Perhaps this will help.
4 conference champs get 1st round byes, and one gets seeded #12.
A Big10 and SEC team will get 2 of the byes.
2 of the winners of SMU vs Clemson, Boise vs UNLV and Az St vs ISU will get byes. The other gets seeded #12.
With the current rankings, those 6 teams are ranked 8, 10, 16, 17, 18, 20.
There's a good chance that #10 and #15 in the current rankings will get byes.

What it should be ........

Oregon, Ga, Tx, PSU are seeded 1-4. The 4 teams that have been top ranked teams get byes.
Conference champions who aren't in the top 4 get 1st round home games as their "reward".
Boise, Az St, Clemson and ND with the #8 seed are 5-8 and get 1st round home games vs SMU, Ind, Tn and tOSU.

PSU and Tx losing to Oregon and Ga > Boise and Az St beating a couple of teams that didn't have a top 20 win.

One loss Notre Dame, who lost to a bad NIU team at home, gets rewarded with a home game against one loss Indiana, whose loss came on the road to a CFP team. 😵‍💫
