The trial of Abdirashid Ismail Said on state charges regarding $11 million in Medicaid fraud was scheduled to begin tomorrow.
The Mn AG has spoken out about his efforts to bring fraud cases to justice at the state level. A successful state prosecution may have enabled recouping some of the $11 million in fraud, none of which has been recovered.
The presiding judge offered the defendant a conditional bond of $50, 000 under the condition of surrendering his passport. An unconditional bond of $150,000 with no passport surrender, at the objection of the prosecution, was offered as an alternative to the man charged with $11 million in fraud.
A pre-trial hearing was scheduled for this past week. Abdirashid Ismail Said didn't show up. It's assuming, after Said opted for the $150000 bond and keeping his passport, that he skipped the country.
The AG says that he will continue to pursue prosecutions.
This follows a Nov 2025 case regarding state charges, not federal, against another individual with $7 million in Medicaid fraud. A jury in deep, deep blue Hennepin County returned a unanimous guilty verdict after short deliberations.
The judge vacated the unanimous verdict.
The AG says that he will pursue an appeal.
