Utah is a good program. Better than most. They don’t play near Chicago in the Big Ten.

Well if it is, then Utah's is.  They were around the same time.  Again, that was the point.

My guess is RayJ would laugh if you asked him if he might commit to Utah because they went to the title game with Andre Miller.  He'd probably ask who the fuck Andre Miller is.

I think when you grew up in a state that produced a Dee Brown, and probably had parents or people you are close with root for that team; you’re likely to feel a deeper connection. It doesn’t mean that connection definitely exists. Just the likelihood of a connection to Illinois basketball as opposed to Utah for a kid like Rayj.

Now if a kid grew up in Salt Lake City, he’d be more likely to identify himself in at least some ways to Utah Basketball.

RayJ Dennis was like, 4 when Dee Brown played at Illinois.  And he's 4 years older than the HS kids we're recruiting.

You have to see, at least, that this "he HAD to have someone who loved that team around him" is you projecting onto him right?  He very well might've; he very well may have parents that don't care about Illinois at all.  We just have no clue.

Spark claims Illinois is nationally relevant with Underwood yet can’t beat out Utah for a mid major PG that went to HS in state.

Again, looking from afar the Illini program is complete chaotic JUCO garbage.  Random rotating roster of guys thrown together with no thought.

Remember how bad Illinois was at shooting last year.  Who exactly is going to shoot better this year than last?

This is a team that is going to be horrific offensively, horrific defensively, slow, unathletic and just plain bad.

This is Sergio McClain at PG level bad with no hope in sight for the future.  Honestly they should make Rodgers the PG just for shits and giggles

Probably.

But it'd be really dumb to take a random basketball recruit from 2 hours away from SLC and just assume he grew up a big Utah basketball fan.

Sure, but Rayj was probably in junior high when Utah joined the Pac-12. Utah is a very respectable program, but they don’t have the scope of Illinois. Definitely not historically.

Again, I didn’t say that either. But it’s likely Rayj at least passively rooted for Illinois, or had friends and family that definitely do. Having a chance to be a hero at the local school (and one with decent history) has to be appealing to a kid (and his family). Whether they are Illinois diehards or not.
