I am not sure what planet some here have been living on. Maybe Mars?  In the United States, the term Democratic Socialism is used interchangeably with Social Democracy. It refers to a mixed economy -- free market capitalism with some central planning / public funding / social insurance.

Democratic Socialism can also mean socialism achieved via democratic elections rather than violent revolution. So the context matters.

It is never used to make socialism sound  better. Rather, Social Democracy staves off socialism by addressing the excesses, inequities, and other shortcomings of free markets.

Not repeating that position during the primary race was a good idea.

Social Democracy did  stave off communist socialism by addressing the excesses, inequities, and other shortcomings of free markets.

The imprecise use of Democratic Socialism does create confusion. Bernie points to Denmark as an example. Republican assholes point to Venezuela..

It means one or the other. It is not used to make socialism sound better.

Using socialism as a pejorative is a way of making predatory capitalism sound better.
