I think that goes without saying but that doesn’t relegate UI to taking a flyer on a guy who has never even faced the biggest challenge he’d face here in building a quality program.

But the job is a better one than it’s been the previous several searches at a minimum just due to facilities, larger hiring budget, a young hungry AD with a long leash, and a much more realistic path to P5 relevance in the relatively weak B1G West.

It’s probably a pipe dream but with the shit show unfolding in Texas maybe JW can finagle a deal that gets Herman. Texas doesn’t want him anymore and Herman has been essentially cuckolded by UT, so it makes some sense if they could figure out the buyout situation. I know Herman isn’t without his own set of question marks but I don’t think we could do any better really.

If it is Lance, he wasn’t the first choice. And possibly not even second third or...who knows. I 100% believe the talk that he tried for Fickell badly. Pretty sure a handful of others said no thanks to interviews too

Regardless of whether or not the new head coach is Whitman's first or 7th choice, hopefully it is someone who understands how to communicate, build a roster and develop players in the program. When players are playing out of position because of gaps in the roster, there are going to be problems. 

Luke Fickell and his family are devout Catholics. Having a strong Catholic community where he coaches is important to them.

If I was AD, I'd give Fickell an opportunity.

Fickell was an assistant at Ohio State under Jim Tressel and later Urban Meyer. Mark Dantonio was DC under Tressel when Fickell started in 2002 as ST coach at OSU. So Fickell has had an opportunity to learn from several pretty successful coaches. FWIW, current MSU head coach Mel Tucker was DB coach for Tressel that same year.
