
Bring ear plugs and don't sit in the shade.

Illinois should stack 8 players in the box against Wisconsin for the opener. New Badger QB after starter Jack Coan was recently injured and stud RB Jonathan Taylor is now playing in the NFL.

Lol, I hope you're wrong. Last year's Badger team was pretty solid on offense. This year they're vulnerable with question marks at most of the skill positions.

Lovie should tell his team they're playing Ohio State in game 1 (and Urban Meyer is no longer head coach). For some unknown reason, the Illini have played Ohio State more competitively than its record might suggest. Michigan wasn't the only opponent who loved playing against OSU during the John Cooper era. Illinois beat the Buckeyes 5 straight (and 6 out of first 7) to start the Dark Ages in Columbus with that choker as head coach of the Buckeyes.

Hope all is well.

Yeah good to see you found your way here! Looks like it opened with the Illini as 23.5 point dogs. I really hope the team takes another step forward this year.

Oddsmakers appear to be dismissing our returning offensive linemen.

I'm guessing Covid.
If it helps, the game isn't listed in Friday's odds in the local fishwrap.

Spread has come down several points from opening. Really thought it was high at first and apparently many others agree...but usually any time I see odds that seem like a sure fire pick the oddsmakers end up being correct.

Wisco qb Coan is out, as they say, with a foot. Wisco doesn't appear to have their rb heir apparent. It may take a couple of games to work out the kinks.
Before seeing anything, I'm thinking our d may be an adequate bend but dont break too often, but the offense may have to be geared around Peters and the receiving corps.
Good thing I proof read the last line. It started as "feared around Peters", lol.
I'm not sure we have a go to rb, unless Epstein is 100% and stays healthy, and an OL that may run block better than pass block might keep Rod Smith scratching his head.
Nonetheless .....

Fortunately, I had left bread crumbs the last time I stopped by.

That's a lot of points. New starting QB for Wisconsin. There won't be any fans in the stands at Camp Randall, which will make a huge difference. Usually the packed stands & boisterous atmosphere deliver a home field advantage for the Badgers. First game after an unusually long layoff and truncated off-season practice period, so who knows how either team will play.

With an experienced & solid OL returning, Illinois should be better on offense this year. QB Peters should be much improved as a passer this season with a year in the system (and additional WRs/TEs to target). However, those items alone won't translate into a better record (winning %) compared with 2019, as there are no cupcakes non-conference games on the schedule. Well, Rutgers might qualify but it's a road game. The defense needs to be as opportunistic in takeaways as it was in 2019. That would really help.

I do expect the offense to be solid.

I don’t think the D can be put in a position to be on the field for long stretches so we are going to need to control time of possession.

Would feel a lot better about that if Dre Brown had returned.  Peters has to stay healthy. Epstein who knows? And ugh the poor guy has that unfortunate surname. It’s like anyone that incidentally had the name Sandusky. Cant go back to the way things were.

I'd feel a lot better if Dr. Dre was coaching the Badger and got them all really stoned before the game and at half time.

A healthy Dre Brown returning this season could have been huge for the offense, especially with the returning OL and an experienced QB. But I can't fault him for moving on, especially after losing 2 seasons to knee injuries. Hopefully Epstein is fully recovered from his injury.

As for the Illinois defense, well, did I mention the offense should be pretty good this year?

Former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Brian Hightower committed to Illinois back in April, while wideout Khmari Thompson transferred in from the Missouri Tigers this summer.

Hightower, a former four-star prospect in 2018, had received scholarship offers from power five programs including Alabama, Clemson, USC, Florida, Michigan & Ohio State. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver caught 12 passes for 148 yards and a TD during his two seasons with the ‘Canes.
Thompson ran a 4.3 40 in HS.

From today's fishwrap
"A Wisconsin player has won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back four of the past eight years. Montee Ball won it in 2012, Melvin Gordon in 2014 and Taylor the past two seasons.
This marks the first time since 2006 that Wisconsin has opened a season without a single player who has rushed for at least 100 yards in a single game.Yet the Badgers remain confident in the guys who will be carrying the ball .
Wisconsin’s depth chart lists either Groshek or sophomore Nakia Watson as the first-team running back this week. Chryst says sophomore Isaac Guerendo also will get opportunities.
Groshek, a former walk-on, has 916 career yards rushing. He had 42 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns last year .
Watson ran for 331 yards and two touchdowns on 74 carries last season. Guerendo has one career carry.
They’ll be running behind a line that lost three starters from the 10-4 team that reached the Rose Bowl last year, though 32-game starter Jon Dietzen is back after he missed the 2019 season because of injuries."

The qb duties go to redshirt freshman Graham Mertz.

Let's say I was an administrator and cared about winning sports. Being an administrator, I'm probably not eligible. We'll need to recruit some players.

Where am I more likely to get such players? From the African American community, or from the Duck Dynasty community? Maybe if they stop virtue signaling they'll have a shot at landing Baron Trump, or Rush Limbaugh's kids.

Firing him would be one way Illinois could catch up to Iowa....

Based on how these games are going, and it is only game 1, but is 0-9 an actual possibility? Everyone else looks far more competent than Illinois did last night.

We play 8, but I don't think there is a minimum win requirement for a bowl game. So 0-9 would have to set some type of record for a bowl team.
Purdue, without Rondale Moore, beats xxxx 24-20.
