Wasn't there just a recall election out there because of shit just like this?
The recent recall was of a couple of members of the School Board. Do you know who's on your school board? Most people don't, those elections are won often times by a combination of a clever choice of "Occupation" listed on the ballot and luck of the draw in placement on the ballot (I think the best slot is #2, if I recall). If someone works really hard, they can cobble together a small set of supporters to get 5-10% extra and that might be enough.
Then some shit goes down and everyone cares. The school board had a couple of real beauties on it. The COVID protocol was pretty mangled, there's no way you can please everyone with a COVID plan, but they pretty much found a way to piss off the biggest COVID deniers AND the people who wanted the most restrictions.
They bought into the dumbass changes some places are making with respect to math, kids now can't take Algebra II until pretty deep in their career, making a very hard path to get to calculus. I didn't follow it exactly but I think there was a push to not have math split into courses until high school, meaning teachers would have to teach random groups of kids with vastly different skill levels.
There was one high school, Lincoln, which you had to apply to and it was very selective based on academics and test scores. I understand they removed that protocol and put Lincoln into the regular lottery, because you know, equity, everyone should have a chance to attend the "good school", of course "good school" is measured by test scores, and Lincoln had the highest test scores because it was self selected to include the kids with the best test scores. Make it a regular lottery school, everyone will have the opportunity to go to Lincoln but the scores will go down, and eventually Lincoln's curriculum would have to change because they don't have the critical mass for the accelerated classes.
But - they did push to rename the schools, I think Lincoln gets to stay but George Washington owned slaves/etc...
Overall they really sucked no matter what your metric was, and they got recalled, by a coalition of lefties, righties, and moderates. In 2 years they'll end up electing a new incompetent board when everyone forgets.
There is another recall upcoming, the DA is being recalled, basically because he's a very strange bird, again with a rainbow coalition against him.
