Watched it with the in-laws this afternoon, good stuff. Been on a bit of a hiatus from golf with the kids being in activities and more work responsibility but have recommitted to playing more this year. Got myself a new set of sticks this March and have only played twice and been to range 3-4 times. Hoping to really hit it hard starting this week.

Two years ago or so I got rid of my old Miura’s for a set of gently used Titleist T100S off GolfWRX but the long irons were a little demanding for me. So I went and got fitted this winter and got a combo set of T200 long irons and T150 mid and short 7-G) irons with a Vokey 54 SW. Got rid of my Axis1 Rose putter and got a Scotty Newport. Kept my old hybrid and 3W because they’re just automatic for me. Did get rid of my 10+ year old driver and got a used Titleist TSR3 off WRX with the Fujikura Ventura shaft that’s been dominating the tour the past few years. Had one range session with it and made some adjustments then absolutely murdered it when I played last Saturday on a course I’m familiar with my normal driver distances. Had it on a string all day which was fun as driving tends to be the least consistent part of my game. Pic was before the putter came in.

Nice, I didn’t know Axel Rose made a putter! JK. Nice looking bag you have there. I had a Scotty Cameron Newport years ago. I put it away wet and it rusted out. Then I went all in on the rusting out and I think I even soaked it in coca-cola IIRC. My clubs are all old, but were top of the line stuff in 2004 when I last played regularly at all. You can just about buy the latest driver today for the same price in 2004. I remember paying $500-600 for my Titleist 983K. I have Mizuno irons (the best feel IMO), and my White Hot #8 is the best putter I’ve ever had. Have a classic Wilson 8802 as well. Cleveland wedges. I think I still have a Vokey as well. I’d like to get back into playing, but right now I mostly watch on TV and work with my son at the range. He hits 90 balls to every 10 I hit.

Nice call on getting fitted. Makes a difference. You’ve got a nice looking set.

I have a nice Titleist 3W as well, but I’ve always hated it. I hook the hell out of it. When I caught it right, it was great, but I couldn’t trust it at all. Made me wonder if I unknowingly bought clubs with hook biases.

Here’s a tip. I know a fair bit about the golf swing (I was obsessed with the game, once wanted to become a PGA teaching pro, and used to take lessons from a guy who is a lifetime Golf Magazine top 100 teacher in America. He was hand chosen by the legendary Harvey Penick (Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite Coach, written famous instruction booklets) to run his academy.

Anywhoo, this drill IMO is the single best drill you can do to help your golf swing. I wish I’d gotten locked into this drill when I was a younger man, I think I’d have been a more consistent player. I had a long swing so I had to have my timing down or I’d struggle. I could go on insane hot streaks and then follow it up with two or three miserable holes. I once went -5 for a 6 hole stretch(and missed an eagle putt by two inches) and the next three holes I think I was 6 or 7 over par. Do this drill, it’s amazing. I’m teaching it to my kid now. 5-10 minutes a day will do wonders IMO.

Even though I’m getting old I can still move the ball. After barely swinging in 20 years I got a bay that tracked ball speed and whatnot last year and was still hitting 165 ball speed with range balls. 167ish is tour average. Outside of a couple of par 3 courses with my kid, I haven’t played in years. Curious to see what I can still (and can’t) do.

Good stuff tempo, will check out the drill. My kids love the range too. Usually if I have a big left miss with a wood it’s due to a shaft that’s too soft for me. I’m about the same ball speed as you last I checked and I play pretty stout shafts. Although I’m more of a hitter than a swinger type.

I played with fairly stiff shafts S300 in my irons back in the day (which means that’s what’s still in my clubs). I haven’t clocked my clubhead speed in a long time, but I was about 115 with the driver 20-22 years ago. I’m probably not as fast today but still fast enough.

Assuming the same club length of 45” or so, I’d imagine shots out of the screws wouldn’t be a huge difference, but the forgiveness difference for misses would be pretty massive I’d think. Drivers made huge leaps in the mid to late 2000s with 460cc heads, max MOI numbers, carbon crowns, variable face thickness,better graphite shafts, adjustability, etc. Now in 2024 it is down to very very incremental levels of improvement at this point. Basically just tweaking looks and visible technology to keep people upgrading.

There are some guys on YouTube that hit old vs new clubs and it’s pretty interesting. My 10 year old driver was a 388cc Japanese forged titanium driver. Beautiful club with amazing sound and feel, but the Titleist feels like cheating. I can still tell exactly where I’m hitting it on the face but it just goes like hell no matter where I hit it. So I can tell when I miss center, but my golf buddies can’t.😬

I am also a Mizuno fan, as you can tell, I have a Mizuno bag. Just no Mizuno clubs in it right now. I was really tempted by their new MP releases and their new raw wedges are so sexy, but I just hit the Titleist better. They are forged and feel good, but not Mizuno good. They have a ton of tungsten in them down low and I can get away with my thin miss better as a result. Kind of a trade off.
