She did not lose I thought. I thought she tied him/her and they would not let Gaines on the medal stand, preferring him/her to be up there when they tied for third.
If that is the case, I can understand why she is so pissed off. That was stupid on the NCAA's part and completely backfired.
They were tied fifth. Almost a second behind 4th. In a 200 free that's an eternity. I mean, it's a pretty solid accomplishment just to make the Division I NCAA cut, let alone qualify for the finals, so to say "she was a shitty swimmer" is being a major asshole. I swam in High School and Riley Gaines would have beat me by an entire pool length at my best. Even if I had modern swim techniques and a race suit, she'd still smoke me.
But at that level, there is a very huge leap between the top couple swimmers and someone who finishes 5th. Like - "Lottery Pick for the NBA" and "played a little semi-pro ball in Estonia". The NCAA's are this week and for most races, the winner is already known barring injury or DQ. Gretchen Walsh won 4 medals at the Olympics, set 9 WR's at short course worlds. She's not gonna get challenged by someone who didn't make the finals of US Trials.
This said, I think we still need to have separate categories for transgender athletes. It's an a priori good to have humans compete in sports, so I don't think we just drop someone off the map. And the category would be so small that it might not be an NCAA division - if you want to swim competitively you can swim Masters. Masters races are already raced mixed gender by seed times, with winners sorted by overall time, so it doesn't cost the meet organizer anything.
