Pretty much the case. The trade opens up three spots on the club’s 40-man roster.  Some of these guys like Soroka were going to be nontendered.
 
Lopez is a nice utility infielder; good with the glove and runs the bases well.  Shuster could be a backend piece for the starting rotation.  Would love to see Soroka get back on track, but he’s trying to come back from an extensive injury history.

Soroka did finish 2nd in ROY voting and was an all star in 2019 before his Achilles went to shit. He’s only 25 so still young enough to be saved which probably won’t happen with the Sox.

Nicky Lopez. You know why he’s here. The Kansas City Royals connection of course. He’s Nick Madrigal 2.0 but he hails from the mean streets of Naperville. A fact I wouldn’t be aware of had Turncoat Benetti not mentioned it 40 times in every Sox/Royals game in the last few years.

Sources tell me the Sox have wanted Lopez for years and couldn't get him.  Why they wanted him is a mystery to me.
