College football rankings and CFP were horrific this year, unless you consider the NCAA FB advertiser’s perspective. When you look at it that way, they fucking nailed it. Which, of course, is the entire point of college football.
Coastal Carolina lost their game to Liberty so it eliminates that controversy. Guess we shall see how Cincy does. If they won convincingly against UGA then we have a legit controversy. If they don’t, then it’s hard to argue we need an 8 team playoff. I just don’t see anyone outside that top 4 that can win 3 consecutive games against top 8 teams. We’d probably just get a first round of mostly blowouts with an occasional close game or upset.
As an Ohio State alum, I'm all for keeping status quo. However, the rich getting richer isn't necessarily good for the long-term health of college football. Anyone else tired of seeing Alabama & Clemson (again) in the CFP? Out of the 36 CFP games played thus far, Alabama (9) and Clemson (9) have combined to play in 18. Ohio State (4) and Oklahoma (4) are next. So those 4 teams (out of @130 FBS programs) have combined to play 26 of the 36 CFP games (72%). Perhaps not quite as bad as 1% of the US population controlling 30% of the household wealth in the country (per Forbes).
As a college football fan, I say expand the CFP to 8 teams. When Group of 5 programs actually have a guaranteed slot in the CFP, recruiting at contending Group of 5 programs will improve. March Madness is much more entertaining with mid-major programs in the NCAA D1 basketball tournament. Who doesn't love the 5-12 matchup? I think the same thing could happen in FBS football. Really good up-and-coming coaches might be more willing to stay at those Group of 5 programs for a longer time if they have an avenue to reach the CFP.
My 2020 selections, as follows:
First, pick the 4 best conference champions: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma
Note: Only 4 are selected to protect against a scenario where a P5 conference champ is average and the conference not very good bad top-to-bottom -- like the Pac 12 this season.
Next, pick the "best" Group of 5 team (1): Cincinnati
Third, pick the "best" remaining Power 5 team (1): Notre Dame
Note: ND, BYU, Army & Navy are considered P5
Finally, pick the 2 best remaining "at large" teams from all eligible FBS teams (2): Texas A&M and either Indiana, San Jose State, Coastal Carolina, BYU, or Louisiana.
Note: Georgia is off the list because it didn't win its division and has 2 losses. 3 loss team? NFY, GTFOOH. If I pick TAMU, I should probably pick Indiana, as both teams lost only 1 game on the road to the eventual conference champ. However, IU lost starting QB Pence for the season and that's one of the things the Committee would take into consideration.
I'm not being paid enough to come up with the playoff bracket for the 8 teams...
