I vaguely remember the pits west of Champaign. Dudes were not very modest way back in the day. Girls generally wore suits  that I recall.

Edison Jr. High (now Middle School) made the boys swim naked for PE through 1966. Suits were optional for a few years after that, then required at some point. Not that PE classes were segregated by sex. It was called sex back then, not gender. Boys also took group showers.

Heard boys also swam naked in boys only classes at the local Champaign YMCA though about 1962. I took lessons there when I was very young, but do not remember.   

The reasoning was suits spread diseases and the fibers clogged up the filtration.  They had to make an exception for female modesty, but real men didn't care.  At some point, chlorination and nylon suits would have defeated the supposed purpose.
