Let's not forget about our sales tax. Top 7 in the country (state and average local) according to the google.

This is interesting.

Meanwhile, in Iowa

https://arnoldmotewealthmanagement.com/iowans-new-tax-law-brackets/

Good for the wealthy, not so good for the poor.  It’s also not truly a flat tax because lots of tax credits and exemptions remain in the Iowa tax code.

The flat tax plan relies in part on sizable savings the state has accumulated as federal dollars flowed in to help states compensate for economic loss due the COVID-19 pandemic.  Those dollars are temporary, and they were intended to be spent helping families in communities.
https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2021/10/17/iowa-governor-wrongly-claims-credit-for-large-budget-surplus/

It is also based on optimistic projections that Iowa’s annual tax revenue growth won’t drop from levels seen in the last decade.

I hope Iowa doesn’t end up like Kansas.  Stayed tuned.

As questioned in the comments, do these rates include IL home rule taxing bodies ie., schools, park district, and villages/cities and townships? Unclear.

This sort of thing is some really great intellectual dishonesty by the right.

Let's say you're Nevada. No state income tax, a lot of other taxes are generally low. Because they have a super high transient occupancy tax, that is paid by tourists on their lodging bill. In Lake Tahoe, the transient occupancy tax is 14%

The shell game played there, is that tourists don't care what part of the bill is tax and what part is rent. They look at the all in cost. So if  a room is $85 with a $15 tax, or $100 with zero tax, to the tourist, it's the same.

So just like a tariff, the tax isn't paid by the tourist, it's paid by the *landlord*. But it's not just a tax paid by the landlord itself, but trickles down in the form of reduced wages to the staff.

The staff doesn't care if they got paid $8.50 an hour with no tax, or $10 with $1.50 tax - in the end it's $8.50 into their bank account. It just feels better if the actual tax was collected from the tourist and resulted in reduced wages, instead of them paying tax on increased wages.

And to further my previous point - there are more, better, and higher paying jobs in Chicago, than say Orlando. That's a function of the State investing in itself via tax revenues. You pay more taxes, but your wages are higher too. The median income in Illinois is 35,000, the median income in Florida is $29,000. Unless Illinois is taking an extra 18% in taxes from you, you come out ahead.

At a glance, that map kind of looks like the opposite of this:
 https://smartasset.com/data-studies/states-most-dependent-on-the-federal-government-2022
States with lower tax burdens rely  more on federal assistance? Indiana 28th in tax burden; 27th most dependent on federal government

Looks like the Illinois state sales tax rate is pretty much in line with nearby states.
https://sovos.com/content-library/sut/state-by-state-guide-to-sales-tax/?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=BB-StatebyState&utm_term=sut&utm_content=map&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhsmaBhCvARIsAIbEbH4DAWEX3VbUDortbzVdylpVIdVevyDhbDbappRrm1a7rqSleQkSlSkaAn_GEALw_wcB

Of course, the overall sales tax rate is higher in some areas of the state because certain local jurisdictions (i.e., home rule units) are allowed to impose their own taxes that can be combined with the state sales tax.

But the cost of living is probably lower.

You're a fishwrap subscriber ? He's treated well.

Today's fishwrap had a story about a new grant bringing the total aid for the peaceful protest damage to $100 million.
Yee ha !!
Total uninsured losses ? Tack on another $100 million. We're 2 1/2 years later.

We led the country for a while in long term care deaths from the Covid, if you remember. His decision to send the Covid positive  hospital patients to long term care units was never covered. But then, all of the governors got away with it.

Minneapolis and Saint Paul are not what they were a few short years ago.

But the cost of living is probably lower.

That's generally true, but it's still better in the modern world to have a high wage in a high cost state than a low wage in a low wage state.
First off, the cost of say, a new Honda CRV, or a Dell Laptop, or a YouTube subscription are the same no matter where you live. True for many items, and that list is increasing with the ubiquity of Amazon.

More importantly, let's say a typical Chicagoan and a typical Floridian both sock away 10% of their income towards retirement. The Chicagoan will save up 50% more than the Floridian. Which is not that big a deal because the cost of living is higher in Chicago....

Until the Chicagoan retires to Florida, increasing the value of their nest egg. The best part being that if a hurricane destroys your retirement pad, Joe Biden will take a bunch of Federal taxes most of which are collected in higher cost states where residents are in higher brackets, and sends it to bail you out.

This said, the globalization of a lot of prices - making things like Dell laptops cheaper, has meant the cost of such items are going down for people in high cost states, but that money has just flown into increasing the cost of housing.
