I actually thought this team had national title contender potential. SMH

That's what we were told. Oversold/underdelivered yet again.

I almost said ball denial and disrupting the passing lanes, but we don't do that.

They should have been playing zone all year.  The only style that works with the type of talent Illinois has (length but not very physical, and non-shooting slop ball on offense) is to play how Syracuse played when they were good.  Zone defense and a slow pace. Ugly the game up. Win with offensive rebounds.

But if you play man to man with guys like Mayer/Hawkins/Dainja you’re gonna get worked.  None of them can stop the ball

Most of Penn State’s entire offensive action was iso Pickett, have him back his man down into the lane, then he either shoots over the guy guarding him or passes out after the double team for a 3.  If you play zone you take all that away. He can’t iso his defender when there’s 3 guys clogging the lane and long wings taking away passes.

I think most coaches could deal with giving guys like Funk 25 footers vs a zone than having Pickett get 41 points playing ISO ball.

IL simply can’t guard good offensive teams when you have Mayer, Hawkins, Dainja trying to guard the perimeter off the dribble. They can’t guard anyone good in those situations. It was even worse when Skyy was playing.  They are lucky they’ve played the easiest Big 10 schedule or their record would more accurately reflect how they really are

After another night of not draining 3s we're at 31.27%, so we're currently around 312th out of 352 in 3 point shooting. We finally found a way to squeeze onto page 7 of 8 in the NCAA site. Unfortunately, there are only 2 teams listed on page 8.
After bricking 20 out of 27 last night, it looks like we moved up to 35th out of 352 in attempts per game.
We can't make em, but we make up for it by missing a lot of em.

You want to run a zone against a team that plays 4 guards and shot nearly 60% from the field?! Sounds about as dumb as the thought that Ty Rodgers isn't a high major talent.

We're currently rolling out a guard, 3 forwards, and a slow center. We're vulnerable to any coach with personnel who knows how to exploit that and our guys can't capitalize on the other end because our forwards are content to launch 3s.

We are a good rebounding team but not a great one despite having guys who are 6'8"+ at the 3 and 4. We block shots as good as any team in Illinois history but give back 2-4 a game goaltending.

You and others keep buying into the idea that recruiting stars = titles.

The fan base keeps buying into the same bag of crap and then thinking it's gold.

That's how we end up with people believing that the likes of Brandon Paul, Jereme Richmond, Joe Bertrand, and Crandall Head will form a great team.

Also, I think there was a Melendez sighting near the end of last night's game. Before that, it was time for him to try out for team manager.
I am a former 5-star general. Or maybe it was 4-star.
Nichi claims a guard with a 1.3 assist-to-TO ratio is a good passer.

This fucking team

At halftime, I said exactly that.

I still think the team gets into the tournament and then loses to Drake by double digits in the first round.

"I don't know how we're favored. Virtually every game should be a pick 'em game until further notice."
2 1/2 months ago.
"Is 3 point shooting going to be a concern ?"

It's the job of a coaching staff to get the most out of the players. The staff looks to be hard headed, as do the players.
That being said, we have no idea what team will show up Sat in Bloomington.

Hardheaded is being kind.  I think it's a lack of intelligence.  Looking at the box-score without the 3pt stats indicates that it should have been a 1 score game regardless of outcome.  We win the boards, shoot 80% FTs, and have only 8 turnovers and lose by double digits.   How messed up is that.

Play Rodgers at 30 minutes/game.  I don't care who's minutes he takes.

Yeah.  Sounds like the only defense a collection of guys like that should play is zone.

Teams play zone when they can’t guard their own man off the dribble, or are trying to prevent paint points and easy layups.   You wouldn’t want on the ball defenders like Trent Frazier sitting back in a zone.  But you would want guys like Mayer, Hawkins, Dainja sitting in a zone rather than getting way out of position trying to guard a dribbler.

Plus zone defense usually leads to less fouls.

Pickett got 41 points and also managed to get lot of open 3s for his teammates.  The defense they tried last night was a failure.
