Fighting Illini Basketball Forum / Re: Recruiting
« on: April 18, 2025, 05:40:44 PM »This is interesting. Over 2000 players and counting in portal. Assuming there were 4000 plus players on rosters and some portion graduated or are out of eligibility that means maybe 60-70% of roster turnover on average minimum.
I have said college basketball is now one big AAU circuit anymore where kids switch teams constantly and the quality of basketball shows.
Roll the balls out, whoever pays the most gets the players and coaching influence and player and team development is generally a joke.
I only paid casual interest in this past season. It will be a rare program that will have any real culture or cohesion moving forward.
It's entertaining at times but overall boring shitty basketball.
I know a lot of you hate the NBA but they have guys on contracts and some continuity and the level of play is the best in the world.
College programs will need contracts for the players also to improve the quality otherwise it will be AAU summer league for most programs.
The present Illinois staff is able to get their share of players but has not demonstrated any real ability to establish a culture or successful system of sum greater than the parts or roster stability above anyone else.
We have the money and will get enough talent to be in top 25-40 each year it appears.
I guess it could be worse.
Yeah I agree it sucks, can't really get invested in any players we recruit anymore and watch them develop except for the rare bench players it seems.
