A bunch of old people performing a CYA for a virus that hasn’t really affected young healthy athletes seems like a very effective way to jump start a massive unionization campaign.

Huh? The Pac-10 players started the rumblings early on and Big 10 players had jumped on it too.

https://www.deseret.com/indepth/2020/8/8/21357306/college-football-players-letter-pac-12-big-10-ncaa-george-floyd-protests-civil-rights-paid-amateur

Yeah, I still call it the Pac-10.

I think being told they can’t play is the perfect opportunity for these student athletes to seize some control.

The NCAA’s indentured servant business model is successful because it streamlines the whole process of training/coaching/development/spotlight for these kids. It literally has no competition other than players leaving for the NFL.

These guys want to play and now the opportunity isn’t there. But it also opens the door for them to create their own opportunity to play high level amateur football outside the NCAA.

Yeah, I still call it the Pac-10.

I thought years ago that the power schools may break away from the NCAA on their own for the revenue sports.
4 conferences with 16 teams each.
In football, each conference has a championship round of 1-2 games and then a BCS bowl format of some type.
In hoops, all 64 teams are in similar to current March Madness.
See ya, NCAA. We'll police ourselves.

Mother of Indiana Freshman Brady Feeney Says Her Son Seriously 'Struggling with Virus'

"Debbie Rucker, the mother of incoming Indiana freshman offensive lineman Brady Feeney, went to Facebook on Monday asking for prayers for her son, who is struggling mightily with the COVID-19 virus.”

“Indiana athletic department officials have been releasing positive test results every week or so, but they have not ever mentioned which players or coaches or staff members have tested positive. In their most recent announcement last Friday, the school reported that there had been 33 positive tests out of 480.”

https://www.si.com/college/indiana/football/indiana-freshman-brady-feeney-seriously-ill-covid-19

Feeney is a 6-foot-4, 325-pound lineman from St. Louis, Mo.  Here’s an excerpt from his mother's FB post:

"Here is our story...

"My son was negative when he got tested at the beginning of volunteer workouts. Within three weeks he and multiple others tested positive. His university has done everything right by shutting down workouts and retesting the whole team."

"Unfortunately this virus hit my son very hard compared to most of his teammates. Here was a kid in perfect health, great physical condition and due to the virus ended up going to the ER because of breathing issues. After 14 days of hell battling the horrible virus, his school did additional testing on all those that were positive. My son even received extra tests because he was one of the worst cases."

"Now we are dealing with possible heart issues! He is still experiencing additional symptoms and his blood work is indicating additional problems. Bottom line, even if your son’s schools do everything right to protect them, they CAN’T PROTECT THEM!!”

"I pray my son recovers from this horrible virus and can lead a healthy normal life!! Football does not really matter when your child’s health is in jeopardy!! Think about it!!! My heart is hurting and I pray for all of these kids and for the people making the decisions about the season!!!”

“Please protect all of those around you and please wear a mask!!!”

“Thank you for listening!!”

She must be lying as only the fat, old, and diabetics are impacted by the virus.

He’s young and fat and possibly prediabetic but it’s hilarious that someone somewhat finds the exception that proves the rule and we’ve got you and Alum74 over here holding it up like Simba

It may be premature to call him an exception at this point, but the remainder of the post made me guffaw.

Well, that is certainly a creative way to look at it, but I'm not sure how realistic it is. No money men have appeared clamoring to start a new minor league for football. Plus, the minor league baseball system was not in great shape before the COVID and MLB used COVID to drive a dagger in it.

Glad to read he’s healthy and back with the team

Brady's cardiologist has not cleared him to return to workouts.

Finding one 325 lb 18 year old that got sick doesn’t do much to refute me saying “hasn’t really done much to young healthy athletes”

I didn’t say “no athlete has ever or will ever get sick from this” so essentially the fact that teams have been practicing and holding workouts and we have exactly one case to point to is a pretty good indication that this virus isn’t a big threat to the athletes.

Looks like you’ve pivoted from “hasn’t really affected young healthy athletes” to “hasn’t really done much to young healthy athletes.”   I’ll take that as progress that for now you at least recognize COVID-19 may have health consequences for young athletes.

Like so much about the disease, the long-term impacts for athletes who contract it (young and old) are not fully understood, including lingering health problems such as heart, lung and cognitive issues.

Here’s a few more examples of young athletes that are struggling with the complications:

Red Sox ace, 27, won’t pitch this season because of heart ailment linked to covid-19

“Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez described his experience with covid-19 as feeling “like I was 100 years old.” Now, the 27-year-old left-hander will miss the 2020 season while recovering from a heart issue related to the illness.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/08/02/red-sox-ace-27-wont-pitch-this-season-because-heart-ailment-linked-covid-19/

COVID-19 took a toll on Clemson’s Xavier Thomas. Now he’ll miss most of 2020

“Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced Thursday night that defensive end Xavier Thomas will redshirt this year after a battle with COVID-19 and strep throat. Thomas will be eligible to play in four games and still redshirt. And Swinney is hopeful the junior will be able to contribute some this year.”
https://www.thestate.com/article244771767.html

Houston DL Sedrick Williams Says He Has Heart Complications from COVID-19

“University of Houston defensive lineman Sedrick Williams will not play in the 2020 season because of heart complications related to COVID-19. 'I’ve had my mind made up for a min now , but hearing this story made it even easier ... As a result of the virus I’ve had complications with my heart and I really don’t know the outcome or what’s in store for me in the future , I just know that my life is more precious to me than football could ever be ... I’VE DECIDED TO OPT OUT OF THE 2020 FOOTBALL SEASON due to these complications ... I won’t take this year for granted , IM COMING BACK BIGGER , FASTER , & STRONGER than EVER ...’”
https://www.newsbreak.com/news/1615047062041/houston-dl-sedrick-williams-says-he-has-heart-complications-from-covid-19

These athletes had the coronavirus.  Will they ever be the same?

“…interviews with athletes who have contracted the virus — from professionals to college athletes to weekend hobbyists — revealed their surprise at the potency of its symptoms, struggles to reestablish workout regimens, lingering battles with lung issues and muscle weakness, and unsettling bouts of anxiety about whether they would be able to match their physical peaks.”

I really think this situation clearly illustrates that they're not student-athletes. That having a campus with a physical attendance of 20k+ is a dumb idea has little to do with whether we can run a big-money athletic endeavor, which is basically what Ohio State football is. The only challenge is that it's 6x the people per team as an NBA franchise. I get why the B1G feels like it had to cancel and am 100% against schools reopening, but I think football teams like OSU or Nebraska have a fair beef.

Not that I fault either person, but the Big10 commissioner, Kevin Warren, can hop a plane to watch his son play for Mississippi State if he needs a live game football fix.

Yep he could.  Best not to publicize it.  I'm thinking it wouldn't be a good look.

30-35% seems like a game changer and hardly isolated instance.

Except the PSU "doctor" is walking it back. I have no clue what he thinks he was trying to say at this point.

Can you imagine the absolute fucking shitstorm that guy’s life has been since he published that? Football money will ruin his career...if he’s lucky.

On the other side of the coin we know lots of different and very common diseases have various inherent symptoms.

The common cold, the flu, pneumonia, infections, et al nearly always present problems like reduced lung and heart function, prolonged recovery time after physical activity, you name it.

It isn’ whether or not there’s a 1 in 3 chance of myocarditis so much as how dangerous is it and how should it be managed.
