WTF is That Smirk?

There's something that I've been struggling to decipher for a long time with these hard right, white male, mostly younger (except Roger Stone) zealots that I've been watching for years.  What is up with that smirk they display while spewing their vitriol?

Is it "I know the secret handshake?", or what?  Just watching Matt Gaetz, for a minute, I was reminded of this again.  It's something I first noticed in the early 70's on the Young Republicans on campus.  The Omega House, Neidermeyer and Marmalard, had it.  The "Contract on America" poofs had it.  Joffrey Baratheon had it.  And yes, it could be seen in Charlottesville.  Anyone else notice this?

I always just assumed it was the condescending confidence that comes with believing one is innately superior in both form and function to those who have a different perspective.

Why do you say that?   

Some call them the 'alternative right.' They are from the nationalist populist wing of conservatism. Alternative because the globalist pluralist wing had been the mainstream of conservatism since, well,  the Great Depression? WWW II?  I see the Alt-right as the contemporary heirs of the Know Nothing American Party, the Second KKK, the America First Committee, the John Birch Society,  the Reform Party, and  the Tea Party.

George Will type conservatives still exist, but the mainstream Republican Party is now more or less the same as the JBS. Guys like Will have no place to go. 

I think the shit eating grin or smug smirk reflects a phony sense of superiority that comes from (sometimes covertly) aligning with xenophobic and white supremacist ideologies.

Last night my entire table eagerly overheard an animated argument unfolding at an adjacent outdoor patio table after golf league.

The retired State’s Attorney said Trump was the worst thing to happen to America since the Civil War, amongst other lesser but still serious “repealing the n-word’s legislature just for the sake of repealing the n-word’s legislature” charges regarding  the destruction of ACA. He also lauded Mitt Romney for standing up and calling Trump a cancer when no one else had the balls to do so.

He finished his rant by slamming his fist on the table and sending someone’s drink flying.

The doctor directly across the table leaned back in his charge and calmly said, “You’ve always been a hell of an attorney, ___, you can’t even answer my question.”

Wish I would have heard the question but entertaining nonetheless.

He said the actual n word paired with the word “legislation” (legislature was a typo on my part) implying that the sole reason ACA was a target for dismantling was because it was the crowning work of the n-word president that preceded Trump.

Maybe I’m not communicating this well.

He wasn’t saying it in a derogatory sense...he was essentially speaking his version of Trump’s psyche aloud, using the n word to emphasize Trump’s racism.

If a black person were sitting there at the same table I don’t think they’d have been upset and would in fact have agreed with him.
