I don't go there much. Since it transitioned to restaurant puff pieces, it's been intolerably boring IMAO.

But I had a cordial contretemps with Mike Carpenter about Mary's looting coverage. He thought the N-G provided too much personal information about people who've been merely charged, not convicted of crimes. I know some people have the same opinion about mug shot publication.

I've never met Mike but I enjoyed his contributions to both of the Tay & Carp podcasts I heard.

I have met Mary, and I emailed to congratulate her on the excellent reporting (before it became a political issue).

I was in Paul Barrett’s office for 2 hours last Tuesday and I asked for his thoughts on the PC pressure media outlets and journalists were under for fear of their jobs.

He related the example of “some small outfit” going after Mary, although he couldn’t remember the name of said outlet.

As soon as he said that, I offered, “Smile Politely?”  And he nodded.

I tried to explain to him what SP is and does, although my experience with SP has been almost entirely through links you’ve provided to articles you’ve penned.

I never did read the SP articles or whatever they were doing to try to take Mary down as I wasn’t going to give them the clicks.

I just know that PB understandably was quite upset given Mary’s track record.

It took me a paragraph or two, but I recalled having read this zoning article before.

It is the Trump / Barr DOJ and their appointees to the courts.  Trump appointee Neomi Rao wrote the decision.

I believe the article that I linked was not much more than a couple of paragraphs indicating only that the Appeals Court had reached a decision.
I can't get past Bloomberg's paywall but there is a statement that the article was updated.
If Wine-Banks opinion was in there, I sure didn't see it. I assume her statement was made prior to the decision and referring to Barr, rather than after the decision and referring to the Appeals Court.

That's my problem with the concept of white privilege. Freedom from systemic racial discrimination is not only being called a privilege, it is supposedly an unearned privilege. In a sense, the social benefits of being part of modern human civilization are privileges, and we should not take them for granted. Even the poor in advanced welfare states enjoy these to an extent. There is also cultural chauvinism, but this is not limited to whites and western civilization. Humans tend be ethnocentric and culturally bigoted. Then there are the privileges of class and wealth.  None these are apparently not what white privilege refers to. 

Somehow, not being harrassed by the police or denied credit, based solely on skin color, is an unearned privilege? This distorted reasoning gives POC the false impression that the average white person can violate traffic laws with impunity or easily obtain underserved credit. That, in turn, causes resentment among average whites, who know that is simply not true.

The essay I linked seems mostly about western civilization.  Makes sense based on my life experience.  The current pecking order of wc in many ways reflects the number of BIPOC populations that were disadvantaged by the colonial rise to power.  Granted, it's not as bad as the old days, but we ain't there yet.  Just saying....

White privilege is just a piss poor name for a real phenomena. I'd say white chauvinism, except it is more an implicit and partly irrational belief in the superiority of western civilization and culture than white supremacism. White arrogance?
 
I think western civilization has been superior in several respects, starting with emphases on empiricism, rationalism, and pragmatism. Also, with our willingness to both import ideas and innovate.

Lately, we are descending into science denialism and bias confirmation. This might be worse on the right, but the left is guilty to some extent too.
