I’m sure that will go over like a lead balloon.
Ukraine’s citizens having more privately owned firearms and training wouldn’t so much as faze the might of the Russian military. Would just piss off the Russians and lead to higher numbers of civilian casualties.
If we assume there’s a value to having hundreds of millions of legally owned private firearms in our country, it isn’t to protect us from foreign invasion. If a major power overpowers our military, we are straight fucked. No Red Dawn scenarios, sorry.
The value (for those who own the guns and those who are friends with them) would be in the face of some cataclysmic disaster, or a famine, or some other breakdown of the thin veil of society wherein individuals are protecting their homes, families and supplies from those who would endeavor to take it from them.
I imagine that within 2-3 weeks (max) of grocery store shelves being empty, no electricity, etc. that people would start doing WINT to take care of themselves and their families. Including forcefully taking from their neighbors and venturing en masse into the countryside in search of anything they could get their hands on to survive regardless of cost.
Having a little arsenal and knowing how to use it would be useful in such a scenario, because chances are small the military or police are going to be able to do fuck-all about it until it’s way too late. Even if your smart phone was miraculously still functional.
It appears Ukraine is pretty much fucked unless NATO commits to full force and starts actual WWIII. I thought maybe Putin was content with just annexing the states that wanted to be annexed. I mean, in that case, fuck it. Let them have what they want and move on. The borders of European states have been constantly shifting since recorded history. Some of Ukraine just seems like it belongs to Russia culturally and geographically.
Putin has to know he’s asking for monumental bloodshed and potential global apocalypse if he goes any farther than Ukraine. So he won’t. Even if he’s absolutely mental, and he very well may be, it’s just not a chance Russia can take. There will be nothing left. For them or anyone else.
So since the economic threats haven’t done the trick it basically leaves two choices for the West. Cede Ukraine to Russia, which has traditional ties to Russia and part of which wants to BE RUSSIA, then clamp down economically and strengthen NATO in neighboring areas OR light the fuse to the end of the world.
I definitely think there’s a contingent of global elites who seek depopulation and a complete reset of the global economy. I’ve been saying since about 2012 on IlliniHQs that we can’t just keep making shit we don’t need and paying for it with money we don’t have and depositing the detritus into landfills that can’t continue forever. But no one is going to campaign on that platform, so it’s just going to be done at a much higher level in ways we don’t even want to imagine.
Covid didn’t do the trick, so war it is? Seemed plenty of people really wanted Covid to be the doomsday virus, particularly for those who they opposed politically, but it failed. Immediately the focus shifts to this shit show. Every single conflict we’ve been involved in since I was born was complete bullshit. Not sure the several proceeding it weren’t complete bullshit as well. The public gets fed a bunch of lies to get us behind conflict, then we find out later it was just more Western imperialism.
I’m 40 years old and I’m this jaded. How can the people who lived through Viet Nam (or the select few like Nichi who remember the golden days of WWII and Korea) not be just a little skeptical of what we are being fed?
